Abstract

A housing 4 and an actuator for pulling a cable 1 mounted therein. The housing defines a exit for the cable. The actuator includes a worm 7, a motor 10 drivingly coupled to the worm 7, gearing 6 meshing with the worm 7, a cable pulley 2 pivotally mounted in the housing 4 and driven by the gearing. A cable 1 to be pulled has one end fixed to the cable pulley 2. A first stopper 11 establishes a starting position for the cable pulley 2, and a second stopper 11 establishes a reversing position for the cable pulley 2. An electric circuit 3 supplies power to the motor 10 to cause rotation in one sense between the first and second stoppers, and in the opposite sense between the second and first stoppers. The electric circuit 3 senses motor stall at the second stopper and responsive thereto reverses the supply power to the motor 10 to reverse its driving direction to the opposite sense. The electric circuit 3 further senses motor stall at the first stopper and responsive thereto cuts off the supply power to the motor 10. The actuator is intended for use in a vehicle seat.

nine main components, including a cable 1, a cable pulley 2, a spur gear 6, a second spur gear 8, a worm 7, a worm wheel gear 9, gear housing 4, shaft or pin 5, stopper 11 for each end of travel, a motor 10, an electrical circuitry or device 3 to reverse the motor rotation direction when the motor is stalled during cable pulling and to open circuit when the motor is stalled during returning. The components are arranged in a novel manner.
The function of these parts or components will now be described.
The cable I connects or is attached to a seat latch of a second row seat in a vehicle to fold and flip the second row seat from an upright position to a collapsed position upon release of the latch and pulling on the cable 1. When cable I is pulled the seat back flips and when the cable I is pulled again, the whole seat folds down to a collapsed position.
Cable pulley 2 supports the cable 1 along a guide on its periphery while motor 10 is operating (pulling the cable 1). Cable pulley 2 is mounted on a shaft to be freely rotatable around the shaft. The shaft is fixed to the housing.
Electrical circuitry or device 3 is mounted on the motor 10 and is itself connected to vehicle electrical wires running to the vehicle battery and generator. and serves to start motor 10 running when receiving a signal from the vehicle controller and to reverse the motor 10 running direction when the motor is stalled during pulling of the cable 1, and to open circuit when the motor 10 is stalled while returning to its starting position, Gear housing 4, which includes a cover, support gears, pins, and motor 10, and protects them from external force.
Component 5 name: Pin or shaft 5 supports second spur gear B and enables free rotation of the second spur gear 8 around this pin. Also, it determines center distance or axis of rotation of second spur gear 8. S...

re pulley 2.
Worm 7 is attached to the motor 19 output shaft and transfers and increases torque from motor 10 to the worm wheel gear 9.
Second Spur gear 8 reduces speed and increases torque from worm wheel gear 9 to spur gear 6.
Worm wheel gear 9 transfers and increases torque from worm 7 to second spur gear 8.
Motor 10 changes electrical energy to mechanical energy, and rotates rotate worm 7 through the motor output shaft.
Stopper 11 provided for both ends of travel determine the angular position for reversing and stopping motor 10 by causing stalling of the motor 10.
As noted above, the actuator of the invention is primarily intended for use in a vehicle to flip and fold a rear or second row seat. The vehicle electrical circuitry is connected in a known manner using one or more connectors as part of the electrical circuitry or device 3 of the actuator. In this manner, a supply voltage and current is obtained from the vehicle to operate the motor 10. The connector(s) of the actuator connect to the voltage and current supplies of the vehicle and thus, the electrical circuitry or device 11 supplies voltage and current draw to the motor 10 when a signal is received from the vehicle to pull the cable 1. The electrical circuitry or device 3 may have other functions, such as, to suppress electrical magnetic interference.
As noted the electrical circuitry or device 3 can have suppression of electrical magnetic *:*:* interference and at least one hall sensor. The motor shaft may be directly or indirectly connected to the worm shaft. * *
Vehicle electrical wires are connected to suitable connectors of the actuator and supply

The connectors of the actuator are part of the electrical circuitry and device 3 and the electrical circuitry and device 3 supplies voltage and current draw to the motor 10 when a signal is received from the vehicle controller instructing the actuator to pull the cable 1. The electrical circuitry and device 3 is mounted on the motor end and provides the necessary circuitry between its connectors and the motor 10. The electrical circuitry and device 3 may have other functions, such as, to suppress electrical magnetic interference.
The second spur gear 8 can be eliminated when one spur gear set provides enough speed reduction. Also, both of the spur gears can be eliminated when one worm gear set provides enough speed reduction. The cable pulley 2 and spur gear 6 is located under the worm wheel gear 9, but the cable pulley 2 and spur gear 6 can located at another place in the gear housing.
The interconnections of the main components and the sub-components are as follows.
Vehicle electrical wire(s) connects to the connector(s) of the actuator and supply voltage and current to the motor 10 from the vehicle battery or generator. The connector is part of the electrical circuitry and device 3 of the actuator and interconnects the vehicle voltage and current draw to the motor 10 when a signal is received from the vehicle controller to pull the cable 1. Electrical circuitry and device 3 also has the function of reversing direction of the motor 10 when the motor 10 stalls while pulling the cable 1.
After motor 10 is stalled once, while pulling the cable 1, electrical circuitry and device 3 stops supplying voltage to the motor 10, if motor 10 stalls while returning to its starting position. Motor 10 drives worm 7 and worm 7 drives worm wheel gear 9. Worm wheel gear 9 drives second spur gear 8 and second spur gear S drives spur gear 6 fixed to cable pulley 2. Spur gear 6 and cable pulley 2 pull the cable 1. If a signal from the vehicle is still on after the motor is returned to its the original position the electrical circuitry and device 3 has stopped supplying voltage to the motor 10, electrical circuitry ***. and device 3 starts supplying voltage to the motor again. *S*
if it is intended not to use the two spur gears 6 and 8, worm 7 and worm wheel gear 9 * * * S. * *..*.S * should have a substantial gear reduction, such as 1: 200. Also, worm wheel gear 9 will need to be attached to the cable pulley 2.
The operation of the invention is as follows. The motor 10 is reversed immediately upon sensing that the motor stalled, even if the motor 10 has not reached its reversing position. For example, attempting to flip a seat while something, such as a bag, is on the seat, will not succeed. If the seat cannot be flipped, this will restrict the actuator and cause the motor 10 to stall. In this case, the motor 10 will be immediately reversed. In normal operation, without any restriction on the actuator, the motor 10 will run until the motor 10 reaches its reversing position, i.e. when the stopper 11 is contacted at this position preventing any further movement of the motor 10 in the same direction. Thus the motor stalls and is reversed, i.e. driven in the opposite sense until it reaches it original or starting position where it will again stall because of the impediment of the stopper 11 at this position.
Although the invention has been described in terms of preferred embodiments, nevertheless changes will be evident to those of ordinary skill in the art from the teachings hereof. Such changes are deemed to fall within the purview of the claims. * ** * S * * S. * * S e.e * .* * . . S.
