Abstract

246,033. Ludwick, H. V. July 6, 1925. Force-transmitting mechanism; hand and foot actuation.-An equalizing transmission system for the brakes on the four wheels of a motor vehicle comprises an operating shaft connected to the driving elements of a pair of differential gear units each of which is arranged to equalise the braking force applied to the brakes on one side of the vehicle, the shaft being cranked to equalize the force applied as between the brakes on the two sides. A hand lever and pedal may be provided for the application of the brakes. A transverse shaft in two parts 21, 29 connected by a cranked part comprising arms 30 and a rod 31 is adapted to be rocked either by a hand lever 14 or a pedal 10 connected respectively to the shaft by link 17 and arm 27 and by link 13 and arm 19. Each end of the shaft is connected by an arm 42 to the driving pinion 41 of a differential gear unit, the driven pinions 39, 40 of which carry arms 33, 46 connected respectively by rods 35, 49 to the brakes on one of the front and rear wheels. Releasing springs 37 may be arranged to act upon the rods 35, The rods 13, 17, 35, 49 are connected to the respective arms by a screw-and-nut for effecting adjustment. When the brakes are applied either by the hand-lever 14 or the pedal 10, each differential gear unit serves to equalize the force applied to the two brakes on the corresponding side and the cranked part 30, 31 of the shaft yields sufficiently under torque to ensure equalization of the braking force on opposite sides.
