Abstract

A shelf support comprising a bracket 12 adapted to be secured to a wall by a screw 14 or like fixing device driven into the wall at an angle inclined to the vertical. The bracket includes a wall contacting plate 12c from which a shelf support base 12a is cantilevered and braced by a reinforcement web 12f. An upper clamp section 12b is hinged to the base and clamps about a shelf (15, fig 1) when a screw 14 is positioned in an aperture 12e.

Description

Shelf Support and Shelf This invention relates to shelf supports and shelves.
Conventionally, a wall shelf arrangement comprises a pair of brackets secured to a wall and a shelf resting on or fixed to the brackets. The brackets are fixed to the wall by drilling the wall, usually two bores to receive plugs or cavity wall inserts, and passing screws through pre-drilled bores in the brackets.
This is quite a skilled and time-consuming operation, if the shelf is to be level and secure, and at the right height, involving a spirit level and accurate marking -and then drilling -of the wall. Either before, or when, the brackets are in place, the shelf is usually secured to them by additional screws, at least one, preferably two, to each bracket.
The present invention provides improved shelf supports and shelves.
The invention comprises a shelf support comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to a wall by a screw or like fixing device driven into the wall at an angle inclined to the vertical.
The bracket may in this way be secured to the wall by a single screw, and a single bracket can support a shelf.
The bracket may comprise a wrap-around arrangement comprising a base on which the shelf sits and a clamp section hinged to the base that engages the upper surface of the shelf and locks closed on it. The shelf may be recessed so that when the clamp section is in place the shelf upper surface is continuous.
The bracket may comprise a wall-contacting plate with a cantilevered shelf support base and an angled aperture for the fixing screw. The aperture may be angled at 45° to the vertical so that the screw is driven downwardly. The screw may be driven through an aperture in the clamp section of a wrap-around arrangement so that it locks the clamp section to the wall contacting plate as it mounts the shelf and bracket on the wall.
The bracket may comprise a reinforcement web between the wall contacting plate and the shelf support base.
The bracket may comprise a one piece moulding in any suitable material, which may be a plastics material such as nylon.
One embodiment of a shelf support and shelf according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the shelf support and shelf mounted on a wall; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the shelf support; Figure 3 is a front elevation of the support of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a plan view of the support of Figure 2; Figure 5 is a side elevation of the support of Figure 2; Figure 6 is a view to a larger scale of the portion B of Figure 5; Figure 7 is a view to a larger scale of the portion C of Figure 5: Figure 8 is a view to a larger scale of the portion D of Figure 5; Figure 9 is a side elevation of the support illustrating the wall-drilling step; Figure 10 is a side elevation like Figure 9 illustrating the mounted shelf.
Thee drawings illustrate a shelf support 11 comprising a bracket 12 adapted to be secured to a wall 13 by a screw or like fixing device 14 driven into the wall 13 at an angle inclined to the vertical.
The bracket 12 is in this way secured to the wall 13 by a single screw 13, and the shelf 15 is secured to the wall 13 by a single bracket 12.
The bracket 12 comprises a wrap-around arrangement comprising a base 12a on which the shelf 15 sits and a clamp section 12b hinged to the base 12a that engages the upper surface l5a of the shelf 15 and locks closed on it. The shelf 15 is recessed at 15a so that when the clamp sectionl5b is in place the shelf upper surface 12a is continuous. The recessed part of the shelf is also chamfered as seen in Figure 10 to accommodate the apertured parts 12d, 12e, see below.
The bracket 12 comprises a wall-contacting plate 12c from which the shelf support base 12a is cantilevered, and an angled aperturel2d for the fixing screw 16 (Fig 10). The aperture 12d is angled at 450 to the vertical so that the screw 16 is driven downwardly.
The screw 16 is driven through an aperture l2e in the clamp section 12b of the wrap-around arrangement so that it locks the clamp section l2b to the wall contacting plate l2c as it mounts the shelf 15 and bracket 12 on the wall 13.
The bracket 12 comprises a reinforcement web l2f between the wall contacting plate 12c and the shelf support base I 2a.
The bracket 12 comprises a one piece moulding in nylon.
Figures 9 and 10 illustrate the mounting procedure. The bracket 12, without the shelf 15, is held to the wall 13 with the clamp section l2b closed so that its aperture 12e is aligned with the aperture 12d of the plate 12c. A drill bit 17 is then inserted into these aligned apertures to engage the wall 13. Allowing the bracket to depend from the drill bit 17 automatically levels it so that the aligned apertures act as a drilling guide.
Once the hole is drilled, the clamp section 12b is opened and the shelf 15 introduced, the clamp section being then closed around it. A wall plug 18 is inserted through the once again aligned apertures 12d, 12e and a screw 16 driven home.
