Abstract
A portable, electrically powered mitre saw 1 comprises a base (2, fig 1), and a table 3 rotatably supported on the base and having a diametral or radial slot (4, fig 1) to accommodate the cutting edge of a circular saw blade (5, fig 1). An articulated support means 12 extends from the base and carries an electric drive motor above the table, which support means is capable of at least arcuate movement. A chip deflector 16 is located at, towards, or beyond, an end of the slot that is adjacent the support means, to deflect chips or swarf away from the saw operator. The chip deflector may comprise a mounting collar (17, fig 3) provided with two spaced apart holes (18, fig 3) to receive securing bolts 14, and a deflector plate (19, fig 3), which extends away from one edge of the collar, and which is adapted to deflect chips, or swarf, towards the ground.
Description
Title of the Invention
Powered saw, etc
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to an electrically powered mitre saw of a portable, or semi-portable kind, and to a deflector plate for incorporation in such a saw.
Background of the Invention
Portable or semi-portable mitre saws are known and find use on building sites etc principally for the cutting of timber, plastics etc. There is also a requirement for the cutting of other materials such as steel and aluminium and circular saw blades have been developed which satisfy these additional cutting capabilities. However, it has been found that, particularly during metal cutting, chips or swarf are disadvantageously projected towards the operator, who may not have access to, or may not be wearing, protective goggles, gloves, clothing etc, as may well be the case if the saw is used *:*::* virtually exclusively for timber cutting. S...
ta...' Object of the Invention A basic object of the invention is the provision of an improved, powered, mitre :: saw, and deflector plate.
*. Summary of a First Aspect of the Invention *.SS S.
: * * According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a portable, or semi-portable, electrically powered mitre saw comprising:- (i) a base, adapted, in use, to be mounted on a suitable surface such as that provided by a work bench; (ii) a table rotatably supported on the base and having a diametral or radial slot to accommodate the width of the peripheral cutting edge of a circular saw blade; V 2 (iii) an articulated support means extending from the base and carrying above the table an electric drive motor to power a circular saw blade and capable of at least arcuate movement under the manual control of the saw operator; and (iv) a chip deflector located at, towards or beyond an end of the slot that is adjacent the support means, to deflect chips or swarf away from the saw operator.
Summary of a Second Aspect of the Invention
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a chip deflector for fitting to a saw, particularly but not exclusively a mitre saw, comprising:- (I) a mounting collar provided with two spaced-apart holes to receive securing bolts to secure the chip deflector to a saw, and (ii) an a deflector plate extending away from one edge of the collar and adapted, in use, to deflect chips or swarf towards the ground.
Advantages of the Invention The provision of a chip deflector minimises, if not eliminates, the throwback of iL' swarf or chips towards the saw operator and hence minimises the possibility of burns or *:*. injury should the operator not have available, or not be wearing, suitable protective : devices, the chip deflector serving to direct chips towards the floor.
"** Preferred or Optional Features of the Invention S...
The deflector plate comprises an arcuate or curved deflector surface adapted to envelop or shroud at least partially the anticipated stream of chips or swarf.
The deflector plate surface has a smooth deflector surface.
The deflector plate is integral with the mounting collar provided with a pair of spaced-apart holes to receive fixing screws or bolts by which the deflector plate is mounted e.g. on a saw. r
The mounting collar is also provided with a third hole for association with a depth adjustor e.g. of a mitre saw.
The deflector plate is of a heatproof or heat resistant material.
The deflector plate is of magnesium.
The deflector plate is of aluminium.
The deflector plate is injection moulded in a relatively hard, synthetic plastics material.
A rear surface of the deflector plate is provided with reinforcing ribs.
The articulated support means is also capable of linear movement.
Drawings One example of deflector plate and a mitre saw incorporating such a plate is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 is a perspective view from above of a sliding mitre saw to which a chip deflector in accordance with the second aspect is to be fitted to provide a saw in accordance with the first aspect; Figure 2 is an enlarged side view of a portion of Figure 1 with the chip deflector : fitted; and Figures 3 to 7 show various views of the chip deflector.
In the drawings a portable, or semi-portable electrically powered mitre saw 1 comprises a base 2 adapted, in use, to be mounted on a suitable surface, such as that provided by a work bench. A table 3 of the saw 1 is rotatably supported on the base 2 and is provided with a diametral or radial slot 4 to accommodate the width of the peripheral cutting edge of a circular saw blade 5 which is carried by an articulated support means 6 including an operator's handle 7 having an on/off switch 8A with other r operator controls being a lever 8B a nose of which selectively engages one of a series of angular notches and a knob 8C. An electric motor for powering the blade 5 is not visible in Figure 1 as this is attached to the far side of the articulated support means 6 and is connected to the blade 5 via a gear box, which is similarly not visible in Figure 1.
The articulated support means 6 is pivotally attached at 9 to a collar 10 which bridges a pair of parallel, spaced-apart tubes 11 which are slidably adjustable with respect to a support structure 12, pass through bearings in the support structure 12 for saw adjustment purposes. The support structure 12 attached at its lower end to the table 3 also carries a rib 13 provided with two tapped holes to receive bolts 14 (Figure 2) each provided with a lock nut 15 to secure a chip deflector 16 to the saw 1.
As best seen in Figures 3 to 7 the chip deflector 16 comprises a mounting collar 17 provided with two spaced-apart holes 18 to receive the bolts 14, the mounting collar 17 being arcuate (as best seen in Figures 3 to 7) matching that of an arcuate mounting *:*::* surface of the support structure 12. Integral with the mounting collar 17 is an arcuate 1'' deflector plate 19 having side edges 20 which diverge. Whilst the deflector plate 19 is provided with a smooth deflector surface 24, so as not to impede the intended action of :: deflecting of chips or swarfe towards the ground, and not back towards the operator e.g. after striking the support structure 12 in the absence of a chip deflector 16, as indicated in Figure 1, rear surface 21 of the chip deflector 16 is provided with reinforcing ribs 22 whilst a third hole 23 is provided in the mounting collar 17 for association with a depth adjustor of a mitre saw. r
