Abstract

A door stop comprises a sheet of resilient material bent into an irregular stepped profile, having a first end with a large step and tapering to a second thin end, wherein when in use underneath a door the stop approximates a wedge shape. The two ends of the stop which contact the floor are preferably provided with non-slip foam rubber pads. The stop is preferably formed from a plastics material, which can be deformed slightly by heating to provide fine adjustment. The first end may have a stem or handle which extends therefrom. The free end of the handle may be covered with a knob or decorative head. In use the stepped profile allows the stop to be used to hold doors having different gaps in a fixed position.

Description

The Dicky door stop.
This door stop is dedicated to a close friend "Dicky" (Major Richard Pratt).
The door stop reminded me of him by the way he used to stand in the kitchen doorway at my parent's house, when he used to visit the family over the years.
He reminded me as a gentle giant as a child. Dicky stood nearly six foot tall, and a large rounded fellow, he stood aside, holding the door open for others to get through the door although there wasn't much space! The Dicky door stop speaks for itself as it holds itself to the position you want it, whether it is wide open or just ajar without any draught to slam it open or closed, It is easy for people who cannot bend over to kick it out of the way with its long neck and if you need to adjust to suit larger gaps to the floor, all you have to do is heat the base with warm water or hair dryer and bend to suit. However the stepping design should help prevent any adjustment.
Warning: Use heat protective gloves or vice to prevent burns or scolds. z
Instructions for use 1) Press stem intro base then into head. (fig 1) 2) Position door stop to where you want to position the door. (fig 2) 3) Then slowly slide door onto the stop level until enough pressure will prevent door moving either way.
4) When you want to close, open or alter door position press gently on the base then move door to unlock.
5) Warning do not flatten. If you need to add tension warm the plastic slightly until pliable using either warm water or a hairdryer (N.B. do not overheat, this will damage the strength and finish of the plastic).
6) When not in use you can hook the stop onto door lever (fig 3).
Materials: Base: 5mm x 40mm x 400mm or formed nylon/plastic.
Rubber feet: soft rubber or foam rubber Stem: 9mm x 700mm wood, steel or plastic Head: Crafted wood, plastic or steel optional (must have 9mm hole to fix onto stem) Qiiuin of my C!airn I was inspired by my idea, when I was undertaking a cleaning contract at a medical centre.
1 had to vacuum several rooms with fire doors that would keep shutting, thus trapping the wire of the Vacuum Cleaner if 1 used the one power point to do all.
To keep the doors open, I used a spoon, placing it upside-down and wedge it under each door.
This gipped the carpet and 1 found I could position the door where I wanted.
I discovered this saved time from unplugging, gathering the wire then plugging in again at each room. I also found this was more effective than a conventional wooden or rubber wedge.
I went home and worked on my design with an objective to making the stop easy to use for people with all abilities.
I had to look for a material that was pliable and robust and which has a. returnable memory.
* *. I found that a durable plastic not only had those qualities but also could be reformed in shape v suit Doors with larger gaps.
** The foam rubber pads for under the stop gives it grip and also environmentally friendly for carpets and also preventing scratching shiny floors.
