Abstract

A bed profiling device 1 suitable for fitting on top of a bed mattress comprises one or more retainers 4, 5 to retain a soft member in a specified position. The retainer may be provided in a position to retain a head supporting pillow in a required position and/or in a position to retain a knee raising pillow or padding in a required position. The retainer may take the form of a pocket. The soft member may be permanently attached to the device. More than one retainer may be provided at each position such that a user can choose which position to use depending on body proportions.

Description

RESTRAINT MEANS APPLIED TO A BED PROFILER

The use of profiling devices on beds, is well known. Such devices are commonly placed on top of the mattress and are strapped to the bed base to keep them in place.

The simplest of such devices comprises a simple elevating member that raises a pillow. Such devices can be electrically operated, manually operated or pneumatically operated. It is also common for such profiling devices to have a soft cover over the elevating member; and in some cases this soft cover is extended down the bed past the pivoting hinge of the elevating member.

Now referring to the attached drawings where:-Fig #1 shows a three dimensional view of the invention.

Fig #2 shows a side elevation of the invention.

The elevating device (I) is placed on top of the mattress and has a soft cover (2) attached to it. This soft cover (2) may finish at the hinge (6) of the elevating device (I) or may extend all or part of the way to the lower part of the bed to position (3).

It is common practice to place a pillow at position (5) for the patients head and sometimes at position (4) to raise the patients knees. The present invention relates to the addition of pockets or retaining means at positions (4) and (5) to retain the pillows or padding in the correct position. Such pockets can be formed from soft material that folds fiat if they are not required. As patients do not all have the same body proportions the relative position of the pockets to each other and to the hinge (6) can vary. As the pockets can fold fiat when not required it is possible to provide two or more pockets (not shown in figures) at positions (4) and (5). In such case the required pocket can be used to retain the pillow or filling and any unused pockets can be left flat. In another embodiment of the invention one or more of the pockets can be provided on the under surface of the soft cover (2) (3) or on the underside of the fabric covering of the soft cover (2) (3).

In further embodiments of the invention the pockets can take any other form of strap or other retaining means that can be utilised to retain a pillow or other padding material.

In another embodiment of the invention the soft cover (2) (3) may be omitted and the pockets attached to a simple material cover that replaces the soft cover (2) (3).

When the head part of the patients body is elevated there is a natural slide of the head pillow and the patients body down the bed and towards the feet end of the bed. The pocket (5) stops the head pillow sliding down and the pillow in pocket (4) stops the patient sliding down the bed by elevating the body section above the knees.

In a further embodiment of the invention one or more of the pockets can be pre filled with a pillow or padding.

Accordingly the present invention comprises a bed profiling device suitable for fitting on top of a bed mattress and comprising one or more means to retain a soft member in a specified position.

Claims

I) A bed profiling device suitable for fitting on top of a bed mattress and comprising one or more means to retain a soft member in a specified position.
2) A claim as claimed in claim 1 where means are provided to retain the patient head supporting pillow in the required position.
3) A claim as claimed in claim I where means are provided to retain a knee raising pillow or padding in the required position.
4) A claim as claimed in claim I where both claims (2) and (3) are incorporated.
5) A claim as claimed in claims 1-4 where the retention means takes the form of a pocket suitable for retaining a pillow or soft padding.
6) A claim as claimed in claims 1-5 where the pillow or soft padding is permanently attached to the device.
7) A claim as claimed in claims 1-6 where the retention means is of any other type.
8) A claim as claimed in claims 1-7 where more than one retention means are provided at each nominal position such that the user can chose which position to use depending on the body proportions of the patient.
