Abstract

A holder or support for secateurs 22 and like tools comprises a hood portion 16 that in use receives the tool to be supported and a belt loop of clip 18. The hood portion contains a number of magnets 15, preferably neodymium magnets, that hold the tool in place. In use, the magnets provide a strong attractive force holding the tool in place whilst allowing the tool to be easily removed by the user when they are required.

Description

1.1 2453179 This invention relates to a personal support means for a pair of secateurs of the type for use by gardeners and generally comprise of two handles with two rounded blades coming to a tapered point.
When gardeners are working, they frequently need to put the secateurs down, when not required for application of pruning / cutting shrubs / trees and the like, typically the secateurs are put down on the floor or inserted into a material pouch / sheath, which albeit holds the secateurs, are awkward to use in as much as the secateurs have to be pushed into the pouch/sheath.
Albeit secateurs are of a similar shape, sizes do differ and ease of insertion and extraction of present holders is somewhat difficult and can be time consuming, along with fact that when the blades of the secateurs are being inserted the sharp / pointed areas are un protected from the gardeners waist / leg area.
It is an object of the present invention to provide means of supporting the secateurs of the type described to the clothing of the gardener, preferably to the belt around the waist, whereby the secateurs, when not in use are in a known position an immediately available for use.
In one aspect, the invention provides an apparatus for supporting the secateurs described about the gardener, the apparatus comprising a body member comprising of a hood and skirt, the hood incorporating magnet means to attract and maintain the blades in contact with the hood area and means removably to attach the body member (secateurs) to the person of the gardener.
In apparatus to the invention means may comprise a shoulder strap or neck strap but preferably comprises a hook or loop for tempory fastening to the clothing, such as either over the waist band of the trousers or around a belt.
The body member is preferably formed from a material which is impervious to liquid and which is relatively stiff or unyielding to allow intimate contact and thus optimum magnetic attraction between the support hood and the blade of the secateurs. The apparatus incorporates magnet means which may be applied to one or other of the surfaces of the hood, but are preferably sandwiched between ,.4 two layers or laminates of suitable material, glued together. In this way the magnets themselves contribute to the stiffness of the hood.
A suitable material material for the body member of apparatus according to the invention is linoleum or vinyl flooring or plastic molding encapsulating the magnet between the layers of the hood area.
Any suitable adhesive may be used to glue the pieces together, such as contact adhesive or a cyanoacrylate adhesive, alternatively the body member could be formed encapsulating the magnet area into the hood by plastic injection molding procedures.
The magnet means preferably comprise neodymium magnets, generally made from a combination of neodymium, iron and boron. Such magnets have high magnetic strength for their size and are available as relatively thin flat wafers.
However other magnetic materials may be used in the alternative such as materials including by way of example samarium-cobalt magnets.
In apparatus according to the present invention, the magnets are preferably distributed spaced apart in the front surface of the hood area, of the same magnetic strengths.
In use, placement of the secateurs blades into the hood will result in a strong attractive force urging the blades of the secateurs in contact with the hood and retaining it by magnetic attraction until required again for use.
The position of the magnets in the outer part of the hood enables it to be removed easily due to the fact that the handles are slightly raised away from the skirt, to remove the secateurs they are pulled down out of the hood, the skirt protecting the gardeners leg from any contact with the blades of the secateurs, to attach the secateurs the handles are held as normal and slide the blade area into the hood sliding up the skirt again avoiding any contact with the gardeners leg area.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a secateurs support showing the disposition of the magnets; Figure 2 is a cross section of the embodiment of figure 1 Figure 3 shows the embodiment of figure 1 with secateurs supported and protected therein Figure 4 shows the embodiment of figure 3 how the secateurs are inserted and extracted With reference firstly to figure 1, the secateurs support consists of two layers or laminate 11 shows the belt loop, 12 shows the magnet positioning, 13 shows the area of the hood, 14 shows the skirt.
Figure 2, shows a cross section, 15 shows the embodiment of the magnets (darkened areas), 16 the hood as it stands away from the back plate of the invention, 17 shows the protective skirt, 18 shows the belt loop / clip.
Figure 3, shows the invention with the secateurs in situ, 19 being the magnet placement, 20 being the protective skirt, 21 being the belt loop/clip, 22 showing the secateurs in situ.
Figure 4, shows the invention with the secateurs being placed into the apparatus 23, and 24 showing the removal.
it is an object of the present invention to provide means of supporting the secateurs of the type described to the clothing of the gardener, preferably to the belt around the waist, whereby the secateurs, when not in use are in a known position an immediately available for use.
