Abstract

A headrest comprises support means which allows the headrest cushion to be positioned at any desired angle. Profiled head cushion 11 is supported by a ball joint [8a, Figure 10] mounted on a slider 8 which can move laterally along a curved cross bar 7. The curved cross bar is mounted on a pivot tube 2 through support plates 3a,3b and locked by a lock screw 6. The pivot tube is mounted to an attachment stem 1. The ball joint is received by a U-shaped clamp socket 9 mounted to the headrest cushion 11. Screw 10 can be used to clamp the ball within the socket. The ball joint, slider 8, and pivot tube 2 allow the headrest cushion to adopt a wide range of angular positions [see Figures 1-7]. Vertical adjustment can be provided by the slotted stem 1.

Description

1 2453165 Universal Headrest This invention relates to a device to support the head of a person, whose head may be positioned offset to one side. Such persons may be in a wheelchair. The headrest it's especially suitable for use with wheelchair recliners or wheelchair platforms that allow dental and other medical procedures to take place whilst the patient remains within their wheelchair.
When people have neurological or physical disabilities that produce postures where the head is not head upright in a central position, the need for a headrest that can be adjusted to take up the correct position of their head is necessary. This head position may also involve left or rightward rotation as well as an offset left or right. The Universal Headrest' allows for full adjustment to take up any necessary position for head support.
The device includes a non-circular bar along which a slider can move to adjust for lateral head position and a universal lockable ball joint to adjust for any angular tilt of the head. The headrest cushion is profiled to give both head and neck support.
Description
The drawings shown in Fig 1 to Fig. 8 indicate the operation of the universal headrest and an overview of its form.
The headrest is attached to the wheelchair or wheelchair tilting device by the attachment stem (1). This will change in design according to the supporting mechanism. The Pivot Tube (2) allows the whole headrest assembly to pivot about is long axis. Support Plates (3a & 3b) engage with the ends of the Pivot tube (2) and Headed End Bushes (4 & 5) pass through the Support Plates (3a & 3b) and enter the ends of the Pivot Tube (2). The whole pivot assembly can be locked in place by threaded Lock Screw (6) that passes through End Bush (4) and screws into End Bush (5).
The Slider Cross Member (7) is of non-circular form such that the Slider (8) will not rotate about it. The Slider Cross Member is curved to advance the Headrest Cushion (11) towards the wheelchair occupant when the head is in an offset position.
The Headrest Cushion (11) is supported by a Clamp (9) in which there are seating pads to locate either side of the Spherical Ball (8a) which is attached to the Slider (8)..
The Clamp (9) can be tightened over the Spherical ball (8a) by Tightening Screw (10).
This enables fully universal motion of the Headrest Cushion.
Headrest Cushion (11) is profiled to support both head and neck with a composite foam interior that has harder foams on the outer sides to give support whilst the inner section is soft.

Claims (8)

  1. Claims I. The Headrest Cushion (11) can be positioned at any rotated angle about any axis or combination of axes.
  2. 2. The Headrest Cushion as claimed in claim 1 is supported on a spherical ball by a U' shaped Clamp (9) that can be locked across the ball with a Tightening Screw (10)
  3. 3. The Headrest Cushion (11) can be laterally positioned using a slider on a Slider Cross Member (7)
  4. 4. The Headrest Cushion as claimed in claim 3 has the Spherical Ball (8a) mounted on a Slider (8) that moves along a Slider Cross Member (7) of non-circular Cross Section.(7) that is curved to give good access to the disabled person
  5. 5. The headrest assembly can be moved forwards and backwards by making adjustments to the attachment stem (1) angle and rotating the whole headrest assembly about the lateral axis of a pivot..
  6. 6. The Headrest Assembly as claimed in claim 5 is attached to a Pivot Tube (2) by Support Plates (3a &3b) these being located on the Pivot tube centre by the headed End Bushes (4 & 5)
  7. 7. The Headrest Assembly as claimed in claim 5 is locked in position by a Lock Screw (6) clamping the Support Plates (3a & 3b) across the end of the Pivot Tube. (2).
  8. 8. The Headrest Assembly can be raised or lowered by clamping through a slot in the Attachment Arm (I) at different places.
