METHOD AND PACKING MACHINE FOR FOLDING A COLLAR AND
BLANK ABOUT A GROUP OF CIGARETTES
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a method and packing machine for folding a collar and blank about a group of cigarettes.
BACKGROUND ART
Currently marketed packing machines for producing packets of cigarettes are capable of producing high-quality rigid hinged-lid packets of cigarettes at high speed from vertical blanks (i.e. in which the panels forming the lateral walls of the packet are not connected directly to one another), but do not operate so well with horizontal blanks (i.e. in which the panels forming the lateral walls of the packet are connected directly to one another at the longitudinal edges).
Horizontal blanks are now being used more and more, by being particularly suitable for producing rigid hinged-lid packets with an other than parallelogram-shaped cross section (e.g. oval or triangular), and for producing rigid hinged-lid packets in which the lid is hinged to a minor transverse edge (so-called ZIPPO" packets).
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method and packing machine for folding a collar and blank about a group of cigarettes, and which are designed to eliminate the aforementioned drawbacks, while at the same time being cheap *and easy to implement.
According to the present invention, there are provided a method and packing machine for folding a collar and blank about a group of cigarettes, as claimed in the accompanying Claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
A non-limiting embodiment of the present invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1-3 show a succession of schematic views in perspective of a packing station, of a packing machine in accordance with the present invention, folding a collar and blank about a group of cigarettes.
PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
The attached drawings show a packing machine 1 for folding a collar 2 and blank 3 about a group of cigarettes. The packing machine 1 comprises a packing conveyor 4 (more specifically, a packing wheel) with at least one tubular spindle 5 (more specifically, a number of tubular spindles 5 equally spaced about the packing wheel); a first feed device for feeding the collar 2 and blank 3 onto the tubular spindle 5, so that the blank 3 is superimposed on the collar 2; a first folding device for folding the collar 2 and blank 3 together about the tubular spindle 5 to form, about the tubular spindle 5, a tubular package having two open ends; a second folding device for folding the blank 3 onto the group of cigarettes to close a first end; a second feed device for feeding the group of cigarettes into the tubular spindle 5 through an open second end; and a transfer device for removing the tubular package, together with the group of is cigarettes, axially from the spindle 5.
The blank 3 is withdrawn from the bottom of a first hopper 6, and is fed over and suitably gwnmed by a spray gumming device 8; the collar 2 is then withdrawn from the, bottom of a second hopper 7, is fed over and suitably gummed by the gumming device 8, and is superimposed on the blank 3; and the superimposed collar 2 and blank 3 are then fed to the tubular spindle 5 before the group of cigarettes. In other words, the collar 2 is superimposed beforehand on the blank 3, so as to fold the superimposed collar 2 and blank 3 together about the tubular spindle 5.
The spray gumming device 8 is located close to the outlet of the second hopper 7, and the two hoppers 6 and 7 are located on opposite sides of, and aligned with, the spindle 5, so the blank 3 and collar 2 only perform straight-line movements.
Preferably, the superimposed collar 2 and blank 3 are first clamped to the tubular spindle 5 by a clamping body 9, and the collar 2 and blank 3 are then folded into a "V" about the spindle 5 by a rigid V-shaped folding member 10. The clamping body 9 is located in the middle of the folding member 10, and is movable vertically with respect to the folding member 10 to press the superimposed collar 2 and blank 3 with a given force onto the tubular spindle 5 as the folding member 10 moves down.
Once folded into a "V'1 about the spindle 5, the collar 2 and blank 3 are folded further to form a tubular package having two open ends. A first end is then closed by folding the blank 3 onto the group of cigarettes, while a second end is left open to permit both insertion of a group of cigarettes and axial removal of the tubular package, together with the group of cigarettes, from the spindle 5. At this point, the tubular package and the group of cigarettes are transferred axially from the tubular.
spindle 5 into a tubular seat of a further packing conveyor (normally a packing conveyor belt), and the second end is folded to complete folding of the blank 3 about the group of cigarettes.
A first end located between the tubular spindle and the tubular seat is therefore folded before the tubular package and the group of cigarettes are transferred axially from the tubular spindle 5 intO the tubular seat. preferably, the tubular package and * 5 the group of cigarettes are transferred axially from the tubular spindle 5 into the tubular seat by * pushing the group of cigarettes; and the collar 2 has at least one bottom tab, which is folded onto an inner surface.of the first end to clamp the collar 2 between the group of cigarettes and the blank 3, and prevent relative movement between the collar 2 and blank 3 during axial removal from the spindle 5.
In one possible embodiment, the cigarette packing machine 1 comprises a group-forming station for forming groups of cigarettes; a first packing * station for folding a sheet of foil inner packing material about each group of cigarettes; a second packing station (shown in the attached drawings) for folding a collar 2 and a sheet of outer packing material * (i.e. a blank 3) about each group of cigarettes and on top of the sheet of inner packing material; a first storage station for storing the sheets of inner, packing material; a second storage station for storing' the sheets of outer packing material; and a third storage station, located between the first and second storage station, for storing the collars.
The packing machine 1 also comprises a frame having a vertical front surface and a vertical rear surface opposite the front surface. The group-forming station and the packing stations are located on the front surface of the frame, and the storage stations are located facing the rear surface of the frame, on the opposite side of the frame to the group-forming and packing stations.
More specifically, the first storage station is located facing the rear surface of the frame, at the first packing station, and the second storage station is located facing the rear surface of the frame, at -the second packing station. The first packing station is provided with a first feed unit for withdrawing and feeding the sheets of inner packing material from the first storage station; the second packing station is provided with a second feed unit for withdrawing and feeding the sheets of outer packing material from the second storage station; the frame has a horizontal top surface connecting the front surface to the rear surface; and the feed units are * preferably located on the top surface.
The packing machine 1 and method described above are particularly advantageous for producing high-* quality rigid hinged-lid packets of cigarettes at high speed from horizontal blanks (i.e. in which the panels forming the lateral walls of the packet are* connected directly to one another at the longitudinal edges); are therefore particularly suitable for producing rigid hinged-lid packets with an other than parallelogram-shaped cross section (e.g. oval or triangular); and are also particularly suitable for producing rigid hinged-lid packets in which the lid is hinged to a minor transverse edge (so-called "ZIPPO" packets).
It should be pointed out, however, that the packing machine 1 and method described above may be used to advantage for folding any type of collar 2 and any type of blank 3 about a group of cigarettes.
