Abstract

245,220. Avery, Ltd., W. & T., and Bradley, L. C. Oct. 9, 1924. Indicating-mechanism.-In weighing-apparatus in which the indicating-mechanism is freed after the application of the load by insertion of a coin, the indicating mechanism is operated through a toothed member which is actuated by the release of energy stored in a spring coupling it to the resistant mechanism during the application of the load, the release of the energy being effected by a coin, and both the disconnection of the toothed member from the resistant mechanism and the return of the indicating mechanism to zero being effected by the removal of the load. As applied to a machine having pendulum resistants 37, Fig. 1, and an indicating-finger rotating over a graduated scale, the rotation of the finger is effected by a rack 12, engaging a pinion 10. The rack is partly disposed within a tube 13 and is surrounded therein by a spring 14, Fig. 4, abutting against the tube and a plunger 15. It is connected to the plunger 15 by a pawl 17 held in engaged position by a magnet 18 and a spring 19. When a load is applied the pendulums 35 move the tube 13 upwards, the spring 14 being compressed, since the rack is prevented from moving by a finely toothed wheel 23 on the spindle 11 of the indicating-finger being held at zero by a fixed tooth 24 on a lever 26.The lever 26 is connected by a rod 28 to a counterweighted coin lever 29 which tilts under the control of a dash pot 31, when a coin is inserted in a bucket 30, and disengages the tooth 24. The rack, controlled by a dash pot 22, is then moved up by the spring 14 to indicate the weight, the indicating-finger being locked in this position by a second tooth 25 on the lever 26 engaging the locating wheel 23, thereby preventing any addition to the load from being indicated. A gravity rod 20 secured to the heel of the pawl 17 is carried upwards with the rack away from a lateral support on the lever 26, and, when the load is removed and the downward movement of the tube 13, removes the magnet 18 from its major attractive position relative to the pawl, this rod disconnects the pawl and rack from the plunger 15 and hence from the weighing mechanism. The removal of the load causes the levers 29, 26 to return to normal position and release the wheel 23, thereby allowing the rack to descend and return the indicating finger to zero. The pendulums 37 are positioned at their zero position by means of two magnets 38.
