Abstract
There is provided a nutritional composition comprising carbohydrate, caffeine, and one or more antioxidants, wherein the amount of antioxidant present in the composition is at least 10% by weight of the amount of caffeine. Also provided is a method of making such a composition, its use and a packaged product.
Description
Nutritional Ccmpoition The present invention relates to improved
nutritional compositions and to methods of making the same. In particular the invention relates to nutritional products which help to improve performance of athletes, active people or those driving long distances or operating machinery.
When people exercise they perspire and the resultant loss of water may lead to dehydration, impaired heat dissipation, reduced exercise performance and potential health problems. Prolonged exercise may also deplete the carbohydrate energy stores of the body leading to reduced exercise performance. Ingesting both fluid and carbohydrate during exercise can replace some of the fluid lost and the energy stores used up and may enhance performance.
Nutritional compositions for consumption during exercise are known. People driving long distances or operating machinery also take such compositions to help them stay alert and maintain performance.
. 25 Compositions of this kind often include caffeine as a * ** stimulant. Caffeine is known to increase capacity for S...
mental or physical labour. However, there are a number of disadvantages associated with caffeine use, particularly when high doses are taken. These negative effects may include blurred vision and impaired motor control. There S S. S. * - * are also potential adverse effects on cardiac function as S..
caffeine can increase arterial stiffness and increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a nutritional composition suitable for ingestion by athletes, active people and/or those driving or operating machinery having improved properties.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a nutritional composition comprising carbohydrate, caffeine, and one or more antioxidants, wherein the amount of antioxidant present in the composition is at least 10% by weight of the amount of caffeine.
Preferably the amount of antioxidant present in the composition is at least 15% by weight, more preferably at least 18% by weight and most preferably at least 20% by weight of the amount of caffeine.
Suitably the amount of antioxidant may be up to 80% by weight of the amount of caffeine. Preferably it is up to 70%, more preferably up to 60%, preferably up to 50%, more preferably up to 45% and most preferably up to 35% by weight of the amount of caffeine.
". 25 In an especially preferred embodiment, the composition * *.
comprises antioxidant in an amount of from 25 to 35% by **** weight of the amount of caffeine. This percentage is :.:::. calculated as weight of antioxidant x 100.
weight of caffeine * ** S. * * Throughout this specification, unless otherwise stated, S..
any amounts of antioxidant mentioned relate to the total weight of all antioxidants present in the composition.
Carbohydrates suitable for use in the present invention include sugars, starches, oligosaccharj and polysaccharjdes A mixture of two or more carbohydrates may be used.
Preferred carbohydrates for use in the invention are dextrins. Especially preferred is maltodextjn.
The composition may also contain one or more monosaccharides, for example, dextrose.
The weight ratio of carbohydrate to caffeine in the composition of the present invention is preferably from 1000:1 to 50:1, more preferably from 750:1 to 100:1, preferably from 600:1 to 200:1 and most preferably from 500:1 to 300:1.
The weight ratio of carbohydrate to antioxidant is preferably from 5000:1 to 200:1, more preferably from 3000:1 to 500:1 and most preferably from 2000:1 to 1000:1.
The composition of the present invention may comprise a single antioxidant or it may comprise two or more . 25 antjoxjdants. * ** S... * S S...
In preferred embodiments the composition comprises at least two antioxidants. S'S
S
The or each antioxidant compound present in the composition of the present invention is preferably selected from polypheno]. antioxicjants.
The or each antioxidant may be independently selected from tannin, lignin and flavonoid polyphenol antioxidants.
Preferably the or each antioxidant is a flavonoid antioxidant.
The composition preferably comprises an antioxidant obtainable from a fruit source, most preferably from a berry, for example blackcurrant. Such an antioxidant is preferably selected from flavonoid antioxidants, especially from anthocyanin antioxidants. The composition preferably comprises a cassis polyphenol. Most preferably the composition comprises a cassis bioflavonoid, especially a cassis anthocyanin.
The composition may comprise a further antioxidant obtainable from a fruit source, preferably a citrus fruit, for example grapefruit. Such an antioxidant is preferably selected from flavonoid antioxidants. Preferably the composition comprises a citrus flavonoid antioxidant.
Most preferably the composition comprises naringin.
In an especially preferred embodiment, the composition comprises a first antioxidant obtainable from a berry and *.. 25 a second antioxidant obtainable from a citrus fruit. * S. ***S * S S...
The weight ratio of the first antioxidant to second antioxidant is preferably from 1:5 to 100:1, more preferably from 1:2 to 50:1 and most preferably from 1:1 to 20:1. * S. *. S
