Description

An Exercise Device The present invention relates generally to an
exercise device, and more particularly to an aerobic step exercise device, an exercise monitoring device adapted to be fitted to an exercise device and an exercise device assembly.
An Aerobic Step is common equipment for exercise and training and is increasing in popularity in homes as it is generally regarded as a cheaper and more space saving alternative to larger exercise apparatus such as treadmills and exercise cycles. The apparatus simply comprises a single step to which the user repeatedly climbs up and down from.
A problem with such devices is that they do not provide a user with any physical or physiological data of the exercise regime. For example, the number of steps taken, distance climbed or calorie consumption etc. are not provided to a user.
Such information can be helpful to a user seeking to engage in safe and productive exercise and helps to decrease the likelihood and occurrence of stress-induced trauma or injury. Furthermore, an absence of such information prevents a user moniLoring their exercise regime and monitoring their fitness levels.
It is an object of aspects of the present invention to provide a solution to the abovementioned or other problems.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an exercise device comprising a step having an exercise surface thereon, the exercise surface being operable, in use, to be stood upon by a user during exercise, wherein the exercise device further comprises sensing means operable, in use, to detect the presence of a user on the exercise surface and being arranged to output a signal in response to the said detected presence.
The present invention also extends to an exercise monitoring device that is attachable to an existing exercise device.
Therefore, according to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided an exercise monitoring device comprising an exercise surface, the exercise surface being operable, in use, to be stood upon by a user during exercise, wherein the exercise monitoring device further comprises sensing means operable, in use, to detect the presence of a user on the exercise surface and being arranged to output a signal in response to the said detected presence.
Preferably, the sensing means comprises at least one pressure sensor. Preferably, the at least one pressure sensor is operable to deteoL a pressure applied Lo aL least a portion of the exercise surface.
It is preferred that the sensing means is of an electromechanical nature such as an accelerometer or pressure switch, however other sensors, preferably those that detect motion, could be used without departing from scope of the invention. Such sensors could utilise mechanical, optical, acoustic, vibration or other sensing means.
Preferably, the sensing means is operable to measure a user's weight when the user is stood on the exercise surface.
During normal exercise, a user steps onto and off of the exercise surface. Therefore, advantageously, the sensing means is operable to sense when a user is on or off the exercise surface, which information is outputted as the output signal.
Preferably, the exercise device further comprises processing means operable to receive and process the signal from the sensing means.
Preferably, the exercise device further comprises communication means operable to communicate information to a user. Preferably, the communication means is operable to communicate information relating to the signal from the sensing means.
Preferably, the processing means is operable to provide information to the communication means, which information the communication means may then communicate to a user.
Examples of suitable processing means include, for example, a computer or microchip.
Preferably, the processing means is arranged to process the signal using reference mathematical algorithms.
Preferably, the reference mathematical algorithms are stored on the processing means.
Preferably, the exercise device or exercise monitoring means comprises a clock timer, which may be part of or in communication with the processing means.
Preferably, various parameters may be calculated by the processing means in response to the signal received from the sensing means. For example, the processing means may be arranged to calculate one or more of the following parameters: distance travelled; height travelled; total number of steps taken; total time of exercise; average step speed. One or more of such parameters may be provided to the communication means and may be thus communicated to a user. In one embodiment, one or more of the various parameters may he calculated (arid communicated) in real time (during exercise) Alternatively and additionally, these parameters could be stored by the processing means and time average values could be calculated.
Preferably, the communication means comprises a visual display element, such as for example, a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) . Alternatively or additionally, the communication means may comprise an audible element, such as a speaker.
In one embodiment, the communication means may be attached or integral to the exercise device. However, in an alternative embodiment, it is preferred that the communication means may be remote from the exercise device. For example, the communication device may comprise a wrist watch worn by a user during exercise.
Advantageously, an exercise monitoring device according to the present invention may be attachable to an existing exercise device, thus a user may use an exercise monitoring device of the present invention on their existing exercise device and further, a user may use the monitoring device on different existing exercise devices.
For example, a user may use an exercise monitoring device on an exercise device in the home and use the same exercise monitoring device on a different exercise device at the gym, for example. In this manner, the user's exercise regimes may be recorded and compared in different surroundings.
Preferably, the exercise device or exercise monitoring device further comprises user input means, operable to allow a user to input one or more variables to the processing means. The user input means may comprise a keypad, for example. Examples of suitable variables which a user may input include but are not restricted to: the users desired duration of exercise session (in terms of time, distance travelled, height travelled, number of steps taken etc.); known physiological values of a user, such as Body Mass Index (BMI) or age.
Using such inputted variables, the exercise device or exercise monitoring device is capable, using stored mathematical algorithms, to calculate various physiological values expended during the exercise. An example of one such value would be the number of calories used.
Preferably, the communication means is operable to provide feedback to a user during exercise. Such feedback could direct the user as to the correct exercise regime for maximum benefit by regulating the exercise duration and exercise pace so as to ensure safe and productive exercise. Preferably, groups of differing exercise pace's may be combined to form more complex "exercise programmes" providing regimes with "warm up" and "cool down" periods.
Preferably, a user may select such exercise programmes during use. Additionally, the exercise monitor may compare the user's exercise pace with its own feedback pace and inform the user of correct and incorrect exercise actions through the visual or audible display.
Preferably, the processing means comprises data storage means for the storage of previous exercise data to enable a user to monitor his progress over a period of time. The data storage means could be located locally to the exercise device (or exercise monitoring device) or could be located remotely or both. Where the data is transferred to a remote data receiving station the data could be transferred either wirelessly or by use of a physical cable connected to an output socket located on the exercise device (or exercise monitoring device) According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided an exercise device assembly comprising an exercise device and an exercise monitoring device, the exercise monitoring device comprising an exercise surface, the exercise surface being operable, in use, to be stood upon by a user during exercise, wherein the exercise monitoring device further comprises sensing means operable, in use, to detect the presence of a user on the exercise surface and being arranged to output a signal in response to the said detected presence.
All of the features disclosed herein may be combined with any of the above aspects and in any configuration.
Detailed description of the Preferred Embodiment
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a side cross sectional view of an exercise device.
Although preferred illustrative embodiments of the present invention are shown, it will be evident to one skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Figure 1 shows an exercise device 10 comprising a step 1, having a stepping area 2 (an exercise surface) located on an upper surface thereof so as to substantially cover the upper surface. Sensing means being pressure sensiLive switches 3 are located between the stepping surface and an upper surface of the step 1.
Processor 4, is located under the step 1 and communicates with the pressure sensitive switches 3 via a solid (wired) connection therebetween. The processor 4 contains a clock-timer and a memory.
A keypad 7 is located in a side of the step 1 and is electrically connected to processor 4. Visual display unit and audible speaker 6 are located externally to step 1 and each communicate with the processor 4 via a solid (wired) connection therebetween.
It is envisaged that the solid (wired) communications mentioned above could be replaced by wireless communication, such as by radio communication.
In use, a user sets his desirable exercise variables in processor 4 by means of user control keypad 7 and the variables are stored in the processor memory.
When a user steps onto the stepping area 2, pressure is detected by pressure sensitive switches 3, thus causing a signal to be passed to the processor 4. The processor 4 registers the exercise step and updates the display in visual display 5 to show the step has been counted.
At a predetermined time interval following the detection of an exercise step, the processor 4 emits an audible tone through the speaker 6. The processor 4 then monitors the time interval between emitting the tone and detection of a subsequenL step on the pressure sensitive swiLches 3. Upon detection of the step, the processor 4 compares the time interval with a stored value time interval from memory 8.
If the time interval is greater than the predetermined time interval, the processor 4 emits an audible tone through the speaker 6 and indicates the user should speed up on the visual display 5. If the time interval is less than the predetermined time interval, the processor 4 emits an audible tone through the speaker 6 and indicates that the user should slow down on the visual display 5.
In a preferred embodiment, the processor 4 displays an exercise time duration, an exercise time countdown and the number of steps taken in the visual display 5. Preferably, the processor 4 also calculates the number of calories burnt during the exercise and displays this information on the visual display 5. In a preferred embodiment the processor 4 calculates and displays both the instantaneous calorie usage and the total calorie usage.
The process described above is then repeated until the processor 4 determines the exercise duration is complete or the processor 4 does not detect an exercise step for a predetermined timeout period.
At the end of the exercise regime, the processor 4 instructs the visual display unit 5 and audible speaker 6 to indicate the end of the exercise session.
It will be appreciated by one skilled in the art that although the above description relates to an exercise device according to the present invention, an exercise monitoring device made in accordance with the present invention functions in the same way. Furthermore, an exercise monitoring device will comprise all of the same parts as the device described above, except the step element. Instead, the exercise surface (having pressure sensitive switches on an underside thereof) will be placed on an existing step, and removed when not required.
An exercise device and exercise monitoring device made in accordance with the present invention provides a user an easy way to monitor their exercise sessions, thus enabling a user to exercise safely and efficiently.
