Abstract
Personal exercise apparatus comprises an instructor device 2 and a personal performer device 3. The two devices are interactive whereby a user can coordinate an exercise activity with a selected exercise programme. The personal performer device 3 may take the form of a mat 3 and step 7 divided into pressure sensitive squares 6,8. The user steps on the squares following an exercise routine selected from the instructor device 2. The results of the exercise routine are checked and monitored by suitable circuitry.
Description
EXERCISE APPARATUS
The invention relates to exercise apparatus, particularly to personal exercise apparatus which a user can use for maintaining or increasing personal fitness, having a regular work out, or training.
Fitness is an increasing important aspect of modern day life, as witnessed by the number of gyms, health clubs and the like to which members of the public, or users, subscribe. In such places there is a variety of exercise machines on which users exercise, there usually being a qualified trainer in attendance. However, the disadvantage of this system, in addition to the cost, is the time a user has to invest in attendance at say a gym.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to seek to mitigate these disadvantages.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided personal exercise apparatus, comprising an instructor device and a personal performer device, the two devices being interactive whereby a user can coordinate an exercise activity with a selected exercise programme.
Thus using the invention a user can physically perform an exercise routine while emulating a routine of the instructor device. It will be understood that the terms "exercise", "training", "work out" and the like used herein are interchangeable terms.
The instructor device may comprise a console or PC and a software medium device which carries exercise programmes for a user which are viewable via the console or PC.
The personal performer device may comprise a pressure sensitive device for receiving the user and which is adapted to provide a signal whereby a user can synchronise an exercise routine with that on the console or PC. This is a particularly simple yet effective arrangement.
The pressure sensitive device may comprise a mat adapted to be stepped on by a user during an exercise programme. This is relatively simple, inexpensive, yet efficient, particularly when the mat may comprise a plurality of separate pressure sensitive areas.
These areas receive the user, suitably the mat being square and there may be a grid of nine equal squares which may comprise the plurality of separate pressure sensitive areas.
For efficient and positive operation, each square may be of an area adapted to receive two feet of a user.
To increase the options available to a user, the mat may have a step at one side.
This provides for a step-up, step-down exercise, and the step may have a length substantially equal to the length of one side of the mat and being pressure sensitive.
Suitably the step may have three interactive sections each equal to the width of a square.
For ease of use on a floor, the mat may have a non-slip backing.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a personal performer device for use in personal exercising, comprising a pressure sensitive device on which a user steps during exercise.
Personal exercise apparatus embodying the invention is hereinafter described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The drawing shows schematically a perspective view of a personal exercise device according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown one embodiment of personal exercise device 1, comprising an instructor device 2 and a personal performer device 3, the two devices 2, 3 being interactive whereby a user 4 can coordinate an exercise activity with a selected exercise programme.
The instruction device 2 comprises software held on suitable media such as a CD or video tape and which comprises a selection of different fitness regimes. The instructor device 2 may be inserted into for example a video games machine or a PC, so that a selected regime can be viewed on say a TV screen 5.
The personal performer device 3 comprises in the embodiment a square mat which is divided into a grid or array of a plurality, in the embodiment nine, of squares 6 of equal area, the squares each being large enough to receive two feet of a user.
There is a step 7 at one edge, of substantially the same width as the mat 3, and which is formed into three equal sections 8 each of a length substantially equal to the length of a side of a square 6. The step 7 is height adjustable and provides the user 2 with the ability to carry out a stepping exercise.
The mat 3 and step 7 are pressure sensitive, stated in another way, the user steps on a square or squares 6 and/or on the step 7 as a result of which the action being carried out by the user 2 is checked and monitored by suitable electronic circuitry of the matlstep. The signals therefrom are fed to the instructor device 2 via an electrical cable 9 in the embodiment, but which can be a non-physical connection means such as an infra-red connector using suitable ports.
The mat 3 suitably has a durable covering such as a plastic material, and a non-slip backing 10 so that during use, the mat 3 does not slip. The squares 6 may be similar to cushions.
In use, a desired personal trainer programme or instructor device as held in the software is inserted in the video games console or PC by a user 2.
The personal performer device or mat 3 is then connected to the console or PC by, in the embodiment, the cable 9, the two devices 2, 3 are then connected interactively.
The user then chooses a desired routine, from a fitness session, regular workout, training or other selection from an options menu of the device 2. Thus (a) Fitness Session A quick way to start a workout using the settings in the options menu.
(b) Regular Workout Set-up or continue a pre-set timetable concentrating on chosen areas of the body to tone muscles, build stamina and increase fitness.
(c) Training Beginners can be taken through the routines step by step and also set-up custom step routines.
The options can be: (a) Personal Trainer Appearance The user can choose from a list of say 4 male and 4 female fitness instructors, this affects the style of movement and commentary.
(b) Commentary This adjusts the amount of encouragement and instruction given by the apparatus.
(c) Session Length/Calories Burned The user can choose either the length of bme or the amount of calories to be used up.
(d) Exercise Type This governs the complexity of the footwork and style of exercise; custom routines can be created (e) Music The user can choose a music track or tracks to workout to, which can effect the tempo of the session.
(f) Environment The user can select an on-screen visual to workout to, say on a beach, in a gym, or in a home, etc. (g) Statistics Graphs and reports are provided to give an opportunity to analyse workout information.
The user then physically performs the exercise on the step mat by emulating the routines of the on-screen fitness instructor, i.e. the instructor device.
Thus there is provided an interactive fitness game or regime where a user or player physically works out on a specialized mat. The workout is never the same, variable commentary and steps keep the experience fresh day after day. The mat acts as a controller, the users synchronizing their moves with the on-screen fitness instructor who concentrates on different areas of the body to one muscles, build stamina and increase fitness. Thus the apparatus provides the format and rewards of a fitness video with the stimulating and captivating qualities of a video game.
Unlike a workout video, apparatus embodying the invention is a fully customizable interactive tool, which encourages the user to push themselves beyond what they would usually achieve at home or in the gym.
The apparatus focuses on the three key elements of fitness: muscular strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness. The user chooses goals and favourite activities so as to be provided with the right instructor, type of exercise, and timeframe to obtain the results desired. The user can customise and create the steps to any song with relative ease. A fully customizable interactive fitness tool is provided.
A user instructor gets feedback from the mat about the user's condition and status and acts accordingly.
The apparatus defines the style of workout and encourages, guides and supports a user through a tough workout, warming their body up and working it down while recording every move and calorie burning step. Acting upon information received about a user's condition and timing via the step mat, if for example steps are being missed, a workout can be simplified.
