Abstract

244,825. Higman, H. P. L. Sept 23, 1924. Fusible cut-outs.-To extinguish or prevent the formation of arcs the fusible conductor is surrounded bv a substance which is normally inert but explodes by chemical reaction with the metallic vapour into which the conductor is converted on a heavy overload. Preferably the fuse consists of a copper wire which passes through a tube containing a mixture of finely divided lime with about 5 per cent of finely divided calcium carbide; one or two drops of water being added to provide a little free acetylene. When the fuse blows the copper vapour and calcium carbide provide the explosion, the lime serving to dissipate and cool the arc-forming metallic vapours. Such fuses are also suitable for ordinary overload protection, the copper then combining quietly with the carbide to form a high resistance tube. To increase the explosive action a little nitro-cellulose or similar explosive may be added to the mixture.
