Abstract

A method of applying and forming sealant in which the sealant is provided in a container 10 from which the sealant is applied as a bead (25, Fig 4), the container 10 having attached thereto a sealant contour forming tool 30, the method including separating the sealant contour forming tool 30 from the container 10, applying a bead 25 of sealant as shown in Fig 4, and using the separated sealant contour forming tool 30 independently of the container 10 to form a sealant bead to a desired contour. Preferably the container includes a peripheral wall, the sealant contour forming tool being attached by a frangible connection 32 to the one end of the peripheral wall and the method including separating the tool therefrom.

Description

Title: Method of Applying and Forming Sealant
Description of Invention
This invention relates to a method of applying and forming sealant.
In this specification by sealant" we include any flowable settable or non-settable material, such as mastic material, which is used for providing a seal.
More particularly but not exclusively the present invention relates to a method of applying sealant in the form of a bead, which subsequent to application is formed to a desired finished contour.
Sealant is used for one example, to provide a waterproof seal at a joint between for example a bath and a tiled wall. A bead of sealant is applied from a container which includes a piston, by inserting the container into an applicator gun, by means of which the piston of the container is pushed from one end of the container towards an opposite end where there is a nozzle from which the sealant is extruded, as the applicator gun and container are moved along the joint, thus to apply the bead. Subsequent to the bead being applied, the bead is smoothed using a smoothing tool, or not unusually, a wetted finger.
Smoothing tools have been proposed which are attached to the container to smooth the bead as it is extruded and the container and applicator gun are moved along the joint. These can be difficult to use, requiring a high level of skill. Also, to smooth beads to different contours e.g. to provide either a wide or a narrow smoothed bead, respective different smoothing tools are required to be fitted to the container. Wetted fingers and smoothing tools still tend to leave sealant spaced from the periphery of the bead which needs to be removed. * 2
According to one aspect of the present invention we provide a method of applying and forming sealant in which the sealant is provided in a container from which the sealant can be applied as a bead, the container having attached thereto a sealant contour forming tool, the method including separating the sealant contour forming tool from the container, applying a bead of sealant, and using the separated sealant contour forming tool independently of the container to form a sealant bead to a desired contour.
The present invention enables a sealant contour forming tool readily and inexpensively to be provided with the container.
Most desirably, the container includes a generally peripheral, preferably cylindrical, wall, the sealant contour forming tool being attached to the one end of the peripheral wall and being separable therefrom. For one example, the sealant contour forming tool may be attached to the one end of the peripheral wall by a frangible connection, and may, when separated by breaking the connection from the cylindrical peripheral wall, also be of cylindrical configuration.
Typically the peripheral wall of the container and the sealant contour forming tool are integrally made with a frangible connection between them, from a suitable plastics material.
Desirably the sealant contour forming tool when separated from the one end of the peripheral wall of the container is a closed loop e.g. annular, and the loop is sufficiently flexible to enable the tool to be deformed to a desired contour forming shape, for forming of the sealant bead.
Most desirably, the peripheral wall of the container is generally cylindrical, and the sealant contour forming tool when separated from the peripheral wall, is cylindrical. By deforming the cylindrical sealant contour forming tool e.g. to an * 3 ovoid shape, a curved edge of a desired curvature may be provided, which may be used e.g. by dragging along the bead of sealant, to remove excess sealant and to form and smooth the bead to a desired contour.
In a preferred embodiment, the container may include an internal piston which is moveable within the peripheral wall in a direction towards an opposite end of the container e.g. axially of the container where the container is elongate, to extrude sealant from the container to apply the bead.
Where the container is used by being received in an applicator gun which urges the piston in a direction from the one to the opposite end of the container to extrude the sealant bead, the sealant contour forming tool may need to be separated from the container prior to inserting the container into the applicator gun.
According to a second aspect of the invention we provide a container containing sealant and from which container the sealant can be applied as a bead, the container having a peripheral wall and attached to the peripheral wall, a sealant contour forming tool, the sealant contour forming tool being separable from the peripheral wall of the container and usable independently of the container to form a sealant bead to a desired contour.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-FIGURE 1 is an illustrative view of a sealant container and attached sealant contour forming tool, and separated nozzle; FIGURE 2 is an illustrative perspective view of the sealant contour forming tool just separated from the container of figure 1 and showing part of the figure 1 container in an inverted orientation; O 4 FIGURE 3 is an illustrative view of a bead of sealant as applied from the container of figure 1 prior to contour forming between two surfaces; FIGURE 4 is a view similar to figure 3, showing illustratively how the tool of figure 2 is used to form the bead of sealant as applied to a desired contour.
Referring to figure 1, a sealant container 10 is provided by a generally cylindrical peripheral waIl 12 which has at one end 13, an opening 14, the cylinder wall 12 being closed by a piston 15 (see figure 2) to retain the sealant within the container 10. At an opposite end 17 to the open end 13, a circular closure 19 is provided which includes a male threaded spigot 21 which is use provides a through opening 20 to the inside of the container 10. A nozzle 22 with an internal female thread 34 is secured to the spigot 21, and when the piston 15 is moved axially longitudinally of the peripheral wall 12 in a direction from the one end 13 towards the circular closure 19 at the opposite end 17, sealant is extruded from the nozzle 22.
Most typically, the container 10 will be received by an applicator gun (not shown) which includes a plunger which is operable under manual control, but may be powered by a motor or the like, to urge the piston 15 axially along the container 10 to extrude the sealant from the nozzle 22.
The sealant may be extruded from the container 10 as a bead 25 (see figure 3) e.g. at a joint 28 between two surfaces 26, 27, such as for examples only, a tiled wall and a bath, by moving the container 10 along the joint 28 as the sealant is extruded. However as will be appreciated, even with the use of a correctly sized nozzle 22, the bead 25 will be rough and not cosmetically or perhaps functionally as required, i.e. to form a seal e.g. a waterproof seal, between the two surfaces 26, 27. * 5
In accordance with the present invention, and as shown in figure 1, attached to the container 10 there is a sealant contour forming tool 30 which is separable from the container 10 and is useable independently of the container 10.
In the embodiment shown, the tool 30 is attached to the one end 13 of the peripheral wall 12 by a frangible connection 32. In the example, the peripheral wall 12 and the tool 30 are made integrally in a thin walled plastic material, the frangible connection 32 being provided by a weakened region such as a thinned or partially cut through circumferential line 33.
Thus when the tool 30 is separated from the one end 13 of the peripheral wall 12 by breaking the frangible connection 32, the tool 30 will be an axially short cylinder of material i.e. a closed loop which in this example is circular.
At least when separated from the peripheral wall 12, the tool 30 will be readily manually flexible and thus distortable to a desired sealant contour forming shape.
In figure 4 it can be seen that the tool 30 has been manually deformed to a an generally ovoid shape i.e. to provide a curved edge 29 with a desired curvature. By dragging the tool 30 along the rough applied bead 25 the bead may be smoothed and formed to a desired contour. The tool 30 does not require great skill to use and with a little care, dragging the tool 30 as illustrated in figure 4, with the tool 30 appropriately angled, excess sealant is removed as the desired sealant contour is formed, so that there is no excess sealant subsequently has to be removed.
It will be appreciated that in different circumstances, the bead 25 may be bigger or smaller than as shown, this being achieved by varying the size of an outlet 32 from the nozzle 22. For example, as indicated in figure 1, for a larger bead 25 to be extruded, the nozzle 22 may be cut along a tine 33. The sealant * 6 contour forming tool 30 may still be used to form and smooth the bead 25 to a desired contour, by varying the distortion of the tool 30 i.e. to deform the cylinder to provide a curved edge 29 of a greater curvature than shown in figure 4. Where a narrower bead 25 than as shown in figure 2 is to be smoothed, the toot 30 may be distorted to provide a curved edge 29 with a smatter curvature than shown in figure 4.
Various modifications are possible without departing from the scope of the invention. 1o
For example, the container 10 need not be cylindrical and include a cylindrical peripheral wall 12, but the invention may be applied to a container of another configuration, although preferably the container 10 is elongate and the sealant contour forming tool 30 is attached at one end of a peripheral wall 12.
In another example though, the tool 30 may be attached otherwise than by the frangible connection 32 described. For example, the tool 30 may be received around the peripheral wall 12 and be separable from the container 10 for use.
It may require to be separated by using a tool such as a knife. It may be manufactured separately and subsequently attached to the container.
Although it is preferred for the sealant contour forming tool 30 to be a closed loop, the tool 30 need not be a closed loop when separated from the container provided that the toot 30 can be deformed to provide a curved edge of a desired curvature for smoothing and forming the desired contour of the bead 25.
Although the described contour forming tool is of uniform depth in the direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the container 10, separated from the container at a plane perpendicular to that axis, it would be possible for it to be of non-uniform depth, separated along a line which lies in a plane inclined to * 7 the axis or not lying in a plane at all. Such shaping of an edge part or parts of the tool may facilitate the formation of the bead to a desired contour.
Possibly, more than one tool, of the same or different size or shape from each other, could be provided.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately, or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof. * 8

Claims (18)

1. A method of applying and forming sealant in which the sealant is provided in a container from which the sealant can applied as a bead, the container having attached thereto a sealant contour forming tool, the method including separating the sealant contour forming tool from the container, applying a bead of sealant, and using the separated sealant contour forming tool independently of the container to form a sealant bead to a desired contour.
2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the container includes a peripheral wall, the sealant contour forming tool being attached to the one end of the peripheral wall and the method including separating the tool therefrom.
3. A method according to claim 2 wherein the sealant contour forming tool is attached to the one end of the peripheral wall by a frangible connection, the method including breaking the frangible connection to separate the tool from the container.
4. A method according to claim 3 wherein the peripheral wall of the container and the sealant contour forming tool are integrally made with a frangible connection between them, from a suitable plastics material.
5. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the peripheral wall of the container is generally cylindrical.
6. A method according to claim 5 where dependent upon claim 2, wherein the sealant contour forming tool when separated from the cylindrical peripheral wall is of cylindrical configuration. * 9
7. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the sealant contour forming tool when separated from the container is sufficiently flexible to enable the tool to be deformed to a desired contour forming shape, for forming of the sealant bead to the desired contour.
8. A method according to claim 7 wherein the sealant contour forming tool when separated from the container is a closed loop.
9. A method according to claim 8 wherein the closed loop is deformed to a generally ovoid shape for use in forming the sealant contour.

A method according to claim 8 or claim 9 where dependent upon claim 6 wherein the sealant contour forming tool is deformed, when separated from the container, to provide a curved edge of a desired curvature, and is used by dragging along the bead of sealant, to remove excess sealant and form and smooth the bead to the desired contour.
11. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the container includes an internal piston and the method includes moving the piston within the peripheral wall in a direction towards an opposite end of the container to extrude sealant from the container to apply the bead.
12. A method according to claim 11 wherein the container is elongate and the method includes moving the piston axially of the container.
13. A method according to claim 11 or claim 12 wherein the method includes receiving the container in an applicator gun, and operating the gun to urge the piston in a direction from the one to the opposite end of the container to extrude the sealant bead. * 10
14. A method according to claim 13 which includes separating the sealant contour forming tool from the container prior to inserting the container into the applicator gun.
15. A method of applying and forming sealant substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
16. A combination of a container containing sealant and from which container the sealant can be applied as a bead, and a sealant contour forming tool, the container having a peripheral wall and attached to the peripheral wall, the sealant contour forming tool, the sealant contour forming tool being separable from the peripheral wall of the container and usable independently of the container to form a sealant bead to a desired contour.
17. A combination of a container and a sealant forming tool substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and/or as shown in the accompanying drawings.
18. Any novel feature or novel combination of features described herein and/or as shown in the accompanying drawings.
