Abstract
244,405. Emmel, K., and Thyssen & Co., Akt.-Ges. Dec. 9, 1924, [Convention date]. Purifying and refining. - Iron castings of low carbon content are produced in a cupola furnace worked with solid fuel by smelting of a mixture of 50 per cent or more of iron low in carbon (steel or wrought iron) and iron richer in carbon (pig or brittle iron), with the usual additions for producing grey cast iron and coke amounting to 9-13 per cent of the total charge and submitting the charge to a blast of 400-800 mm. water gauge pressure, according to whether the carbon content of the product is to be nearer 2 or 3 per cent. Part or the whole of the iron low in carbon may be in the form of small pieces which are briquetted before use. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), it is stated that the charge may comprise iron low in carbon alone, and that the amount of the carbon in the product is determined by regulating the amount of the blast or the pressure either by throttling the gases escaping from the furnace or by automatic pressure-reducing or regulating valves fitted to the blast pipe. The valves may be adjustable. This subject matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
