Abstract

A dispensing mechanism, preferably part of a container such as a vial for storing test strips, includes an ejector 2 having a step which goes beyond the strip backstop to collect a strip. When the cover 8 is pivoted about a first pivot the ejector carries the test strip 5 a short distance (see figure 1). After a predetermined amount of arc of the top pivot, the cover is automatically transferred to the second pivot, and when the cover 8 is rotated about the second pivot the ejector 2 carries the strip 5 a longer distance until it projects beyond the exit of the container 1 (see figure 2). A user can extract a single strip manually or by placing a test meter directly onto the strip.

Description

I
Title: A Dispensing Mechanism
Background.
This invention relates to a dispensing mechanism that dispenses objects from a container that has a cover. An example of this would be test strips that are housed in a vial with a lid.
When test strips are required to be removed from a vial for use, the user has to place a finger into the vial to remove a strip, or decant the strips to collect one. The strip is then manually placed into a meter. During this process the strips can be contaminated or damaged or more than the required amount can be removed and then they have to be replaced back into the vial.
Statement of Invention
To overcome this, the present invention proposes a dispensing mechanism that allows the strips to be placed directly into a container, which is then closed and sealed during the normal manufcturing process. When the container cover is opened, a strip is brought beyond the opening of the container in a one-piece action, for easy removal.
Description of the Invention
The dispensing mechanism allows the user to extract a strip without running the risk of contaminating or damaging the other strips in the container. This is accomplished by a double pivot mechanism for example a double hinge. The double hinge allows the container to be manufactured to a handle-able size. Also the dispensing mechanism contains a dispenser for example an ejector incorporating a step. The ejector only travels a short distance into the vial to go beyond the strip backstop to collect a strip, this is due to the first pivot on the pivot mechanism being close to the ejector. For ejection the second pivot of the pivot mechanism works on a larger arc (being further away from the ejector). This makes for increased travel of the ejector, which in turn increases the distance a strip is moved allowing it to be collected by the user. An example of this would be that in the first 90 degrees that the cover opens the test strip and ejector move 5 millimetres and on the second 90 degrees of the cover opening, the test strip and ejector move an additional 12 millimetres. These dimensions and degrees of angle are for illustration purposes.
In one embodiment of the dispensing mechanism, the pivot mechanism is mechanically attached to both the cover and the container, the ejector is mechanically attached to the cover. An urging means for example a spring, is mechanically attached to the container. A moisture absorber for example desiccant and a portal for example a gate are also attached to the container. When closed the container and cover are hermetically sealed.
Preferably the container and cover are sealed around their perimeter In another embodiment the container and cover are sealed around the dispenser.
Preferably the portal is hermetically sealed into the container, and the cover seals around the portal when closed In another embodiment the pivot mechanism is an integral part of the container and the ejector is an integral part of the cover.
In another embodiment the container, cover, ejector and the pivot mechanism are all integral and moulded as one.
Preferably the moisture absorber is moulded into the base of the container.
In another embodiment the moisture absorber is moulded around the internal walls of the container.
Preferably the urging means is a flat, moulded plastic spring, or made from ferrous or non-ferrous material.
In another embodiment the urging means is a torsion spring in plastic, ferrous or non-ferrous material.
In another embodiment the urging means is a constant force spring.
Preferably the portal is transparent to allow the user to view the remaining strips.
In another embodiment the urging means and the portal arc an integral part and fitted as one.
Preferably the dispenser has a step to pull the strip out of the vial.
In another embodiment the dispenser has a pin attached to pull out the strip.
In another embodiment the dispenser has a hook attached to pull out the strip.
Advantages The dispensing mechanism will allow strips to be placed directly into a container during normal manufacture and make sure that the strips are brought beyond the top of the container for collection.
The pivot mechanism and dispenser will allow the strips to travel a short distance as the cover opens, this helps limit the size of the vial. On the continued opening of the cover the ejector moves in a larger arc, this allows the leading edge of the strips to be brought further out of the container, making it easy for the user to access and remove the strips.
The risk of contamination and possible damage to the remaining strips will be significantly reduced.
Easier for the user to work with the strips.
A more hygienic solution.
The mechanism can be lengthened or shortened to suit various lengths of test strip Preferably, the mechanism will place the strip in a position that it can be placed directly into a meter without handling the strip.
introduction to drawings
Detailed description
Figure 1 A container cover (8), which seals the container, (1) is attached at the opening of the container, by way of a double pivot. (7). Attached to the container cover is a dispenser, (2) which dispenses the strip. At the bottom of the container is a backstop (3) this allows the dispenser to go beyond the strip as the cover closes, to enable it to collect the next strip. Near the top of the container is a portal (6) this, in combination th the dispenser determines the number of strips that are dispensed. Inside the container is an urging means (4), which contains the Strips (5) and urges them onto the dispenser.
Figure 2 When the cover (8) is opened the dispensing mechanism ensures the dispenser (2) moves towards the opening of the container (1) bringing a strip (5) to the opening.
(Note, only the top pivot (7) has operated). During the first part of the arc that the cover completes on opening, the dispenser will move a short distance bringing the strip to the entrance of the container.
Figure 3 On the continued opening of the cover (8) the dispenser (2) moves in a larger arc, (note, the second or lower pivot (7) has taken over) the dispenser (2) then moves a larger distance allowing a strip (5) to move further on the second part of its travel and exit the container.
