Abstract

The marine engine anti-freeze jacket 1 and the stem drive anti-freeze jacket 2 are insulated, waterproof and heated. The jackets fit around the engine and stem drive to protect them from damage that can be caused by freezing temperatures. The insulating effect of the jackets may be provided by an insulating fabric or material. The heating within the jackets may be provided by an electric power source triggered by a thermostat 3, to heat a wire or element within the jackets.

Description

Marine engine and stern drive anti-freeze Jacket.
During the cold winter months boat owners are faced with the task of ensuring their engines and outdrives are protected from serious damage that can be caused by freezing temperatures. Typical damage that can occur Is cracking to the engine block or stem drive housing.
Many boat owners protect against this by performing what is known as winterisation. This is normally performed by a qualified mechanic and once done would render the craft unusable until commissioned again (usually when the warmer months arrive).
For boat owners that wish to continue to use their craft throughout the whole year, the wintensation process is not an option. As winterisation is a time consuming and expensive procedure that wouldn't be practical to be performed after each time the craft was used.
However, for boat owners wishing to use their craft during the cold winter months the risks of serious mechanical damage would still be a problem.
For example, If a boat was used once every 3 weeks during the winter months and when not being used was parked up on a trailer, then conventional mechanical winterlsatlon would not be recommended. But during the period the boat is not being used, freezing temperatures could set in and damage the engine or stem drive.
To overcome these problems, this invention consists of a jacket to cover the engine and a jacket to cover the stem drive. These jackets are insulated and waterproof. The Invention Indudes an electrically heated version which features a frost thermostat and plug to connect to a domestic power supply. When temperatures dropped the thermostat would switch on and the jacket would become heated to protect against freezing.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 and figure 2 show the engine and stern drive anti-freeze jackets (side view). FIgure 1 shows the engine and stem drive under the jackets. Figure 2 shows the engine and stern drive hidden by the jackets fitted to them.
In figure 1, the engine anti-freeze jacket 1 is shown around the engine 10. There is a fastening strip 6 on each side to secure the jacket ensure a snug fit. Also In figure 1, the stern drive anti-freeze Jacket 2 is shown around the stem drive 7. Again there is a fastening strip 8 on each side to secure the jacket and ensure a snug fit.
The electrically heated version of the jackets will Include a mains electric plug 5, connected via an electric cable 4 to a frost sensing thermostat 3. The cable will then be connected to a heating element or wire within the jackets material. -3-.
