Description

2441763
1
Building Block
The present invention relates to building blocks and in particular, but 5 not exclusively, to building blocks for forming temporary walls.
Embodiments of the invention provide a building block which comprises a connection formation for use in releasably connecting lifting means to the block, during use, to enable the lifting means to lift the block.
10
The connection formation may be embedded in the block. The connection formation may be attached to a retaining member to retain the connection formation in the block. The retaining member may extend within the block, to either side of the connection formation. The retaining member 15 may be a plate.
The connection formation may include a first threaded member which may be internally threaded and may be a tubular member for receiving an externally threaded member for connection therewith. The block may 20 comprise a second threaded member for engaging the first threaded member, and having an eye for connection with the lifting means. The second threaded member may be externally threaded.
The block may have engaging formations for engaging corresponding 25 formations of another like block, during construction. The block may be made of a settable material such as a cementitious material, such as concrete.
Embodiments of the invention also provide a method of forming a building block in which a connection formation is incorporated in the block 30 being formed, for use in releasably connecting lifting means to the formed block.
2
The connection formation may be embedded in the block. The connection formation may be attached to a retaining member to retain the connection formation in the block. The retaining member may be positioned 5 to extend within the block, to either side of the connection formation. The retaining member may be a plate.
The connection member is preferably a threaded member which may be internally threaded, and may be a tubular member.
10
The block is preferably formed by moulding a settable material. The connection formation is preferably supported in a mould, prior to introduction of settable material, to be embedded in the block, when the mould is filled. The connection formation may be releasably connected with a complementary 15 formation for support by the mould, prior to mould filling. The complementary formation may be a member introduced through a wall of the mould, to engage and support the connection formation, prior to mould filling.
Embodiments of the invention also provide a mould for forming a 20 building block from settable material, having a mould cavity, a support formation for releasably supporting a connection formation in the mould cavity, to cause the connection formation to be embedded in the settable material, the connection formation being for releasable connection with lifting means.
25
The support formation may be operable to support the connection formation prior to the mould being filled. The support formation may comprise an aperture in a mould wall, and a support member extending through the aperture to engage the connection formation. The support member may be 30 elongate and may be threaded and may be arranged to be withdrawn when the settable material has set.
3
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
5
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are, respectively, plan, side elevation and end elevation views of a building block in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a connection arrangement for use in the 10 block of Figs. 1 to 3;
Fig. 5 is a partial side elevation showing the completed block being lifted, in use;
15 Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a mould for use in forming the building block of Figs. 1 to 3; and
Fig. 7 is a partial vertical section at the line 7-7 of Fig. 6, during the moulding process.
20
Fig. 1 shows a building block 10. The block 10 is generally rectangular in plan (Fig. 1). The upper face 12 has an array of pyramid projections 14. The lower face 16 has a corresponding array of pyramid-shaped recesses 18, complementary to the shape of the pyramids 14. Accordingly, two blocks of 25 identical design can be interfitted by sitting one over the other, so that at least one of the pyramids 14 of the lower block is received in a recess 18 of the upper block, thus resisting relative lateral movement between the two blocks.
In one example, the block 10 is made of a settable material such as a 30 cementitious material, which may be concrete. A typical size may be in the region of 160 mm x 800 mm (in plan) and a height of 400 mm. A block 10 of these dimensions is expected to be useful for interfitting on a temporary or
4
semi-permanent basis to form reconfigurable storage bays (e.g. for sand, gravel or other particulate material), temporary barricades, safety barriers, retaining walls, silage clamps etc. The weight of a block of the dimensions 5 just described, together with the interfitting features provided by the pyramids 14 and recesses 18, allows these blocks to be assembled together with adequate strength and security for these temporary construction purposes. However, the weight will require lifting equipment when a wall of blocks is to be disassembled or re-arranged. For example, the weight of a block 10 may 10 be approximately 1 tonne.
In embodiments of the invention, the block 10 is provided with a connection formation 20 for use in releasably connecting lifting means 22 (Fig. 5) to the block 10. This allows the block 10 to be lifted, during use.
15
In this example, the connection formation 20 is embedded in the block and is attached to a retaining member 24 to retain the connection formation 20 in the block. The retaining member 24 is a plate which extends to either side of the connection formation 20, within the block 10. The connection 20 formation 20 is a threaded member in this example, being an internally threaded tubular member. Accordingly, the connection formation 20 can receive a complementary externally threaded member 26 for connection between the member 26 and the formation 20. In this example, the second threaded member 26 has an eye 28 for connection with lifting means 22, such 25 as a hook 30 and chain 32.
It will therefore be understood from this description that a block 10 can be lifted safely by first threading a second member 26 into the connection formation 20, embedded within the block 10, so that the eye 28 is proud of the 30 upper face 12 of the block 10. The lifting means 22 then hooks onto the eye 28, to allow the block 10 to be lifted into or out of position. This allows the block 10 to be handled safely by appropriate lifting means such as a crane or
5
chain hoist. Once in position, the lifting means 22 can be disconnected from the eye 28 and the second threaded member 26 removed by unscrewing from the connection formation 20. This leaves the connection formation 20 5 embedded within the block 10, but the eye 28 no longer obstructs the upper face 12, so that another block 10 can be placed on top, if required. Furthermore, cost can be reduced by allowing the second threaded member 26 to be used with more than one block 10.
10 A block of the type described above can be formed in a moulding operation, using a mould 34 (Fig. 6). The mould 34 has a mould cavity 36 consisting of four walls 38, a floor 40 and an upper mouth 42. Projections 44 and recesses 46 in side walls 38 result in the formation of pyramids 14 and recesses 18 in the moulded block.
15
At one position on the wall 38 corresponding with the upper face 12 of the block 10 being formed, the mould 34 has an aperture 48 (Fig. 7). The aperture 48 can receive a bolt 50, as shown, the bolt extending through the aperture 48 from outside the mould cavity 36. Within the cavity 36, the bolt 50 20 threadedly connects with the connection formation 20. Tightening the bolt 50 draws the connection formation 20 to the wall 38, thus sealing the aperture 48 against leakage from the cavity 36, and holding the connection formation 20 in position at the edge of the cavity 36.
25 Settable material can now be introduced into the cavity 36, filling the cavity 36 above the level of the connection formation 20. Once the settable material has set, the bolt 50 can be released from the connection formation 20, which is now embedded within the set material forming the block 10, to be flush with the face forming the upper face 12 of the block 10. The plate 24 will 30 retain the connection formation 20 in this position within the block 10. The block 10, after removal from the mould 34, can then be used in the manner which has been described above.
6
Many variations and modifications can be envisaged in relation to the examples described above, particularly in relation to the dimensions and relative dimensions, the form of the interfitting formations on the block 10, the 5 form of the connection formation and second member 26.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any 10 patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
