Abstract

A solar heat engine comprises a solar heat collector, a radiator, an insulator, and a turbine driving a compressor. The solar heat collector comprises a thin walled copper tube AB and the radiator comprises a thin walled copper tube CD. Each of the tubes includes a number of heating or cooling fins made from thin copper sheet. An insulator is provided between the solar heat collector and the radiator so as to place the radiator's cooling fins in a region of shadow or shade. A working fluid, such as ammonia gas, is heated in the solar heat collector between points A and B. The warmed working fluid then passes through the turbine (B-C, fig.2) and into the radiator where low grade heat is rejected between points C and D. The cooled working fluid then passes through the compressor (D-A, fig.2) before returning to the solar heat collector at point A. In operation, the solar heat collector is heated by the sun as it arcs overhead during the day whilst the radiator's shaded cooling fins dissipate heat to the air. Power may be taken from the turbine to drive machinery or to generate electricity.

Description

Solar Heat Engine The Pipes AA, BB, CC, DD are not shown.

The tube AB is a thin walled copper tube as is the tube CD.

The heating fins are powered by the sun as it arcs overhead for the day and the cooling fins in the shsde vent the heat to the sky near the horizon. Fins are thin copper sheet.

The whittle engine has a high flow, so quite large size compression turbine driven by the driving turbine which is bigger.

The energy comes from the heat of the sun applied to the working fluid between A and B then the low grsde hest being radiated duting the fluids passage through C D. Whittle Engine Power may be taken from the turbine to drive machinery or generate electricity.

Supports and housing not shown Working fluid ammonia gas
