Abstract

Mercury interrupters.-In a jet-wave commutator or interrupter which may be used for rectifying alternating current as described in Specification 102,977, the current is led into or out of the jet-wave by one or more auxiliary electrodes each consisting of a conducting wall arranged substantially in the direction of movement of the liquid particles for a distance of at least half a wave-length and arranged perpendicular to the plane of the wave. Fig. 2 show& one such auxiliary electrode E<1> the top edge of which cuts the jet-wave. In the position shown in full lines, current can pass from the electrode E<1> to the main electrode E1 through the portion a, b of the jet. wave. In the dotted-line position, auxiliaty and main electrodes E<1>, E2 are connected by the portion c, d of the wave. According to a modification the electrode E<1> may be wedge-shaped and Fig. 5 shows two such wedgeelectrodes E<1>1 and E<1>2 co-operating with divided electrodes E1, e1 and E2, e2.
