Abstract

A "Motor Vehicle Fuel Type Reminder" 3 to prevent incorrect fuelling of a vehicle comprises an adapter of which can be retrofitted to a motor vehicle, offering a solution to incorrect refuelling. When the adapter is installed, on removal of the fuel filler cap 1 a flap springs into position covering the intake bore of the fuel filler neck 2. The flap is inscribed with a message that prompts the person refuelling to check the fuel type being used and so attempts to prevent the fuel tank from being filled with the wrong fuel. Before refuelling commences the person refuelling has to momentarily adjust the adapter so that the fuel filler nozzle of the fuel pump can be inserted, the device therefore physically reminds the person refuelling to check the fuel type. On removal of the fuel filler nozzle the adapter returns to the same position as if the fuel cap was removed, meaning that the person refuelling has to again momentarily manually adjust the adapter to refit the fuel filler cap. If at this stage wrong fuel had been added by mistake the reminder could bring this to the person's attention if the reminder had not already been acknowledged.

<p>Background:</p>
<p>This invention relates to incorrect refuelling of a motor vehicle.</p>
<p>Statement of invention:</p>
<p>When a driver refuels their vehicle, it is possible for them to inadvertently refuel the vehicle with the wrong type of fuel by using the wrong fuel pump nozzle. This can result in possible damage and high cost for repair.</p>
<p>To overcome this issue the "Motor Vehicle Fuel Type Reminder" offers a physical interruption to the accustomed refuelling procedure by means of a sprung-loaded flap with warning inscription that covers the intake bore of the filler neck once the fuel cap is removed.</p>
<p>The person refuelling has to intervene momentarily to adjust the fuel reminder so that the fuel filler nozzle of the fuel pump can be inserted. This action prompts a further fuel type check.</p>
<p>Advantages: -The invention can be easily retrofitted -The invention can be easily manufactured and adapted to various vehicles -The invention offers two prompts reminding the person refuelling to check the fuel type within one refuelling session. This provides not only prevention toward incorrect fuelling but also prevention against driving the vehicle with any incorrect fuel</p>

<p>Detailed description:</p>
<p>Figure's 1/7, 2/7 and 3/7 are made available to provide clarity within figures 4/7, 5/7, 6/7 and 7/7.</p>
<p>Figure 4/7 shows the fuel type reminder (3) fixed and held in place by an adjustable fixture (3A) to the filler neck (2). This location position of (3) permits the inscribed flap arm (3B) to rest against the fuel cap (1) on the vertical shoulder of the fuel cap (1A), this is best illustrated in figure 6/7.</p>
<p>When the fuel cap (1) is removed from the filler neck (2) the inscribed flap arm (3B) which is sprung-loaded with potential energy springs into the defined position illustrated by (3B) figure 5/7.</p>
<p>At this point the fuel filler nozzle of the fuel pump cannot be inserted into the fuel intake bore (4) without the person refuelling, manually twisting the inscribed flap arm (3B) by adjuster (5), which is flexibly mounted by (6) shown in figure 7/7.</p>
<p>This interruption of the accustomed refuelling procedure requires the person refuelling to intervene and may prompt them to read the inscription on the flap arm (3B) of which can be inscribed with: "Diesel only" I "Petrol only" or "Check fuel type".</p>
<p>After refuelling has been completed and when the fuel filler nozzle is removed the inscribed flap arm (3B) springs back to it's defined position shown in figure 5/7 which is its rest position, again covering the fuel filler neck intake bore (4).</p>
<p>The person refuelling then has to once again manually twist the inscribed flap arm (3B) by adjuster (5). A second prompt at this stage provided by this action carried out may prevent the driver from using the vehicle with any incorrect fuel thus preventing any major damage.</p>

    neck of a motor vehicle or commercial vehicle working as a fuel type reminder 2) An adapter according to claim (1) that is fitted with moving parts of which move to a defined position when the fuel cap is removed 3) An adapter according to claim (2) which has moving parts that cover the intake bore of the fuel filler neck preventing refuelling via the fuel pump nozzle</p>
