Cheques, drafts, and the like.-A tinted safety background for cheques, bank-notes, drafts, bonds, stock certificates, &c. comprises a multiplicity of independent parallel lines forming a series of bands of two or more successively blending and contrasting colours. Lines of graduated width may contact to form composite lines of uniform width, and an inserted legend or emblem may be formed at repeated intervals by continuation of the lines in contrasting colours, or by independent lines. The background may be produced in a flat or cylinder press; in the latter, rolls 13, 13', Fig. 2, lined circumferentially from end to end with straight or curved parallel lines, are inked by rolls 11, 11<1>, 12, 12<1>. The rolls 11, 11<1> may carry red and blue ink respectively and have depressions to form non-inking areas corresponding to the inserted design, whilst the rolls 12, 12<1> carry green ink and are raised at the parts corresponding to the design to ink the rolls 13, 13<1> only at these parts. The rolls 13, 13' may print directly on the paper or parchment of the document, or may transfer the coloured lines to an offsetting-roll 14 printing on the document 10. The lines on the rolls 13, 13<1> vary in width and are so arranged that, on the roll 14 and the document 10, the corresponding lines 17, 18, Fig. 5, are adjacent and together form composite lines of uniform width, with certain lines changing to green at parts forming the inserted design 16, and with the proportion of red 17 to blue 18 in each composite line varying from line to line continuously and repeatedly by equal fractions between wholly red and wholly blue.
