Abstract

243,679. Thiry, L. Nov. 25, 1924, [Convention date]. Chain, axle, and like distance members or adjusters and radius rods.-A flexible or elastic material such as rubber is interposed as a bushing between a pivot secured to one part and a socket surrounding the pivot and secured to the other part, the bushing being free at its ends and having its radial dimensions so reduced by compression between the pivot and the socket that it adheres to both members whilst allowing for an angular movement. These results are obtained by the bushing material being considerably drawn out by the insertion of its mass between walls which are of a less distance apart than the thickness of the material in its initial state. The application to the pivotal joints of the steering members and the thrust and cardan shafts of motor vehicles is referred to. P is the socket member secured to the eye of a suspension spring, and Q is a tubular pivot connected to a pair of spring shackles. Between these members an elastic material such as rubber, originally occupying the volume AA, BB, CC, DD, is stretched in an axial direction by compression so as to occupy the volume aa, bb, cc, dd. One of the members of the joint, for example a shaft, may be permitted to make small transverse movements. The length M,M of the central tube is longer than that, N, N, of the outer tube in order that certain axial forces may be permitted. The intermediate bushing may be of the general shape of rectangular section, or frusto-conical or double frusto-conical in longitudinal section. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), states also that the adherence of the bushing to the joint members may be effected by means of a rubber solution, which may be vulcanized, the pivot and socket members P, Q may have longitudinal or other channels, and may have annular grooves to resist axial thrust. Two or more concentric joints may be arranged in series. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
