Abstract
A flame retardant barrier for a wall comprises a fire retardant wall covering applied to a substrate using a fire retardant adhesive. A fire retardant coating is applied to the outer surface of the wall covering. The wallcovering may be made from natural materials such as quartz, soda, lime and dolomite that resist parasite attack. The adhesive may comprise a water-based dispersion of starch, vinyl acetate, ethylene copolymer and a flame retardant. Subsequent to the application of the fire retardant coating, a water-based paint may be applied.
Description

FIRE RETARDANT BARRIER

The present invention relates to fire retardant barrier.

It has long been important to continue to find more efficient ways to provide fire proofing to walls of buildings. The present invention seeks to provide a barrier in the form of a wallcovering that has fire retardant properties.

According to a first aspect there is provided, a flame retardant barrier for inter a/ia a wall, the barrier comprising a fire retardant walicovering material applied to a chosen substrate using an fire retardant adhesive, the outer surface of the wallcovering having a fire-retardant S...

coating applied thereto.

IS

Preferably, the adhesive comprises a water based dispersion of *:*. starch, vinyl acetate, ethylene copolymer and a flame retardant.

The barrier is generally made of three components.

The first component comprises an adhesive that is applied to a chosen substrate. The adhesive comprises a water based dispersion of starch, vinyl acetate, ethylene copolymer and flame retardant. The adhesive composition further includes additives for stability, and preservatives.

Such an adhesive is classified as non-hazardous and essentially non-toxic. Furthermore, as the adhesive is formed as an aqueous dispersion, the adhesive is essentially non-flammable.

The adhesive is applied to the substrate using, for example, a brush or roller.

The second component is a wailcovering material that is applied over the adhesive. The wallcovering may be decorative. A suitable wallcovering is one marketed under the GLASSTEX range by Eclipse Wailcoverings in the UK.

Glasstex wallcoverings meet the most stringent international walicovering fire regulation and play an important role in fire safety by preventing spread of flame on the surface of most conventional building materials. * * * S..

*::::* The wallcovering and adhesive can be applied to a substrate of any material, for example concrete, plastered masonry, gypsum board or S...

: wood-chip board. In older buildings with different surfaces, Glasstex walicoverings achieve structural and colour uniformity of all areas.

Glasstex wallcoverings cover cracks in the wall, and generally adds strength to any surface it is applied to * hard-wearing, healthy and safe, ideal for hygiene applications.

The walicovering is made from natural non toxic materials such as quartz and, soda, lime and dolomite and so do not provide a breeding ground for parasites such as mites.

Furthermore, there is practically no build up of static electricity so several key causes of allergies are radically reduced. The open-pore textile structure encourages natural moisture vapour diffusion, helping to ensure a healthy room climate.

The third component is a base coat that is applied to the wallcovering.

The coating comprises a plurality of different constituents, the combination of which, numerous experiments by the applicant have shown, provides a coating which provides an effective barrier in the event of a fire.

The composition of the coat generally includes a blowing agent (for example melamine), a charring agent (for example pentaerythritol), a flame retardant component (for example Exolit App 422 dispersed in water), a plasticising agent (such as chloraparaffin 521), a pigment (for example titanium dioxide R003), a defoaming agent such as a parafinic liquid/mineral oil (for example Octafoam), a biocide (for example acticide CH9636), a phosphate (for example surfac K18), methyl ethyl glycol (MEG), a dispersing agent to disperse the pigment (for example eccodis 80), an acrylic associative thickener (for example Rheovis 132, in liquid : form) and a vinyl acetate dispersion/vovea copolymer (for example emultex 523). * ** * S S

A coat of water-based paint of any chosen colour can then be applied * to the barrier.

Application of the barrier upgrades Warringtonfires "Class 4" multi-layer paint substrate" to comply with class "0" which is becoming increasingly required in the building construction industry.

The combination of the adhesive, wallcovering and base coat provide a barrier that has been proven to fulfil fire test criteria that is far more stringent than any other similar fire retardant barriers.

In particular, a barrier of the present invention was applied to a Warringtonfire standardised multi-layer painted board and tested at Warringtonfire in accordance with BS 476. .Part 6 (fire propagation) and BS 476..Part 7 (surface spread of flame) and the test results complied with the requirements for a class "0" rating as defined in paragraph A13(b) of Approved Document B (fire safety) to the Building Regulations 2000.

The above described embodiment is given by way of example only, and the skilled reader will naturally appreciate that many variations could be made thereto without departing from the scope of the present invention. *. * * * *** I.. S * S S... S...
