Abstract

A fence or barrier 2 adapted to sit on the ground has a hollow watertight base portion 4 so that site applied water holds the barrier in position: fill and drain apertures 5 and 6 may be provided. In alternative forms, (drawing 2, Figs 1 and 3, not shown) the water may be placed in either an open-topped dish, or adjacent modules may combine to produce an elongate trough which is filled with water.

Description

Relocatable/reusable barriers or fencing In UK Patent GB 2 363 402 B
the principle of a form of fence or harrier that does not penetrate the ground, but relies on site applied ballast for stability is established, The improvements herein described are to create a lighter form offence/barrier that can he man handled, made of materials such as recycled plastics, glass fibre, polystyrene 01' similar, and that utilise site applied water as the ballast to stabalise arid hold the barier fence in position.

Steel mesh barriers are currently used for crowd control harriers. These are not very stable and can cause injury if they topple over, It is envisaged that the improvements herein described will provide flat, smooth and curved surfaces against a crowd and are thus much less likely to cause injury it is envisaged that these improvements will he particularly appropriate where enclosure (visual or physical, or both) is required which is close to human contact such as around school playgrounds, around and in between sporting activities as well as for crowd control They would have the added advanlage of acting as suitable advertising hoardings It is also envisaged that these improvements, utilising a suitable impact resistant material and maybe some fhrm of inhuilt or attached crash barrier, Inay be useful for traffic control barriers.

A preferred embodiment of the fence is herein described and illustrated on drawing No I figs 1,2&3 The base portion of the fence module moulded from materials aforementioned is of curved or triangular hollow watertight form It may he continuous along the base of the fence module or intermittent as illustrated in fig 2, dependent on the applied water weight required The upstanding portion 2 of the fence module may he integrally formed with the base port jon or the base portion may embody hle 01' SlotS 3 as illustrated on drawing No I fig 3 into which posts can he inserted to hold up an upstanding portion of different materials, timber panels, steel or timber railings, picket fencing etc. The abutting ends of the base portion and the upstanding portion would embody an interlocking or tounge and grooved arrangement 4 to hold the fence in line and together Water filled caps 5 would he situated along the topside of the base portion as appropriate Drainage caps or taps 6 could be located at the bottom of the abutting ends of the base module to provide security To overcome the problem of any damage being caused by the water ballast freezing the water holding compartment could be tapered outwards and upwards as illustrated on drawing No 1 fig 4 or alternatively antifreeze may he added to the water.

Site applied waler is indicated by dot/dash lines in all figs For crowd control harriers that need to be erected and removed qwckly there is a need to apply and remove the water ballast quickly Drawing No 2 figs I illustrates a crowd control harrier wherein the base portion consist largely of an open tray or as in drawing No 2 fig 2 where the top othe base portion is dished. This would enable a water tanker or tender to drive alongside the harrier and pour water into the base quickly. To remove the water quickly either plugs could he pulled or to save water and avoid a quagmire the water tanker, similar to tankers employed to clear out road gullys etc could drive along and suck the water out of the open trays or out of the Lop openings of the dished trays Another improvement to apply the water ballast quickly and conveniently would he to provide a form olcontinuous gutter along the top of the base section This is illustrated on drawing No 2 fig 3 The top of the base section would embody a recessed gutter or gully 7 with a hole or holes 8 to let the water run into the base portion When one base portion was full the water would decent to ajoining base portion via a gutter spout 9 overlapping and intersecting between the ends of the base portions. The harriers would he arranged either on flat ground or with the gutter spouts downwards on slopping ground and long lengths of barrier could he filled by applying a fire hose or similar at the higher levels Drawin No 2 fig4& 11lustate a traffic control barrjer Stiong horizontal ribs 10 would provide impact resistance or metal crash barriers 11 may he attached to the sides of the harriers There is a need to be able, particularly in quickly erecting long crowd control harriers to get as many harriers on a lorry as possible It is envisaged that these harriers would he inter stackable as illustrated in one form (in drawing No 2 fig 6 Where stiffening braces are required between the base portion and the upstanding portion these braces would he tapered and hollow to enable them to interlock when stacked.

To improve friction between the barriers and the ground surface, on tarmac, pavements etc the underneath surface of the base portion would be of an abrasive nature and for use on grass, soil, loose gravel etc pimpled, studded or spiked In all embodiments the water holding base portion may be compartmental ised, with water retained in but able to flow over and between conipartrnents, to help stahalise the water and prevent it sloshing about and provided an even distribution of water ballast in the base portion, especially on sloping ground

Claims (2)

  1.
Claims 1. A form of harner or fencing that sits on or near the top of
the ground with a hollow watertight base portion that utilises site applied water to stabalise and fix the fence/harrier
  2. 2. A form of barrier or fence with a Open tray like base portion or an enclosed dish like base portion which will quickly receive large volumes of water to stabalise the barrier fence 3 A form of barrier or fence which. utilises water applied ballast to stahalise the fence/barrier with a gutter arrangement between fence portion whereby the water can be distributed quickly throughout the entire fence/barrier, from convenient water locations
