Abstract

A method is disclosed in which two metal panels are bonded together. In a first step, a perforated adhesive tape is secured to the panels, and in a second step, a layer of adhesive is applied over and around the tape. The adhesive may then be heat cured to set.

Description

Method for sealing metal Danel ioints of a motor vehicle.

The present invention relates to a method of sealing metal panel joints for motor vehicles.

In the manufacture of automobile bodies, metal panel joints, where metal panels (steel sheet) are welded together to form a body structure, are sealed by a paste-like sealer which is usually applied to one face of a metal sheet and then heating it for curing. The sealer is required to protect the resultant joint against the ingress of water, dust, and dirt.

It appears that in certain areas of the vehicle body structure, two adjacent metal sheets can have a gap which is up to 7 to 8 mm wide. Because the sealer is usually adapted to cope with a maximum gap of 3 mm wide, it is necessary to seal such a gap with an additional amount of sealer. It requires additional time to identify the area where an additional quantity of sealer is required and considerable skill is required. However even by applying more sealer in this area it is possible that when the body structure goes into the oven to cure the sealer that the sealer in this area splits or pops due to the trapped air that expands underneath the sealer, thus creating blow holes.

It is an object of this invention to provide an improved method of sealing metal panel joints where the above problem is cured or alleviated.

According to the invention there is provided a method of sealing metal panel joints for a vehicle body structure, the method comprising the step of applying an adhesive tape across the metal panel joints, the adhesive tape comprising a perforated layer and a layer of adhesive applied to one surface of the perforated layer to fasten the perforated layer to the metal panel joints, and applying a sealer over and around the adhesive tape.

Preferably, the method further comprises the step of placing the vehicle body structure in an oven to cure the sealer.

Also preferably, the perforated layer is made of fiber materials.

An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by the way of example only, with reference to two metal sheet panels welded together to form part of a vehicle body structure.

In the assembled position of the two metal sheet panels, i.e. after they are welded together, a joint or seam occurs between the metal sheets.

The invention comprises the use of an adhesive tape. This adhesive tape comprises a perforated layer made of fiber materials and a layer of adhesive applied to one surface of the perforated layer. A removable protective layer may be provided to cover the adhesive layer when not in use.

The adhesive tape is applied across the joint so that it adheres to the adjacent edges of the two metal sheets thereby masking any gap between the metal panels. A paste-like sealer can then be applied over and around the surface of the adhesive tape by brushing or spraying. Spraying is preferred. The vehicle body structure can then be placed in the oven to cure the sealer.

Such a method offers the advantage of covering large gaps in the joints or seams and reduces the amount of sealer needed to cover the gap. In addition, the perforated layer of the adhesive tape will ensure that when the sealer is applied that the sealer can also pass through the perforations of the tape not only ensuring a good seal between the metal sheet panels but also bonding the tape and the seal to the metal sheets. Moreover, it has been found that split or pop of the sealer is avoided when the sealer is cured in the oven, the adhesive tape acting as an reinforcement of the sealer. It will be noted that such a method can also be applied to holes in the vehicle body structure which need to be watertight.
