Abstract

An angular sound baffle comprising two or more sound panels 1 flexibly connected to each other in a concertina configuration to allow lateral and vertical expansion or contraction of the angular sound baffle. Angular sound baffles can be inserted into voids between adjoining building structures such as between floors, ceilings and walls to reduce airborne and impact noise transmitted through the voids. Where space permits, angular sound baffles can be stacked on top of each other or fitted upside down to form a honeycomb configuration to further reduce transmitted noise.

Description

1 2434482

ANGULAR SOUND BAFFLE

BACKGROUND: This invention relates to an angular sound baffle for use in buildings.

Airborne and impact noise can transmit through separating floors, ceilings, walls and other voids within buildings. This can cause a nuisance or distraction to people situated on the receiving' side of the floor, wall or ceiling.

STATEMENT OF INVENTION:

To reduce these problems, the present invention proposes a number of sound panels joined together in a concertina' configuration to form an angular sound baffle. This angular sound baffle can be inserted into voids beneath floors, above ceilings, between walls and into other voids in any type of building. a

ADVANTAGES: * The combination of (a) the materials used to form each sound panel and (b) the method of assembly to form an angular sound baffle, causes deviation and dissipation of the sound waves through the building structure and thus a reduction in transmitted noise.

* rhe concertina' design allows the angular sound baffle to be expanded or contracted to suit the width of each void between constructional supports, which can be variable. Additional sound panels can also be easily added, if necessary.

* Because of the variable adjustment and the ability to add or reduce the number of sound panels, it is possible to ensure that the angular sound baffle does not foul' plumbing or cable services situated within the void. The sound panels can be reduced in length or overlapped if necessary, to avoid obstacles within each void.

* The angular sound baffles can be easily fitted without the need for skilled or trained labour.

INTRODUCTION TO DRAWINGS

-FIGURE 1 shows four sound panels I joined together rn a concertina' configuration to form an angular sound baffle.

-FIGURE 2 shows the angular sound baffle in concertina' configuration together with loose laid mineral woo1 or acoustic foam 3 and 5.

-FIGURE 3 shows the angular sound baffle in concertina configuration with six sound panels 1, pre-fitted with layers of acoustic foam 7 on each side.

-FIGURE 4 As figure 3 but with two angular sound baffles forming a honeycomb' configuration.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:

FIGURE 1: Each sound panel I contains one or more layers of hard dense' material which can be wood, metal, plastic, rubber or of a plaster or cementatous mix. If more than one hard layer is used then a soft resilient 1/ material can be inserted between each hard layer to form a sandwich' of materials. Hard or soft materials can vary in depth, and the length and widths of sound panels can be varied, for each angular sound baffle.

The hard layer (s) or sandwich' of materials is encased in a flexible material (cloth, plastic or foil are ideal) which can be continuous or joined together on the inner fold (see 2 -figure 1) to allow the sound panels to stack flat together for packing or be extended into a concertina configuration.

Figure 2: When inserted into a void, the edges of the sound panels should be protected from directly touching the building structures 4 & 6 by first of all inserting a resilient flexible layer 5 into the void.

The angular sound baffle is then inserted and its width adjusted to the width of the void.

A further resilient layer 3 is then loose laid over the top of the angular sound baffle and pressed gently into the undulations.

Ihe resilient layers 3 & 5 are manufactured from absorptive materials such as mineral wool or acoustic foam. c

Figure 3: Shows an angular sound baffle in concertina' configuration but in this application, each sound panel I is fitted with a fixed layer of acoustic foam 7 attached to each outer side. The acoustic foam 7 will be of sufficient low density to allow extension and contraction to the width of the angular sound baffle.

Figure 4: Shows two angular sound baffles as per figure 3 with one mounted upside down onto the other. These are located (but not joined by) a round bar 8 of wood, metal or plastic loose fitted' into the V' formed by the outer joint of the lower angular sound baffle. The top angular sound baffle is then inserted, upside down, to form a honeycomb configuration.
