Abstract
243,317. Bach, R. Nov. 20, 1924, [Convention date]. Finishing.-Hats or hat bodies made of hair or wool are treated with aldehydes or ketones or their compounds, or materials which, on decomposing yield these substances. Preferably the article is given subsequent treatment with an oxidizing agent. The hat body may be immersed in a solution of formaldehyde slightly acidulated with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, or the liquid may be used in the brushing machine, or the hat body may be steamed with the vapour. Acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde or compounds of the same with bisulphites; and acetone, benzophenone acetophenone, and aceto-acetic ester are mentioned as suitable for the first treatment : and peroxide of hydrogen, perborate and permanganate for the second. The treatment is stated to enhance the gloss and make the hats smooth and fine to the touch.
