Abstract
A solution suitable for the electrodeposition of chromium is prepared by melting chromium trioxide containing less than 1.2 per cent of free sulphuric acid and substantially no other impurities at a temperature at which oxygen is given off and the material is reduced e.g. 170 DEG C. to 200 DEG C., the melting being carried with exclusion of air as far as possible and with avoidance of excessive stirring and being discontinued before excessive reduction causes the mass to solidify into an insoluble product, the mass being dissolved in water when the reaction has been completed.
