Abstract

The device consists of a number of rigid cells positioned in a body of water where the natural rising movement of the water forces entrapped air into a system of ducts and when the water recedes, the air is drawn back into the cells. This causes a constantly circulating volume of air which can be used to provide power to such as an electrical generator, using Turbines.

Description

WAVE GENERATOR
SPECIFICATION
Background
The principal methods of electricity generation - fossil fuels and nuclear fusion- are now recognized to be unsustainable and environmentally detrimental. Among the possible sources of sustainable energy, wave-power would appear to be the most promising and, at the moment, least exploited. The seas are constantly in motion with large volumes of water rising and falling. If only a small fraction of the energy which drives this movement could be harnessed, the energy requirements of the world could be met without any environmental impact.
Description of the Invention
This invention consists of a number of rigid box-structure cells suspended above the sea bed such that the lower edge of the cells is below low water level and the upper edge of the cells is above high water level. The base of each cell is open to allow free ingress of water, the top of each cell is roofed over with the same rigid material as the walls to trap a pocket of air inside. The roof of each cell is fitted with two non-return valves - one to allow the trapped air to escape into a duct or pipe (the positive pressure duct,) when the water level in the cell rises, the other valve allows air to be sucked back into the cell from a second duct (the negative pressure duct) when the water level in the cell recedes.
The natural rise and fall of the waves would cause each cell to act like a pump - the water being the piston - to pump air into the positive pressure duct and draw the same air back in to the cell from the negative pressure duct. The air would flow from the positive pressure duct to the negative pressure duct through a turbine thereby producing usable power. The result would be a constantly moving column of air passing from the cells to the positive pressure duct, through the turbine to the negative pressure &et and back to the cells via the one-way valves.
This device could be either fixed or floating (ergo portable) and could be located anywhere in the ocean. Where the device is fixed, provision would be made o vent off/in air to compensate for the rise and fall of the tide.
The device could be used in conjunction with such as harbour installations, quays, jetties, pier, sea walls, etc. One significant advantage is that the environmental impact would be minimal and would be only visual. Indeed, it could be considered as enhancing the marine environment by creating artificial reefs.
A further advantage is that this device is based on vely low level technology and could therefore be utilised by anyone anywhere. *

Claims (4)

WAVE GENERATOR CLAIMS
1) A device to use the natural rise and fall of water to cause entrapped air to circulate in an enclosed system to provide power.
2) The utilisation in a system such as 1) above of the falling level of water to draw air into the system to supplement the power of the air compressed by the rising level of water.
3) The incorporation of a device as claimed in 1) above into marine installations such as piers, harbours, marinas, sea protection walls.
4) The construction of artificial islands for development purposes using devices such as described in 1) above.
