Band.-Brake mechanism more particularly for the hoisting drum of rotary draw works such as are used in drilling oil-wells comprises a pair of brake bands, one end of each of which is connected to an arm on a common rock shaft for tightening the band, the other ends being anchored to an equalizing bar. The hoisting drum 1 is provided with a pair of brake drums 2 each surrounded by a brake band 3 attached at one end by adjustable rods 28 and a wrist pin 23 to arms 22 on a sleeve 17, 18 keyed to a rock shaft 10 mounted in bearings 12 secured to the posts 13 of the derrick. The other end 7 of each band 3 is connected to an equalizing bar 4 pivoted at 9 to a sleeve 8 loosely mounted on the rock shaft 10. A counterweight 15 carried by the sleeve 8 prevents of the ends of the bands that are attached to the equalizing bar 4. The bands are tightened about the drums 2 by a handlever 25 attached to an arm 24 on the sleeve 18 to which one end of one of the bands is connected. The other sleeve 17 carries a weight 29 to assist in releasing the bands. The arrangement of the brake parts is such that they can readily be removed as a whole from the derrick.
