Description

WASTE The invention relates to waste, and particularly to a basin waste, namely a waste which is installed in a basin to provide for flow of water from the basin to a drain through an S- or U- bend or trap mounted on the underside of the basin. It is to be understood that the term "basin" used herein refers to a sink, bowl, vanity bowl, bath or the like which is used in a kitchen, bathroom, washroom or similar location, being usually made nowadays of pottery, ceramic or plastic. Such basins usually have a built-in overflow for carrying water away should the basin be overfilled for any reason, and for preventing flooding. Overflow water is fed into the main outlet below the outlet orifice from the basin, through a slotted outlet device. However, the slots in the device do not extend to the base thereof, resulting in an area in which waste water can collect below the basin outlet. This waste water is in effect trapped, and thus can become stagnant, resulting in noxious effluvia. Even if disinfectant is put down the outlet, it cannot mingle with the stagnant water, so cannot cure the problem. Householders usually take the view that the smell emanates from the drains, and cannot understand that treatment with disinfectant does not cure the problem, which arises with the collection of stagnant water as hereinbefore discussed. It is an object of the invention to seek to mitigate this disadvantage. According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a set of parts for assembly to provide a basin waste, comprising two body parts and means to secure those parts together spaced apart and substantially aligned when installed in a basin waste. The one body part may comprise metal, the other plastic. Thus the metal may be brass, plated chrome or gold, and the plastic may suitably be of polypropylene. The upper, when installed, part may be of metal. The securing means may comprise a bolt which extends from the first body part to the second body part. There may be a sleeve or captive nut to receive a distal end of the bolt in the other body part. This provides for pulling up of the other body part to make a secure installation in use. The one body part may be of substantially dish configuration with a base for passage of water therethrough and a seating for a head of the bolt. This provides a relatively simple construction. The one body part may have a peripheral flange for seating on a basin in the installed position. This provides for accurate location in use. The other body part may be substantially cylindrical and open-ended and may include a flange for bearing against an underside of a basin in the installed condition. The part may be externally threaded to receive a trap. The set may include respective annular seal devices adapted for mounting between the respective flanges and the basin in the installed condition. The flange of the other body part may comprise a locating means for the associated seal device, suitably comprising an annular groove in a surface thereof adapted to receive a complementary annular protuberance of the associated seal device. The seal device associated with the one body part may be annular and may taper towards the outer, in use, periphery. The seal device associated with the other body part may comprise a peripheral upstand adapted for location with a basin part in the installed position. According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a basin waste, assembled from a set of parts as hereinbefore defined. The basin may include a plug, which may be a pop-up plug operable by a lever operated mechanism or a cable operated mechanism. According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a basin including a basin waste as hereinbefore defined. A set of parts for assembly to provide a basin waste, a basin waste and a basin are hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings. Fig. 1 is a schematic longitudinal exploded sectional view of the set of parts according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a schematic longitudinal sectional view of the set of Fig. 1, assembled, and installed in a basin; Fig. 3 is a schematic longitudinal sectional view of an embodiment comprising a lever operated pop-up waste; and Fig. 4 is a schematic view similar to Fig. 3, of a cable-operated pop-up waste. Referring to the drawings, there is shown a set of parts 1 for assembly to provide a basin waste, comprising two body parts 2, 3 and means 4 to secure those parts together spaced apart and substantially aligned, in the embodiment the alignment being substantially coaxial and substantially vertical. The first body part 2 is of metal, suitably brass, of generally dish-configuration with a depending dish or well part 5 which has a base 6 formed by radial spiders 7 which extend between an inner surface and a boss 8 which has a through countersunk aperture 9 complementary to the profile of the underside of the slotted head 10 of a bolt 11 which comprises the securing means. The upper, in use, and as used, part of the well part 5, has a laterally extending, upwardly inclined, peripheral flange 12 for extending over in use a part of the basin 13 surrounding an outlet orifice 14 thereof. The other part 3 is of plastic, in the embodiment polypropylene, and is of generally cylindrical shape, open at both ends, the upper of which as shown and as in use, having a central boss 15 which has a through bore 16 with an inwardly directed shoulder 17 against which an insert or captive nut 18 engages and which also forms part of the securing means 4. There is a laterally extending flange 19 which bears against the underside of the basin 13 in use. The external surface of the cylindrical wall of the other body part 4 below the flange 19 is threaded 20 to receive as by screwing an S- or Ubend or trap (not shown). The flange 19 has an annular groove 21. The set also includes two annular seal devices 22, 23 of flexible elastomeric material. One seal device 22 tapers towards its periphery and has dimples 24 for enhancing the sealing effect. The other seal device 23 is of L-shape annular configuration, one limb 25 of the 'L' being adapted to fit with a push fit in the outlet of the basin 13, the other limb 26 having an annular protuberance 27 of a size and location to be received in the groove 21, which enhances both location and sealing effect. Although not shown the seal device 23 could be modified to include an externally peripheral upstand for engaging the outside of the outlet of the basin, to enhance location of the seal device 23. The basin 13 has an integral overflow channel 28 leading to the outlet which as shown comprises upper and lower outlet orifices 29, 30 for passage of water from the basin 13 through the outlet to the drains. In use, the set of parts 1 is assembled by passing the one body part 2 through the through orifice of the annular seal device 22 and offering up to and inserting in the upper outlet orifice 29 from the basin 13 so that the inner part of the seal device is trapped between the one body part and the part of the basin surrounding the orifice 29, the tapered part of the seal device then being between the flange 12 and the base of the basin 13. The seal device 23 is mounted on the flange 19 of the other body part 3 which is offered up to and inserted in the orifice 30, the seal device 23 being located as shown by the annular protuberance 27 in the groove 21. The sleeve or nut 18 has been inserted in the boss 15 so that when the bolt 11 is inserted and turned, the other part 3 is drawn upwardly, and the one part 2 downwardly, to secure the parts together, this action compressing the seal devices 22, 23 to effect sealing. Dimples 24 or the like on the respective seal devices 22, 23 ensure enhanced sealing round the associated body parts. Referring now to Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, in which like parts are indicated by like reference numerals, an embodiment 100 of the invention is shown in Fig. 3, with a "pop-up" plug 101 operated by a lever-operated mechanism 102. In this embodiment the bolt 11 is replaced by a hollow downwardly depending sleeve 103 in which a rod or spigot 104 with a free end 105 extending beyond the sleeve 103 is acted on by a lever 106 of the lever-operated mechanism 102. This latter comprises a sealed mounting 107 on part 3 receiving a rotatable member 108 which is rotated by manual operation of the lever 102.Downward pressure on a lever 109 of the lever system 102 from adjacent the basis rotates the member 108 in its sealed seating 107 so that the lever, or rod 106, fixed to the member 108 is raised to contact the free end of the rod 104, which is raised to raise the plug 101 to let out water in the basin. Release of the lever returns the plug to the position shown. Fig. 4 is similar to Fig. 3, but is cable or chain operated. There is a housing 110 on the part 3 forming a knuckle joint of a pivot 111 from which extends a curved finger 112 on which the lower end 105 of the rod 104 rests. Raising the chain or cable (not shown) rotates the pivot 111 to raise the finger 112 and hence the plug 101. Lowering the chain returns the plug. In every embodiment, if overflow water reaches the overflow chamber 28 via an overflow outlet from the basin, it is not held there as hitherto to become stagnant, but passes freely from the chamber, and basin, to the drain, via orifice 30. The waste devices embodying the invention and described with reference to the drawings have an additional advantage in that if one or both the seal devices "weep", turning of the bolt 11 with a screwdriver compresses the seal(s) to cure the problem. In the unlikely event of seal failure as by perishing, a seal device can be simply removed and replaced by dismantling the assembled waste by unscrewing the bolt 11, thereby avoiding the need to use horse-hair seals, settable seals and the like which have hitherto been used. Also, tightening of the bolt for curing "weeping" or after a seal is replaced is much simpler than hitherto, as such action on the bolt is effected from above, rather than from below the basin where access is often difficult or restricted. It will be understood that the set of parts hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings can be used with overflows such as are used with vanity bowls by providing an overflow connection to the device by an additional overflow connection. The bolt, of stainless steel, could be replaced by a hollow screw with a hexagonal head. It will be understood that there may be more than two body parts, providing they are securable together longitudinally.
