Abstract
A trailer 1 comprises a chassis 2 a load bed 12 and an intermediate frame 8. The load bed 12 may slide along the intermediate frame 8 between a forward position and a rearward position. A tipping mechanism, such as a hydraulic ram 10 may be used to elevate the load bed. With the load bed 12 in its rearward position on the intermediate frame 8 a shallow tipping angle is achieved, allowing vehicles to be loaded onto the bed. With the load bed 12 in its forward position, a steep tipping angle is available for unloading bulk material. The tailgate 20 may comprise a telescopic assembly and may be moved by means of a powered actuator.
Description
11 Load Carrying Trailer 13 The present invention relates to a load
carrying 14 trailer and in particular a trailer capable of carrying loose bulk materials, such as sand or 16 gravel, and also capable of carrying a vehicle, in 17 particular a heavy earth working or agricultural 18 vehicle, such as a tractor, digger, excavator or the 19 like, to and from a work site.
21 In the following description and claims the terms 22 "forward", "front", "rear" and "rearward" are to be 23 understood as relating to directions with respect to 24 the normal direction of travel of a towing vehicle and a trailer towed thereby.
27 One type of known trailer is a box trailer', having 28 upstanding, commonly upright, walls around a 29 generally a flat bed. Such trailers allow the carriage of loose materials such as sand and gravel.
31 One side, commonly the rear most side, is removable 32 or movable from an upright position to a lowered 1 position to allow the load being carried to be off 2 loaded. Frequently the box trailer can tipped to be 3 emptied by means of a hydraulic ram pivoting the box 4 trailer on the trailer chassis about a pivot axis adjacent the rear end of the trailer such that sand, 6 gravel, etc. can be allowed to slide off the rear of 7 a trailer upon tipping of the trailer.
9 Meanwhile, mechanical vehicles such as tractors, diggers and the like are commonly desired to be 11 carried to suitable work locations. Commonly, they 12 are carried on flat-bed trailers, and when ready to 13 be loaded or off loaded, separate ramps, commonly 14 merely two planks of solid timber such as railway sleepers, are used to create the means for such 16 vehicles to be able to go from ground level up to 17 the level of the trailer bed, and vice versa.
19 Alternatively, it is known to provide means for lowering the rear end of the trailer bed to a 21 position proximate the ground to permit the vehicle 22 to be driven or winched onto the trailer bed.
23 However, the tilt angle of the bed of such trailer 24 must be sufficiently shallow to enable to the vehicle to travel up onto the bed whilst avoiding 26 impact of the undercarriage of the vehicle with the 27 bed.
29 Such known flat-bed trailers are not suitable for carrying loose material, such as sand or gravel, due 31 to the lack of sides to retain the material on the 32 trailer bed and the inability of the bed to be 1 tipped to an angle sufficient to cause loose 2 material carried therein to slide off the bed.
4 it is an object of the present invention to provide a box trailer able to convey both vehicles and bulk 6 loose material.
8 Thus, according to the present invention, there is 9 provided a trailer for carrying loose bulk material and vehicles, the trailer comprising:- 11 a chassis having a plurality of wheels 12 rotatably attached thereto and connection means for 13 enabling the trailer to be connected to a towing 14 vehicle; a trailer bed having side walls around at least 16 three sides of the bed, 17 the trailer bed being mounted on an 18 intermediate frame member for translation between a 19 forward load carrying position and a rearward loading position, 21 the intermediate frame member being pivotally 22 mounted on the chassis at or adjacent the rearmost 23 end of the chassis for pivotal movement between a 24 first position, wherein the trailer bed is substantially parallel to the ground, and a second 26 position, wherein the trailer bed is inclined at an 27 angle to the ground of greater than 30, 28 first actuator means being provided for moving 29 the trailer bed with respect to the intermediate frame member between said forward load carrying 31 position and said rearward loading position, 1 second actuator means being provided for moving 2 the intermediate frame member with respect to the 3 trailer chassis between its first and second 4 positions, whereby the trailer can be brought into each of 6 three operating states, namely:- 7 i) a load carrying state, wherein the trailer bed 8 is in its forward position with respect to the 9 intermediate frame member and the intermediate frame member is in its first position with respect to the 11 chassis; 12 ii) a load discharging state, wherein trailer bed 13 is in its forward position with respect to the 14 intermediate frame member and the intermediate frame member is in its inclined second position; and 16 iii) a vehicle loading state, wherein the trailer 17 bed is in its rearward position with respect to the 18 intermediate member and the intermediate frame is in 19 an inclined third position between said first and second positions, wherein the rearmost end of the 21 trailer bed is proximate the ground.
23 Preferably a removable and/or moveable tailgate is 24 provided forming a rear wall of the trailer bed, said tailgate being moveable between a closed 26 position, to retain objects within the trailer bed 27 when the trailer is in its load carrying operating 28 state, and an open position, to permit loose 29 material within the trailer bed to slide out of the trailer bed when the trailer is in its load 31 discharging operating state and to permit vehicular 1 access to the trailer bed when the trailer is in its 2 vehicle loading operating state.
4 The tailgate may be separable from the rest of the trailer. In one embodiment, the tailgate is hinged 6 to the trailer so as to be rotationally movable 7 between said open and closed positions. More 8 preferably, the tailgate is hingedly connected to 9 the trailer bed partly, substantially or wholly along the lower edge thereof.
12 In one embodiment of the present invention, the 13 tailgate is wholly or substantially in alignment 14 with the plain of the bed of the trailer when in its open position.
17 The tailgate may be formed from two or more sections 18 which are slidingly, preferably telescopically, 19 movable with respect to one another between an extended position and a retracted position. Power 21 actuating means, such as one or more hydraulic 22 actuator, may be provided for moving the sections of 23 the tailgate between their retracted and extended 24 positions. Preferably formations are provided on at least one section of the tail gate, said formations 26 being engageable with corresponding formations 27 provided on adjacent walls of the trailer bed when 28 the tailgate is in its closed position and the 29 tailgate sections are in their extended position.
Preferably the tailgate sections are moveable into 31 their retracted positions when the tailgate is in 32 its lowered position to increase the bending 1 strength of the tailgate, permitting the tailgate to 2 be used as a loading ramp for loading a vehicle onto 3 the trailer bed.
Preferably, the tailgate has sufficient strength to 6 be a ramp for vehicles to be carried by the trailer, 7 such as cars, other trailers, diggers, tractors and 8 the like. In this way, the tailgate acts as a ramp 9 between the ramp surface and the trailer bed when the trailer is in its vehicle loading state.
12 The first and second actuating means may comprise 13 hydraulic rains, electrical actuators or the like.
14 Movement of the tailgate may also be by one or more hydraulic ram and pistons or other suitable 16 actuating means.
18 The trailer may include one or more sets of axles.
19 Any supporting jacks and/or brakes are dependent upon whether the trailer is intended to be 21 freestanding during use, or attached to a tractor 22 for such supporting action.
24 The trailer is preferably adapted to carry loads of greater than one ton, optionally greater than 5 or 26 10 tons.
28 Embodiments of the present invention will now be 29 described by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: 1 Fig. 1 is a side view of a trailer according to one 2 embodiment of the present invention; 4 Fig. 2 shows the trailer of Fig. 1 carrying an excavator in its load carrying operating state; 7 Fig. 3 shows the trailer of Fig. 1 in its vehicle 8 loading operating state; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the trailer of Fig. 11 1 in its vehicle loading operating state; 13 Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the trailer of Fig. 14 1 in its load discharging state; 16 Fig. 6 is a persepective view of the rear of the 17 trailer of Fig. 1 in its load carrying state; 19 Figs. 7 to 15 show perspective views of a trailer according to a second embodiment of the present 21 invention.
23 A trailer 1 according to a preferred embodiment of 24 the present invention comprises a chassis 2 having twin axles mounted thereon, each axle having a wheel 26 4 rotatably mounted at each distal end thereof. A 27 front end of the chassis is provided with 28 conventional connection means 6 to permit the 29 trailer 1 to be connected to the rear of a towing vehicle, such as a tractor.
1 An intermediate frame member 8 is pivotally 2 connected to a rear end of the chassis 2 such that 3 the intermediate frame member 8 can be pivoted 4 between a first or lowered position (Fig. 1) wherein the intermediate frame member 8 is parallel to the 6 ground and a second or raised position (Fig. 5) 7 wherein the intermediate frame member 8 is inclined.
8 A pair of first hydraulic rams 10 (see Fig. 5) are 9 provided for moving the intermediate frame member 8 between its first and second positions or to any 11 position intermediate said first and second 12 positions.
14 A trailer bed 12 is slidingly mounted on the intermediate frame member 8 to be moveable between a 16 forward load carrying position (Fig. 1) and a 17 rearward loading position (Fig. 3). A second 18 hydraulic ram 14 is provided for moving the trailer 19 bed 12 between its forward and rearward positions with respect to the intermediate frame member 8.
22 The trailer bed 12 comprises a flat rectangular base 23 16 having upstanding walls 18 extending from the 24 front and side edges thereof together with an openable rear tailgate 20 to define a closed box- 26 like container. The rear wall or tailgate 20 of the 27 trailer bed 12 is pivotally mounted to the base 16 28 to be moveable between an upright or closed position 29 and a lowered or open position.
1 A shown in Fig. 2, the trailer bed 12 is dimensioned 2 to receive an excavator 22 or other vehicle to be 3 carried to and from a work site.
Control means are provided to enable an operator to 6 reconfigure the trailer between first, second and 7 third operating states.
9 In a first operating state, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the second hydraulic ram 14 is operated to place the 11 trailer bed 12 in its forward position and the first 12 hydraulic rams 10 are operated to place the 13 intermediate frame member 8 in its first or lowered 14 position. In this position a load, either bulk loose material such as sand or gravel, or a vehicle, 16 such as an excavator, can be retained in the trailer 17 bed 12 and carried to a desired destination.
19 When the trailer 1 is to be used to carry bulk loose material, the trailer 1 can be loaded in its first 21 operating state and subsequently emptied by 22 releasing the tailgate 20 such that tailgate drops 23 to its lowered or open position and operating the 24 first hydraulic rams 10 to tilt intermediate frame member 8 and the trailer bed 12 to an inclined 26 position to place the trailer 1 its second operating 27 state or load discharge state as shown in Fig. 5.
29 When the trailer is to be used to carry a vehicle, such as an excavator 22 as shown in Fig. 2, the 31 vehicle can be loaded and unloaded from the trailer 32 by operating the second hydraulic rain 14 to slide 1 the trailer bed 12 from its forward load carrying 2 position to its rearward loading position and 3 operating the first hydraulic rams 10 to tilt the 4 intermediate frame member 8 and trailer bed 12 from its first position to an inclined position 6 intermediate said first and second positions (shown 7 in Fig. 3) wherein an end region 24 of the trailer 8 bed 12 is proximate the ground. The tailgate 20 is 9 released to move from its upper closed position to its lowered open position wherein an end of the 11 tailgate 20 abuts the ground such that the tailgate 12 20 can act as a ramp or extension of the trailer bed 13 12 to assist loading and unloading of the vehicle.
As best illustrated by Figs 3, 4 and 6, in the first 16 embodiment, the tailgate 20 comprises two parts, a 17 base or lower part 26 and a distal or upper part 28, 18 telescopically connected together and driven by an 19 actuator, such as a hydraulic ram (not shown), to be moveable with respect to one another between 21 extended and retracted positions. In its extended 22 position, formations 30 on the distal or upper part 23 of the tailgate can engage corresponding formations 24 32 on the rear of the sidewalls of the trailer bed 12 to lock the tailgate 20 in its closed or upper 26 position. The tailgate is released by retracting 27 the distal or upper part 28 of the tailgate 20 into 28 the base or lower part 26 to release said formations 29 30 on the distal or upper part 28 from the corresponding formations 32 on the sides of rear of 31 the sidewalls of the trailer bed 12, permitting the 32 tailgate 20 to pivot to its lower or open position.
1 The retraction of the distal or upper part 28 into 2 the base or lower part 26 effectively reinforces the 3 tailgate 20 and permits the tailgate 20 to be used 4 as a ramp to support a heavy earth working vehicle, such as excavator, to be carried by the trailer (see 6 Fig. 4).
8 Figs. 7 to 14 show perspective views of a trailer 9 according to a second embodiment of the present invention, having a single piece tailgate 20' 11 moveable between a raised position (shown in Figs 6 12 to 8) and a lowered position (shown in Fig 9) by 13 means of actuating means, such as hydraulic rams.
As shown in Figs 7 to 9, when the trailer is in its 16 forward load carrying position, the tailgate 20' is 17 moved to its raised position and held closed by 18 means of the associated actuating means to retain a 19 vehicle or loose material within the trailer bed.
21 As shown in Figs 11 and 12, when the trailer is in 22 its rearward loading position, the tailgate 20' is 23 moved to its lowered position to act as a ramp to 24 assist loading of a vehicle onto the trailer bed.
The construction an operation of the remainder of 26 the trailer is the same as that of the first 27 embodiment described above and thus need not be 28 described in more detail.
Figs 13 and 14 illustrate the trailer in its load 31 discharge state for unloading loose material from 32 the trailer bed.
