Abstract

A sacrificial disc protection system includes a CD or DVD type disc protecting covering 17 of the type that can be in place during disc 5 storage or whilst the disc 5 is in use within a compatible player. A thin pre-cut transparent covering that is closely matched to the size of a standard disc 5 including its central cut out 19, that can be self adhered using electrostatic attraction or adhered due to an integral adhesive to the disc playing surface in order to offer some protection to the disc 5 from incidental damage that may occur during disc 5 storage or use. The disc protection covering 17 can be applied quickly to music, data, movie or games discs 5 and will provide some protection from incidental damage that may otherwise render the disc 5 unplayable. The system will include a disc protection covering applicator 12 as indicated in figure 1 to make it easier to apply the disc protection covering 17 to the disc playing surface withou trapping air between the disc protection covering 17 and the disc 5 playing surface. A stack of protective coverings 7 is supported on a nonstick sheet 8 on a curved sponge or foam support 9. As the disk is pressed down the foam support is compressed, flattening the curved surface and progressively applying the protective covering. The lid 1 of the disc protection covering applicator device incorporates a wipe down sponge 2 to wipe away any air that is trapped between the disc protection covering 17 and the disc 5 playing surface during application.

Description

SACRIFICIAL DISC PROTECTION SYSTEM
The invention relates to a CD or DVD type disc protecting covering 17 of the type that can be in place during disc storage or whilst the disc is in use. The system will include an applicator device as indicated in fig I. The disc protection covering 17 can be applied quickly and left in place 6 during normal use of music, data, movie or games disc 5 of the standard CD size and will provide some protection from incidental damage that may otherwise render the disc 5 unplayable in an otherwise compatible player.
An object of this invention is to provide a disc protective covering 17 that can be quickly and simply applied to the disc 5 in order to offer a degree of protection from scratches. If the disc protective covering 17 becomes damaged to the extent that the disc 5 no longer plays then it may be quickly and at low cost be removed and replaced and providing the damage was only incidental to the disc protective covering 17 it will leave the disc 5 in good working order.
Accordingly, this invention of a disc protective covering 17 is a thin transparent * covering that is closely matched to the shape of the playing surface of a standard CD 5 including a central cut out 19.
Preferably the disc protection cover 17 is made of transparent Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) or similar plastic type material and may include additives to improve material transparency and pliability and will be of a thickness in the range of a 1 micro-metre to a 500 hundred micro-metre. When the disc protective covering 1 7 comes into close proximity or contact with the disc 5 it will self adhere by electrostatic attraction or be adhered using a non-permanent integral adhesive. In order to aid the release of air trapping between the disc protective covering 17 and the disc 5 playing surface the disc protective covering 17 may be made from a breathable surface.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE 1, shows a side sectional elevation view of a multi-pack of disc protection coverings 7 which are made up of several disc protective coverings 17 each separated by a non-stick divider sheet 16 and stacked upon each other as indicated in an enlarged view. The divider sheets 16 would be pre-cut the same as the disc protective covers except the outer diameter would be slightly larger than the disc protection covers 17 to enable easy removal via the finger slot 15. The multi-pack of disc protective coverings 7 are indicated within a disc protection covering applicator 12.
FIGURE 2, shows a sectional plan through the disc pmtection covering applicator 12.
As shown in figure 1, the disc protector applicator has a lid I with an integral wipe sponge 2. Once the disc 5 has been located on the disc locating shoulder 3 it is pushed down in a firm brisk movement against the force of the spring 10 and the sponge or foam type material 9 until the downward movement is prevented when inverted cup 4 strikes the bottom cup 11.
The disc protective covering 17 is layered in multi-packs 7 with tissue type separator sheets to make dispensing of the disc protective covering 17 easier.
The renewable multi-packs 7 would be placed onto a non-slip top surface 8 which in turn would rest on a curved sponge or foam base 9. The non-slip top surface would move independently of the sponge or foam type base 9. The curved sponge or foam type base 9 has a radiused top onto which the disc protection coverings 17 will sit in a curved way along one axis to minimise air trapping that may otherwise take place between the disc protection covering 17 and the disc 5 as it is pressed down onto the disc protection covering 17.
A spring 10 in bottom cup 11 in-conjunction with the locating shoulder 3 that is incorporated as part of the inverted top cup 4 has the function of returning the disc 5 to its start position after it is released following pressing onto the disc protection covering 17 where it can then be removed by hand inspected by eye and wiped as necessary to remove any trapped air between the disc protective covering 7 and the disc playing surface using the sponge or foam type material 2 that is integrated into the lid 1. When the lid is removed the sponge or foam type material is to expand to finish proud of the lid 1 edge.
The applicator 12 would be typically made for a plastic type material and would include a breather hole 14 and some feet 13 that allow the air to move in and out as the inverted cup 4 is pressed and released during application of the disc protective covering 17. When the disc 5 is removed a blank disc 18 made from a clear plastic type material would be inserted to act as a dust cover for the protective covering multi-packs 7. The blank disc 1 8 will also act as a surface for the lid 1 with integral wipe down sponge 2 to press against when the lid is replaced to provide a protective seal.
The divider sheets 16 may be removed and disposed of using the finger slot 15.

Claims (10)

  1. A thin pre-cut transparent covering that is closely matched to the size of a standard CD or DVD, including a central cut out, that can be self adhered using electrostatic attraction of adhered due to an integral adhesive to the disc playing surface in order to offer some protection to the disc from incidental damage that may occur during disc storage or use in a compatible player.
  2. 2. The disc protection covering as claimed in Claim I, is a covering made of Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) or similar plastic type material and may include additives to improve material transparency and pliability and will be of a thickness in the range of a 1 micro-metre to a 500 hundred micro-metre.
  3. 3. The disc protection covering as claimed in any preceeding claim, will when coming into close proximity or contact with the disc playing surface self adhere by electrostatic attraction or be adhered using a nonpermanent integral adhesive.
  4. 4. The disc protection covering as claimed in any preceeding claim, in order to aid the reduction of air trapping between the covering and the disc playing surface may be a breathable surface.
  5. 5. The disc protection covering as claimed in any preceeding claim, in order to aid its application to the disc playing surface would come in multi-packs including a tissue type non-stick separator sheet between each disc protector covering.
  6. 6. The disc protection covering as claimed in any preceeding claim, is easily fitted in place using a disc protection covering applicator which holds the disc horizontally whilst it is pushed down by hand in order to present it to the disc protection covering in a way that maximises the accurate positioning of the disc protection covering onto the disc playing surface whilst minimising air trapping that may otherwise take place between the disc protection covering and the disc playing surface.
  7. 7. The disc protection covering applicator as claimed in Claim 6, will include a sponge or foam type material with a single axis radius top on which the disc protection covering will sit in a curved way to minimise air trapping that may otherwise take place between the disc protection covering and the disc playing surface.
