Description

IMPROVEMENTS uN DOOR STOPS This invention relates to door stops and is
particularly concerned with foot releasing door stops.
According to the invention, there is provided a door stop which comprises a catch having a recess engageable with the bottom of a door, a resilient member connected to the catch and means for securing the resilient member to a wall or the floor adjacent to the door for which the door stop is intended.
Preferably, the resilient member takes the form of a conical compression or torsion spring. The means for securing the spring to a wall or floor preferably takes the form of a screw.
The door catch may be pivotally connected to the resilient member so that the door catch can be pivoted to an inoperative position when the door stop is not required for use.
A mount may be provided which is adapted to be fitted to the bottom of a door and which is engageable in the recess in the door catch.
The invention will now be described in detail, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which:- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a door stop according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a mount for use with the door stop shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side view showing the mount illustrated in Fig. 2 engaged with the door stop shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the door stop according to the invention engaging a door to hold the door in an open position; Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a modified form of mount secured to the bottom of a door; and Fig. 6 is a side view showing a door stop according to the invention engaging a door having a lip.
In the drawings, like parts are denoted by like reference numerals.
Reference will first be made to Fig. 1 of the drawings in which the door stop comprises a catch 1 having a recess 2 and an inclined surface 3 leading from one edge of the recess 2 to the outer end of the catch 1. The other or inner end of the catch 1 has a pair of apertured lugs 4 adapted to receive a pivot pin 5. A conical torsion spring 7 has a ferrule 8 connected to its smaller end, the ferrule terminating in an apertured lug 9 which is fitted between the lugs 4 with the apertures aligned so that the pivot pin 5 connects the catch 1 to the ferrule 8 in a pivotal manner. The pivot pin 5 is secured in place by a circlip 6. A screw 10 is secured to the larger end of the spring 7.
As shown in Fig. 2, a mount 11 has a recess 12 which is adapted to receive the bottom of a door (not shown in Fig. 2). Bores 13 and 14 are provided in the sides of the mount bounding the sides of the recess 12 to enable the mount to be secured to a door by screws or the like. A lip 15 extends from the mount 11 in a downwards direction when the mount is fitted to a door.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, when a door 16 to which the mount 11 has been fitted is moved to the open position, the lip 15 on the mount 11 will run up the inclined surface 3 and the snap into the recess 2. The spring 7 will enable the catch to be depressed when the lip 15 is running up the inclined surface 3 and the catch I will return to its normal position, as a result of the action of the spring 7, once the lip 15 enters the recess 2 as shown in Fig. 3. The door 16 will then be held effectively in an open position. The door stop can be released simply by depressing the end of the inclined surface 3 with the foot when it is desired to close the door.
The door stop is secured to a wall 17 adjacent to the door 16 by means of the screw 10. The choice of location of the screw from the doorway 1 8 is optional, the further the door stop is located from the doorway, the greater degree of opening of the door can be achieved. However, fine adjustment of the open position of the door can be achieved by pivoting the catch I with respect to the spring 7 about the pivot pin 5. If the door stop function is not required, the catch I can be pivoted to a position in which it extends substantially parallel to the wall 17.
Fig. 5 shows another embodiment in which the mount consists of a single plate 21 provided with bores 23 and 24 to enable the mount to be secured to a door 16 by screws or the like. As shown in Fig. 5, part of the plate 21 extends below the bottom of the door 16 and this part performs the same function as the lip 15 on the mount shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The mount is normally only required for use with timber doors. Doors made of uPVC or similar plastics material are normally provided with a lip as indicated by the lip 27 on the door 26 shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. In this case, the lip 27 acts in exactly the same manner as the lip 15 of the mount 11 shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings and a separate mount is not needed.
Although the door stop according to the invention is intended to be installed in such a manner that it will engage the bottom of a door, this is not essential and the door stop could be arranged to engage the top or even the side edge of a door.
The invention is not restricted to the above described embodiments but variations and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
