Abstract

The pin press is a three functional device. It can be used to insert drawing pins into any substance that a drawing pins will feasibly go. The device can also be used to extract pins, and because it has a cavity 7 in the handle section 6 to accommodate approximately fifty pins it acts as a container as well. The pin press has a spring-loaded plunger 6 with a magnetised tip 2 to hold the pin in position prior to insertion. A claw 3, which has a magnetised tip, is attached to guide 8 and is used to extract the pins. The guide has the purpose of preventing the pins from bending when being pushed by the plunger.

Description
This invention relates to a device for the insertion and removal of drawing pins. The device will be found to be extremely useful when for example, putting up Christmas decorations. In some cases pressing in drawing pins with the thumb can be found to be almost impossible, especially into surfaces such as artexed ceilings etc. with this invention it is relatively easy.
To insert the pin you simply place it inside the guide, onto the tip of the spring-loaded plunger, where it will be held in position prior to insertion by an embedded magnet.
The magnet is stepped back one millimetre from the tip of the plunger; this is to compensate for the pinhead being dome shaped and to prevent it from rocking. You then hold the device squarely against the surface, holding the guide with one hand and pressing the handle in with the other. If the guide is held squarely on it prevents the pin from bending and the pin will go straight in. you are using the power of your hand to insert the pin rather than just your thumb, as in the normal way.
The device is designed so that the pin can only go in two thirds of its full extent; this has the advantage of making the pin easy to remove either by hand or by using the device.
To remove the pin using the device you use the claw attachment, which is set at approximately 450 angle to the guide. The reason for this is that it allows for leverage, this makes the pin very easy to extract and also stops it bending when being removed.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure (D shows an elevation view of the whole device.
Figure shows a plan view of the guide and extracting claw.
Figure () shows a side view of the guide and extracting claw.
Main drawing figure (I). shows the device with a pin) in place on the tip of the spring () loaded plunger @) ready for insertion. The guide, which has the purpose of preventing the pin from bending when the plunger is being pushed through. The guide has a claw attachment for extracting the pin; the claw would have the top ten millimetres magnetized so that it would hold the pin and prevent it from dropping on the floor after being extracted.
The handle section has a cavity to accommodate approximately fifty pins; this has a see through Perspex panel, which would enable the pins to be seen inside.
I would propose that the handle section of the device be made from plastic and the plunger, guide and claw be made from steel.
(Handy hint) The device also works extremely well for inserting pins, when it is held squarely to the surface with one hand and striking the plunger handle firmly with the other!
