Evaporating and distilling plant and processes. - In evaporating liquid, air or gas is circulated through the heated liquid, and through a condenser, the hot condensate from which is used to heat the liquid. As shown in Fig. 1, the liquid to be evaporated is circulated by a pump 15 through a tubular heat exchanger 18 and a steam hot gas or electric heater 20 to the upper end of a column 1 containing coke, metal rings, metal spirals, iron shavings &c., and is returned from the base of the column to the pump 15. Fresh liquid may be supplied from a tank 12 by a pipe 13 and concentrated liquid may be removed by a pipe 30. Air drawn by a pump 4 passes upwards through the column 1, through a pipe 7 and upwards through a second column 9 and returns by a pipe 11 to the pipe 4. The hot condensate from the base of the column 9 is pumped by a pump 24 through the heat-exchanger 18, and passes into the top of the column 9 by a pipe 10. Surplus condensate may be withdrawn through a pipe 28. In a modification, the hot condensate may be used to evaporate a secondary fluid, such as ammonia, sulphur dioxide, &c., the vapour from which is compressed into a coil immersed in the liquid to be evaporated. The vapour becomes liquefied and is returned to the first coil. In place of the column 1, a flat evaporating- vessel through which liquid flows in,one direction, and air or gas passes over its surface in the opposite direction may be used. Alternately the evaporation may be effected in a circular vessel having a conical bottom over which rotary blades pass to sweep crystals into a side pocket. The vessel is closed by a cover having depending baffles to form a circuitous course for the air. The liquid may be heated by immersion of a coil which receives compressed vapours from a secondary fluid used for transferring heat from the condensate. In drying pasty materials, they are spread on a rotary drum contained in a casing through which air or gas circulates, and heated by the compressed secondary vapours admitted to its interior.
