Abstract
A reinforcing strut for the profile of a window frame is secured into the hollow surrounding material by a plurality of projections extending from the surface of the reinforcing strut. The projections may secure by either frictional means or by digging into the interior surface of the surrounding material. Strut may be manufactured from galvanised steel and the projections may be V shaped teeth cut into the strut.
Description
1 2421976 Reinforcing strut.
This invention relates to a reinforcing strut For the purposes of this invention, a reinforcing strut is considered to be that entity that is inserted inside a hollow material which, when secured to the hollow material, increases its inherent strength.
Such reinforcing struts are well known and in common usage. They are commonly employed to add stiffness or rigidity to the hollow surrounding materials, or to allow the hollow surrounding materials to have further parts secured to them by using the reinforcing strut as a structural entity that allows the positive securing of these additional parts.
Their use is commonly desired for either financial, weight, speed of production, or aesthetic reasons.
It is common that they are secured to the hollow surrounding material by screws, rivets, pins, or similar entities which pierce both the hollow surrounding material and the reinforcing strut and secures one to another at sufficient individual positions that the strength of the reinforcing strut may be used by the hollow surrounding material.
According to this invention there is a reinforcing strut which does not require securing by means of screws, rivets, pins, or other similar entities which pierce both the hollow surrounding material and the reinforcing strut, but which is secured to the hollow surrounding material by dint of projections protruding externally from its own surface and which secure it to the hollow surrounding material by friction and/or the projections digging into the interior surface of the hollow surrounding material.
An example of an embodiment of the invention will now be described It must be noted that this is not the only means by which the invention can be accomplished, merely a simple example to allow ease of comprehension of the principle This example will take the form of a reinforcing strut for use within the uPVC window fabrication industry, where it is common for hollow uPVC sections (usually referred to as profile') to have strength added to them by the internal attachment of galvanised steel reinforcing members. These reinforcing members are commonly attached inside the profile by dint of screws piercing through both the profile and the member, and then the screws being tightened sufficiently so that the reinforcing member is drawn tightly against the internal surface of the profile.
For the purpose of this example a suitable reinforcing strut will be deemed to be one which, prior to having the protrusions created, would have fitted inside the uPVC profile and left a 1mm gap between its own external surface and the interior walls of the profile A suitable reinforcing strut is chosen. It then has V' cuts created along its length. These V' cuts have equal length sides of 5mm long, are 50mm apart along the length of the reinforcing strut, and all have the same orientation along the reinforcing strut (they all face the same way along the length of the strut). The points' of each of the V' cuts are then struck with a metal punch so that they uniformly stand 1. 5mm proud from the external surface of the reinforcing strut The reinforcing strut now resembles a length of galvanised steel with protruding teeth' which all point in a single direction.
The reinforcing strut is orientated so that the teeth' will allow insertion into the profile (the raised part of each tooth' is the last part of the V' cut to enter the profile) and the reinforcing strut is now forced into position inside the profile Each of the teeth' presses against and/or into the internal surface of the profile and secures the reinforcing strut inside the profile.
As previously noted, this is not the only embodiment of the invention. It is accepted that embodiments of this invention may have shapes, sizes, structural requirements, and sectional aspects that may differ markedly from this simple example.
Claims (3)
1. A reinforcing strut which is secured to the hollow surrounding material by dint of projections protruding externally from its own surface.
2. A reinforcing strut, as claimed in claim 1, which secures itself to the hollow surrounding material by friction.
3. A reinforcing strut, as claimed in claim 1, which secures itself to the hollow surrounding material by dint of the projections digging into the interior surface of the hollow surrounding material 4 A reinforcing strut, as claimed in claim I, which secures itself to the hollow surrounding material by dint of a combination of friction and/or its projections digging into the interior surface of the hollow surrounding material
