Abstract
A fire escape unit comprises a box having mounting brackets 7,9, allowing the box to be securely fixed to a vertical surface, e.g. under a window, and a collapsible ladder that is normally stowed within the box. The ladder comprises steps 1 linked together by straps 12. A cover for the box may be released by manual pull pins.
Description
Fire Escape Box.
This invention relates to a fire escape ladder.
In the likely event of a fire breaking out, people above ground level in buildings are left with little or no chance of escape , thus resulting in desperate measures being taken , for example through jumping or waiting helplessly for rescue and suffering smoke inhalation.
Given a safe option, the above prospects could be eliminated.
The use of conventional ladders can cause a number of problems if their main purpose is purely a means of escape in the event of a fire.
Most homes are equipped with a fire alarm ,which , in majority of cases is very comforting.
However, what to do once one is aware that there is a fire could bring about a number of problems.
Among these problems, the issue of home security would be virtually none existent if a ladder is constantly left erected next to a first or second floor window.Burglars would seize the opportunity and this could lead to financial loss to the residents or injury to children trying to be adventurous.
The other problem that could arise in the event of a fire breaking out is that, extension ladders can only be set up by people on ground level, therefore rendering themselves useless if there is nobody on the ground level to set them up.
To overcome this problem ,the present invention proposes a fire escape ladder that is wall mounted and descreetly housed ready for use in the likely event of a fire.
The means of escape is provided by a deployable ladder that is mounted below a window cill and deployment is carried out when pull pins are released and a cover is removed , thus allowing the ladder to un-stack itself ready for use.
This invention will now be described by the following diagrams.
Diagram [1] shows a wall without the fire escape box.
Diagram [2 ] shows a wall with the fire escape box mounted complete with the cover, which is being held in place by two pull pins , one on either side and one on the top side.
Diagram [3 ] shows a wall with the fire escape box deployed to form an escape ladder, with the steps being linked by a strap that is clamped to each step using nuts, bolts and washers.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAIN UNIT.
Place figure ( 7 ) on a bench as a top section.
Place figure ( 6 ) directly under figure ( 7 ) to match the narrow side of figure ( 7 ) Place figure ( 8 ) On either side of figure ( 6 ) making sure that they interlock at 90 degrees.
Place figure ( 9 ) underneath both figure ( 8 ) ensuring that that the protruding sides are equal in length.
Now place the plate, figure (10) in the unit ensuring that none of the components move.
Clamp the assembly.
Drill through the marked dots on the plate ,Figure ( 10 ),using a drill bit size 7mm. Pass the bolts figure (13 ) through the holes and use the nuts ,figure (22).
Drill through the top shorter side of top section figure ( 7 ),and figure ( 6 ) through the marked dots using a drill bit size 7mm.
Place top support step, figure ( 2 ),with the flat surface facing the under side of figure ( 6 ) and clamp it.
With the same dnll bit size, 7mm,drill through the top support step, figure ( 2 ). Release the clamp and remove the top support step figure (2 ) drill through the marked strips ,4 in total ,23 mm across each comer.
Place the unit figure ( 2 ), on its side and place U -shape figure ( 3 ) and drill through both units using drill bit size 7mm.
Repeat the above last two procedures on the following 15 steps figures ( 1 ) and figure ( 3 ).
Pass straps figure ( 12 ) through the drilled strips of the top support step figure ( 2 ) and make sure that they are of equal length when the beginnings of the strap meet the ends.
Pass the bolts figure ( 19 ),through the washer plate figure ( 18 ) and rubber washer figure ( 17 ) and then through the strap figure ( 12 ),through to the 'U'-shape figure ( 3 ) and then through to the aligned holes on the'T'-shape figure ( 2 ).
On the other side where the bolts figure ( 19 ),protrude,place rubber washer figure ( 17 ),then washer plate figure ( 18 ) and secure with a nut,figure ( 20 ).
Now place the top support step figure ( 2 ) right under figure ( 6 ) for the holes to align and then secure it by passing a bolt, figure( 23 ) through figure ( 7 ) and figure ( 6 ) and the top support step figure ( 2 ) and secure with a nuts figure ( 20 ).
Repeat this procedure on the following three holes.
Pass the strap figure( 12 ) through the other step figure ( 1 ), 300 mm away from the top support step, figure ( 2 ).
Pass bolts figure ( 19 ), through the washer plate figure ( 18 ) and rubber washer ( 17 ) and then through the strap figure ( 12 ) then through the 'U' -shape figure ( 3 ) and then through the aligned holes on the '7-shape figure ( 1 ).
On the other side where the bolts figure ( 19 ) protrude, place rubber washer figure ( 17 ),then washer plate ( 18 ) and then secure with nut figure ( 20 ).
Repeat the procedure on the remaining fourteen steps, figure ( 1 ), 300 mm away from each other.
Neatly fold away the straps under the steps and use the cover, diagram ( 2 ) to cover the unit.
COVER ASSEMBLY
Place top angle Figure (5) on bench.
Place the two side angles Figure (4) on either side of Figure (5) to meet at right angles.
Place bottom angle Figure (5) to meet the two side angles Figure (4) at right angles.
Place the plate Figure (11) inside the now formed rectangle and clamp the unit together.
Drill through the marked spots using drill bit size 5mm.
Use rivets ,Figure (21) to secure the unit together.
