Abstract

Animal fibres and fabrics, such as wool, fur, bristles, silk, leather, and feathers, are subjected to the action of ammonia and ozonized air or ozone (produced for example by ultra-violet radiation or silent discharge), whereby their power of absorbing dyestuffs is improved and in some cases mordants are not required. In an example the fibres or fabrics are soaked with a 5 per cent ammonia solution and, while still wet, placed in a closed chamber, through which a current of ozonized air saturated with water is passing. From time to time test pieces are removed and if acid the fibre or fabric is again soaked in ammonia. After treatment, the material is washed and may be dyed immediately.
