Abstract

241,731. Lane, E. M. Nov. 17, 1924. Moulds for making blocks with imitation mortar-joints from a wet concrete mixture. The mould consists of a box with hinged side and end walls as shown in plan in Fig. 1. Strips 12, 14 arranged like the joints of brickwork are laid at the bottom or a the top of the mould in notches in the walls, and these strips project so that they may be grasped by the hand for withdrawal after the mould has been filled. The strips are withdrawn longitudinally, or when at the top of the mould they may be lifted out. To hasten setting, the mould is provided with absorbent horizontal and vertical cores A, B which extend entirely through the block, the horizontal cores being spaced from the bottom of the mould. The vertical cores B are arranged so that the blocks will interlock to represent correctly the appearance of courses of brickwork. The cores B are formed by sheetmetal containers 16, 17 with perforated walls, filled with sand or other absorbent material, and resting on the bottom of the mould. The containers 16, 17 are recessed at the bottom to accommodate the strips 12. The horizontal cores A are. formed in boxes, one of which is ishawn separately in Fig. 5, and in position in the mould in Fig. 1. The box consists of a three-sided former 21, which is inverted for filling, a cover-plate 22, 23, and an end-cover 26. The box is passed through an opening in one side of the mould and is supported at the opposite side by a rod 24 on the plate 22. In use, a very wet fine sand-concrete mixture, which may be coloured, is first poured into the mould to form the face of the block, a layer of comparatively dry concrete mixture is poured over this, the horizontal core-box is inserted, and the mould filled with the wet mixture. The core box may be withdrawn immediately afterwards, the cover 26 being removed and replaced by a stripper. After a few minutes, the vertical walls of the mould may be removed from the block. The horizontal cores may be cylindrical, and the core box may be in one piece.
