Abstract

A simple method of utilising the power of the rising and falling tides and, to some extent, wave action. It is based on a floating weight, eg a pontoon 4, activating a lever 3 across a fulcrum 2 and converting the force and movement into electrical power via a power take-off 5 through various methods. Although large, it could be made attractive. The fulcrum 2 may be mounted on an industrial dock so that the system can be incorporated into the cargo lifting arrangements thereby recovering some of the power expended.

Description

24 1 6567 Tidal/Wave Power Take-off Page I Electrical energy being in ever
greater demand and, when coupled with the ever increasing demand for reduced carbon emissions, we must utilise any and all 'clean' methods of producing it.
Figure I shows such a method:- A dock or area No.l built, or already in existence, on a body of water subject to wave activity and/or high tides, may be used. This can be of any size within reason, from a simple private/domestic dock, to a promenade along several miles of an estuary such as the Bristol Channel, where I understand there are tides of thirty feet or more. In the latter case, the major components of the system may be made in the style of Victorian lamp posts, as used in coastal resorts, to give a pleasing aspect.
It may also be incorporated into a working dock used for the loading and discharging of general cargo and/or containers.
Built on the larger scale; the lever No.3,could be of a length to cross from a vessel, completely over a dock or promenade to the point where power can be converted.
The system would consist of a fulcrum post No.2 carrying a lever No.3. On the water side of the fulcrum, the lever is attached to a pontoon No.4. On the shore side of the fulcrum the lever is attached to the power takeoff No.5. This could be a single method or a combination of methods, resulting in the generation of electrical power.
Figures 2 & 3 show a simple method of compressing and/or pumping a gas.
Tidal/wave Power Take-off On learning that the authorities would not allow Dibden Bay to be used for extended container docks at Southampton, I then thought that if my idea was incorporated into a new dock, perhaps in an area of higher tides, and the container vessels were docked at the pontoons, with the lever extended and used to lift the containers, the extra movement of the lever would create more horse power.
Each time a container passed the fulcrum, power would be conserved. Some would be expended in lifting the container but it would be regained at the other side of the fulerurn.

Claims (1)

  1. Tidal/Wave Power Take-off Claims This is a very simple method of
converting the power of a rising and falling tide into electrical power.
In no way will it create pollution.
In a non industrial area it would be no more unsightly than the ornate iron work on a Victorian seaside promenade.
On an industrial dock it can be incorporated into the lifting arrangements required to move cargo and thereby recovering some of the power expended in doing this.
It will be extremely easy to build. l
Tidal/Wave Power Take-off Claims Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows This is a very simple method of converting the power of a rising and falling tide to electrical power; because of its size, all the necessary equipment may be incorporated in the body of the pontoon as well as adjacently or remotely, it will not create pollution, in a non industrial area it could be no more unsightly than the ornate iron work on a Victorian seaside promenade and as an industrial dock it can be incorporated into the lifting arrangements required to move cargo and thereby recover some of the power expended in doing this, it will be easy to build. e C
