Abstract
An energy saving (regenerative) brake system comprises a pair of drums (brake drum 1 and accelerator drum 9) which are engaged with each other. The brake drum 1 is also connected to a disc 6 and spring 8 within a chamber 7. When braking, the brake drum 1 engages a wheel 2 causing rotation of a rod which in turn rotates the disc 6, causing it to ride up grooves 7 and resulting in the spring being compressed, and thereby providing braking. When accelerating / starting up however, accelerator drum 9 can be engaged with the wheel 2 instead and the energy stored in the spring 8 released to accelerate the wheel 2. Instead or in addition to the energy being stored by a spring mechanism 8, gas could be compressed so as to store the energy.
Description
ENERGY SAVING BRAKE
This invention relates to an energy saving brake Conventional brakes slow down vehicles with the energy being dissipated in the process.
This invention relates to a brake system that slows a turning wheel and converts the energy (kinetic) of movement into stored energy (potential) which can be used later to turn the wheel. This invention has been described in potential use with a bicycle but it may apply to other vehicles.
According to the present invention there is provided a pair of small drums (brake drum plus accelerator drum) are used in place of brake blocks, From the brake drum extends a telescopic rod, the opposite end of the rod is attached to a disc, which is in turn connected to a spring, the disc and spring are contained within a chamber, the disc interacts with the inner wall ofthe chamber which is threaded to allow it to travel up and down the chamber on its rotation. Rotation of the rod and disc during braking will cause the disc to travel up the chamber leading to compression of the spring. This resistance serves as a brake to the spinning parts and hence the wheel.
When the spring uncoils, this forces the disc down and to rotate in the opposite direction together with the rod and brake drum. The brake drum is also connected like a cog to an accelerator drum. This converts the backwards rotation of the brake drum to forward rotation of the accelerator drum causing the wheel to rotate forwards when in contact with the wheel rim.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the following accompanying drawings in which: Fig] shows side view of each unit comprised of two drums (one brake and one accelerator). The units are arranged in pairs, one either side of the wheel Fig 2 shows side view of accelerator and brake drum.
Fig 3 shows the brake drum, rod and disc with cross section of chamber containing a sprmg.
Fig 4 shows rotation of rod and disc leading to compression or relaxation of spring (arrows indicate direction of rotation/movement).
Fig 5 shows application of brake drum leading to deceleration of wheel (arrows indicate direction of rotation).
Fig 6 shows application of accelerator drum leading to forward movement of the wheel (arrows indicate direction of rotation).
RefeTng to the drawings e brake uut comprses 2 pared dnms 1 and 9 connected to a disc 6 that is In contact with a spring 8 which is retained within a Dreaded chamber 7 by means of a rod 4.
Movement of the brake drum (which is both free to move towards or away from the wheel rim and is free to rotate) towards a moving wheel rim leads to rotation of the brake drum. As each unit is paired then the same process is followed on the opposite side of the wheel by the second unit as in figure 1.
The brake drum 1 transmits rotation to the rod 4. The rod is in contact with the spring 8 via a disc 6 at their interface as in figure 2. The spring is retained within a 7 chamber and has the ability to be compressed or relax. The internal surface of the chamber is threaded and the outer circumference of the disc is in contact with it. The disc glides between the threaded surface which guides it towards or away from the spring depending on the direction of rotation. The rod will telescope in and out to facilitate this movement (or the rod can be of fixed length and allow the disc to slide up and down its length).
On rotation of the rod the thread will guide the rod and disc into the chamber and compress the spring as shown in figure 3. If the potential energy generated by compression of the spring is released then the rod will be pushed down and will rotate in the opposite direction as determined by the thread of the chamber.
Once the brake drum is applied to the surface of the spinning wheel rim then rotation of the brake drum and rod occurs as shown in figure 5. This rotation encounters resistance as it compresses the spring (refer to figure 4). This resistance will tend to slow down the rotation of the brake disc and by its contact with the wheel rim, the wheel. This energy is stored within the (now) coiled spring.
Application of the accelerator drum 9 will move the brake drum away from the wheel rim and bring the accelerator drum in contact with the wheel rim. The compressed spring will tend to push down the disc and by its threaded contact with the inner chamber will also rotate in the opposite direction to that of braking. This rotation is transmitted to the rod and brake drum. The brake drum and accelerator drum work as two cogs 3. The reverse rotation of the brake drum is therefore converted to forward rotation of the accelerator drum and by contact with the wheel rim, forward rotation of the wheel as shown in figure 6. The joint in the rod 5 allows it to be displaced towards or away from the wheel and still rotate whilst at an angle during acceleration or braking.
The enclosed chamber could also use compressed air harnessed from the above process instead of or as well as a compressed spring as a source of potential energy. r
