Abstract
A window frame which can accommodate two different forms of glazing bead 5 has three formations 7, 8, 9, formed on the frame, preferably within a channel 6, for cooperation with the glazing beads. One pair of formations 7, 9 is used to mount one form of bead, figure 1, preferably having corresponding leg 11 and hook 12 formations and a second pair of formations 8, 9 to mount a second form of bead (figure 2) preferably having corresponding foot (16) and abutment face (17) formations on a single leg (15).
Description
WINI)OW AND DOOR ASSEMBLIES This invention relates to window and door
assembles and other building structures of the kind incorporating beading which acts to hold glazed units or glass or other panel-shaped parts in position.
In particular, the invention is concerned with such an assembly or structure, hereinafter referred to as a structure of the kind specified, in which the beading is secured to a mounting part of the structure by interengageable formations, the beading having two such formations arranged to engage, respectively, two formations on the mounting part in order to hold the beading 1() in position.
Generally two different forms of beading are used in such structures.
One form has a leg with a foot portion which is arranged to cooperate with a groove in the mounting part, and an abutment face which is arranged to engage a face of the mounting part in order to hold the beading in position. Another form has a leg with a foot portion which is arranged to cooperate with a groove in the mounting part, and a hook-like formation which is arranged to receive a projection on the mounting part in order to hold We beading in place.
A disadvantage of conventional structures is that two different forms of mounting part have to be provided in order to cater for the two different fonns of beading, and this is inconvenient for manufacturers and installers, and uneconomical.
The object of Me present invention is to eliminate ibis disadvantage.
According to the invention there is provided in or for a structure of the kind specified comprising a mounting part for a beading which is provided with three Connations, a first such formation and a second such formation being formed and arranged for engagement, respectively, with two corresponding Connations provided on a first form of beading to attach such first form of beading to the mounting part, a third such tonnation and the said second such fonnation being formed and arranged for engagement, respectively, with two corresponding Connations provided on a second form of beading to attach such second form of beading to the mounting part.
Only one form of mounting part is therefore needed to cater for two fonns of beading, the second formation being used for securing both forms of beading and the first or third formation being used depending on which form of beading is fitted to the mounting part.
The mounting part preferably comprises a channel upon which the first, second and third formations arc provided. The first fond of beading preferably comprises a leg having an outwardly extending foot and a hooklike formation.
The second form of beading preferably comprises a leg having a foot portion of rounded cross-section, the leg being formed to provide an abutment face.
The second formation preferably comprises a projection formed on the mounting part and engageable either by a hook-like formation or an abutment face on a beading so that the mounting part can be used with both fonns of beading described in detail above. For the same purpose the first formation is preferably a groove arranged to receive a foot portion provided on a leg of said hrst form of beading and the third formation is preferably a groove arranged to receive a foot portion of a leg provided on said second form of beading.
In accordance with a further feature of the invention the beading may be provided with a resiliently deformable element for engagement with the mounting part. This feature is primarily intended to be used in a beading which is only retained in position by the formations referred to when it is acting on a I O glazed unit or glass or other panel-like part, the said element being arranged to act together with the interengageable formations to hold the beading in place when there is no glazed unit, glass or other panel-like part in the structure.
The element may in addition, or alternatively, be arranged to provide a weatherproof seal between the mounting part and the beading.
In a preferred embodiment the element is provided on beading of the above described form having a]eg and an abutment face. The element is prcfrably in the form of a flap.
The invention will now be described, by of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG 1 is a cross-sectional view through part of a preferred form of window assembly according to the invention showing a first form of beading fitted to the assembly, and FIG 2 is a similar view showing a second form of beading fitted to the assembly.
The drawings show a window assembly formed from extruded plastics profiles which ace assembled to provide an outer frame I intended to be mounted in an aperture in a building, and an irmer Rams or sash 2 which is fitted with a glazed unit 3. The edge of the glazed unit is received in a channel defined by an integral part 4 of the sash 2 and a beading 5. The sash 2 provides a mounting part for the beading and this mounting part comprises a channel 6 provided with three Connations.
There is a first formation 7 comprising a rectangular section groove which faces in a direction away from the face of the glazed unit, a second formation 9 comprising a projection having an abutment facing towards the glazed unit, and a third formation 8 comprising a rounded section groove which faces in the same direction as the groove comprising the first formation.
Figure I shows the window assembly fitted with a first form of beading comprising a leg 10 having an outwardly extending foot 11 and a hook-lile formation 12. The beading is formed as a resiliently deformable plastic extrusion. Seals 13, 14 are provided between the part 4 of the sash and the beading 5 and the respective opposite faces of the glazed unit 3. To glaze the window sash the glazed unit 3 is first located in position against the seal 13 and s then with the seal 14 in place, the beading 5 is secured to the mounting part of the sash by first engaging the foot 11 with the groove 7 and then slightly deforming the beading to engage the hook-like formation 12 with the projection 9. The beading therefore presses against the glazed unit 3 Through the seal].4 in order to hold the glazed unit in position.
Figure 2 shows the sash window assembly fitted with a second iorm of beading 5 which comprises a leg 15 having a foot portion 16 of rounded cross- section, the leg 15 being formed to provide an abutment face 17. Seals 18, 19 are provided between the glazed unit 3 and the part 4 of the sash and the beading 5.
To glaze the assembly the glazed unit is placed in position against the seal 18 and then, with the seal 19 in place, the beading 5 is fitted by engaging the foot portion of 16 of the leg 15 in the groove 8 which is complementarily shaped, the abutment face 17 coming into contact with the projection 9 and as a result causing the beading to be pressed against Ike glazed unit through the seal 19.
The assembly is delivered in an unglazed state to the site where it is to be installed, and conveniently the beading is temporarily fitted to the assembly.
The first for.m-of beading shown in Figure I is self-securing with the foot 11 and the hook-like formation 12 engaged with the groove 7 and the projection 9. On the other hand the second form of beading shown in Figure 2 does not have this characteristic and tends to fall out of the channel 6 and may be lost in transit. To prevent this happening the beading is formed with a resiliently deformable Hap arranged to engage the base of the channel in such a way as to maintain the foot portion 15 in engagement with the groove 7 with the abutment face 17 in contact with the projection 9. This flap also acts as a sealing eienent between the sash and the beading.
The flap is extruded onto the beading immediately after extrusion of the beading itself and is made more flexible and resiliently deformable than the beading.
Whilst in this application the beading 5 is mounted in a sash 2, the beading 5 (of either type disclosed herein) may of course be mounted in any desired frame member provided with a suitable channel 6. Suitable types of frame include outerframes, transom millions, internal and external beaded casement sashes, tilt and turn sashes, inward and outward opening door sashes and nidrials.
It is of course to be understood that the invention is not to be restricted to the details of the above embodiments Welch are described by way of example only.
