Abstract

A cutting tool 1 comprising a body 3 having a recess 5 , a first cutting member 10 and a second cutting member 11 , the first and the second cutting members 10, 11 being located in the recess 5 . Preferably, the cutting members 10, 11 are circular blades which rotate in opposite directions relative to each other.

Description

A CUTTING TOOL
There are numerous cutting tools available, particularly for use in gardening. One of the most popular types of cutting tool for use in the garden are secateurs. However, many users are unable to use such cutting tools effectively for a number of reasons. These may include conditions or illnesses which effect the use of their hands, for example arthritis, tendonitis, eczema or other problems with fingers and thumbs.
It can therefore be appreciated that there exists a need to provide a cutting tool which is easy to use. The present invention seeks to provide an improved cutting tool.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a cutting tool comprising a body having a recess, a first cutting member and a second cutting member, the first and the second cutting members being located in the recess.
Preferably, the first and second cutting members are powered.
Conveniently, the first and second cutting members comprise first and second circular blades respectively.
Advantageously, the first and second circular blades may he rotated in opposite directions relative to each other.
Preferably the tool is electrically powered.
Conveniently, the tool is powered by an internal combustion engine.
Advantageously, the tool further comprises a handle portion.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying figures in which: FIGURE 1 is a schematic illustration of a cutting tool in accordance with the present invention; and FIGURE 2 is a view of the power tool shown in figure 1 with part of its casing removed.
Turning to figure 1, the cutting tool is shown generally at 1 comprising a handle 2 and a head 3. The handle 2 is shaped to form a series of indentations so that it may easily grasped by a user. The handle 2 also has a trigger which activates the cutting tool 1 as will be described below.
Also, the handle 2 contains a number of batteries (not shown) to power the tool 1. The head 3 comprises a casing and is substantially oval in outline, having substantially planar opposed external surfaces. Located on one side of the head 3 there is a recess 5 comprising an opening 6 in the edge of the head 3 leading to an open area 7 through the head 3. The opening 6 is defined by two prong-like points 8 and 9 of the casing of the head 3. Within the recess 5 there is provided a first cutting member 10 and a second cutting member 11. The first and the second cutting members 10, 11 are substantially disc shaped and will be described in more detail below.
Turning to figure 2 the cutting tool 1 is shown with one surface of the casing of the head 3 removed. The first and second cutting members 10, 11 can clearly be seen and comprise metal discs with cutting teeth at their peripheral edge. A segment of the cutting edge of each cutting member 10, 11 extends into the open area 7 of the recess 5. As indicated by the arrows, the first and second cutting members 10, 11 turn in opposed directions so that the segments of their cutting edges which extend into the recess 5 move away from the opening 6.
The cutting members 10, 11 are turned by an electric motor (not shown) which is powered by the batteries in the handle 2. The trigger 4 on the handle 2 is used to actuat the electric motor. In use, material to be cut, such as branches and the like, are manocovred between the points 8 and 9 defining the opening 5 to the recess 6 and thus into the open area 7. The material is then cut by the action of the cutting teeth arranged on the peripheral edge of each of the first and second cutting members 10, 11. The material will be cut either by one or the other of the first and second cutting members 10, 11, or may be brought into the area 12 directly between the cutting members and so cut by troth cutting member 10, 11 simultaneously.
If the cutting members 10, 11 become damaged or if blunt through use, they may be replaced. Also a longer handle may be attached to the handle 2 (including a further trigger) in order to extend the range of use of the power tool 1.
The substantially enclosed nature of the power tool 1 ensures that accidents arising from its use are minimised.
Also, the recess 5 and the prongs 8 and 9 may be used to manipulate and manoeuvre material to be cut.
