A machine for trimming the edges of lawns comprising a trimming device 11 of the type described in Specification 966,428 has a frame consisting of transverse bars 15, 16 and longitudinal bars 20, 21. The wheels or rollers 35-37 of the machine are mounted on inverted U-shaped members, e.g. member 39 (Fig. 3), which are pivotably mounted on a longitudinal shaft 42. Hence the machine may be kept horizontal regardless of the slope of the lawn. The member 39 may be prevented from pivotal movement by a locking device 44 which comprises a pair of arms 47 which snugly engage the outer sides of the member 39 and a cross-bar 48 which engages the rear edges of the member. The trimming device is pivotally movable about a shaft 28 driven by an internal combustion or electric engine via belt and pulley mechanisms, and comprises a casing 24, a cutter 25 driven from the shafts 28 via belt 26, and a scraper 62 mounted on the casing and extending forwardly of the cutter. The operative depth of the cutter may be adjusted by adjustment of roller 22. In an alternative embodiment the scraper 70 (Fig. 6) is supported on an articulated arm 73, and may be locked in either of the positions shown by a member 77 which is slidable along the arm over the articulation. The scraper is retained in its inoperative positon by the toe portion 82 of the member 77. The machine may also include a horizontal cutter connected directly to the shaft, which cutter is mounted on the casing. Alternatively the horizontal cutter 89 may be mounted in a frame including rollers 107, 108 (Fig. 11), which frame is pivotally connected to the casing by arm 102. The cutter in this latter embodiment is driven by the cutter shaft 85 via a sprocket and chain mechanism. The frame may be locked in a particular position relative to the cutter casing 24 by an adjustable device 109. The machine may be propelled manually or may be driven by the engine, the drive being transmitted to the front wheel via a belt and pulley mechanism.
