Description
WINDOW GLAZING SYSTEM
This invention concerns a window and a glazing system for mounting a glazing unit in a window frame of wood or wood substitute.
Glazing systems are known for supporting sealed double glazed units within an inner frame formed from extruded aluminium or plastics sections which is then mounted in a surrounding outer frame of timber. Disadvantages of such systems include the untraditional appearance of the two frames being of different materials and, in the case of aluminium sub- frames, there is the possibility of condensation forming on the inner surfaces of the inner frame leading to fungal growth and deterioration of the main timber frame.
In order to create a traditional appearance for a window where the window frame is of timber, it is customary to locate a glazing unit in a rebate within the main timber frame and then to apply, towards the outer edge of the rebate, a timber bead, resilient sealing strips or flexible substances being used to form a seal around the glazing unit, against the frame and bead. With this arrangement, however, the timber bead is fixed in place using pins which pass through the bead and into the main frame at spaced intervals of 1 Smm or so. This presents a further disadvantage in that the microporous coatings currently used to dress and protect such timber frames and beads, once ruptured by a fixing pin, can, over a period of time, allow the ingress of moisture leading to discoloration or other deterioration of the timber. Also, the need to pin the bead all around the window frame is labour intensive and requires the pins to be sunken and then filler added. This increases the time needed to assemble such a window, and the filler is often visible and unsightly.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to create the traditional appearance of a glazing unit mounted in a timber frame where no other structural materials are visible, but with the avoidance of the use of pins externally applied through the bead.
According to the present invention there is providing a glazing system for mounting a glazing unit in a window frame of wood or wood substitute, the frame having a rebate around the inner edge of its outer face to receive the glazing unit, the system comprising a plate to be fixed to the frame within the rebate, a tongue extending inwardly from the plate, a bead of wood or wood substitute having a groove to be pressed over the tongue to fix the bead within the rebate, and at least one sealing strip to be disposed between the bead and an outer face of a glazing unit located within the rebate, the assembly being such that the plate is concealed within the rebate by the bead after the bead is fitted.
The sealing strip may be of a resilient material, and the bead may have a further groove into which the material of the sealing strip may intrude when the bead is fitted.
A further sealing strip may be provided to become disposed between an inner face of the glazing unit and an adjacent face of the rebate.
The further sealing strip may be of a resilient material, and the adjacent face of the rebate may have a groove into which the material of the further sealing strip may intrude when the bead is fitted.
The plate and its tongue may have an L-shaped cross-section.
The plate may be elongate and have its tongue extending inwardly from a longitudinal edge thereof, and a further tongue likewise extending outwardly from an opposed longitudinal edge such that the plate has a Zshaped cross-section and is symmetrical about a longitudinal centre line of the plate.
The plate may be attachable to the frame within the rebate, by pins.
The plate may be attachable to the frame within the rebate, by an adhesive substance.
The plate may be provided in lengths which align to form a continuous plate around the frame.
The plate may be provided in separate lengths and spaced apart around the frame.
The or each tongue of the plate may have an undulating surface to grip at least one wall of the groove in the bead when the bead is pressed over the tongue.
The bead may be of a material which visually matches that of the frame.
Further according to the present invention there is provided a window having a window frame of wood or wood substitute with a rebate around the inner edge of its outer face, and a glazing unit located in the rebate, and mounted therein by a glazing system as aforesaid.
Embodiments of the invention will now describe, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is an interior elevation of a window made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an exterior elevation of the window of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the window taken on line III-III of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of a further embodiment of the invention and Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of a part of a glazing system of the present invention.
Referring now to the drawings, it will be seen that the window 10 comprises, in this example, a single fixed light 11 positioned within a surrounding rectangular wooden main frame 12. It will be understood that the window might comprise a plurality of lights some of which might be fixed and others might be opening lights.
As can be seen from Fig. 3, the frame 12 has a rebate 14 around the inner edge of its outer face. A double glazed sealed unit 30 is located in the rebate and supported therein by spacers one of which is shown at 31. This may be a continuous spacer strip extending around the entire rebate 14, or alternatively individual spacers arranged at intervals as required.
An inner sealing strip 13 of a resilient material is disposed around the rebate and sits between an outer face thereof and the adjacent inner face of the double glazed unit 30.
As can be seen from Fig. 3, the outer face of the rebate preferably includes a groove such that when the double glazed unit 30 is pressed against the sealing strip 13, the material thereof will intrude into the groove 15 both to form a location key for the resilient strip and to prevent the ingress of moisture between the strip 13 and the outer face of the rebate 14 of the frame.
Further in accordance with the invention, a plate 16 is pinned at 17 to the frame 12 within the rebate 14. The plate 16 may be provided in lengths which align to form a continuous plate around the entire frame 12 or may be provided as separate plate spaced apart around the frame.
The or each plate 16 includes an inwardly extending tongue 18 which with the main part of the plate 16 forms an L-shaped cross-section.
Further in accordance with the invention, a bead 25 preferably of the same material of the frame 12 or at least as a wood or wood substitute having a similar or contrasting appearance as the frame 12, according to aesthetic requirements, has a groove 19 by which the bead 25 may be pressed as a tight fit onto the tongue or tongues 18.
The bead 25 has a further groove 20 such that, when the bead is fitted, a further sealing strip 21 of a resilient material, which is located between the outer face of the glazing unit 30 and the adjacent inner face of the bead 25, may intrude into the groove 20, again to provide a mechanical location key and to prevent the ingress of moisture from outside the glazing system into the rebate 14.
It will be seen therefore that with a glazing system as described, the main frame 12 may be fixed in position in a wall opening, whereupon the glazing unit 30 may be installed against the sealing strip 13, and then the bead 25 is applied against the external sealing strip 21 and pressed onto the tongue 18 to finish the assembly.
The fit of the bead 25 over the tongue 18 is sufficiently tight to retain the assembly in place but to allow the bead to be prised off subsequently for replacement of the glazing unit 30 if required.
It will be appreciated that in the finished assembly the plate 16 and pins 17 are concealed within the rebate and the traditional appearance of a window made entirely of timber is achieved, there being no metallic parts exposed to cause condensation.
Also, since the bead 25 is clamped down onto the tongue 18 throughout its tenth, the bead is therefore uniformly retained against the frame thus avoiding ingress of moisture which can occur in conventional pinned systems.
Although the pins 17 will penetrate a microporous coating on the frame 12, nevertheless they are enclosed within the glazing system and thus prevented from causing deterioration of the timber, all moisture being prevented from entering the rebate. If required, a thin sealing strip may be provided between the frame 12 and the outer part of the bead 25 to ensure that no moisture can penetrate the rebate.
However, in some cases it may be required to provide means to allow water to escape from the rebate and so the tongue 18, at its base, may be bored to provide drain holes at spaced intervals. Any water accumulating in the rebate may thus drain through the interface between the bead 25 and the frame.
Referring now to Fig. 4, in an alternative embodiment, the L-shaped plate 16 and tongue 18 are replaced by a plate 40 in the form of an elongate strip having a tongue 41 extending inwardly from one longitudinal edge thereof and a further tongue 42 extending outwardly from the opposite longitudinal edge thereof to form a Z-shaped cross section. Thus, the intermediate part 43 of the strip between the tongues 41 and 42, when positioned in the rebate as shown in Fig. 4, assumes an inclined attitude. In this case therefore, if any moisture should enter the rebate 14 from the glazing unit, it is permitted to drain outwardly towards the tongue 41 which may incorporate drain apertures at spaced intervals for this purpose.
In this example also, the plate 40 is pinned as at 44 into the main frame 12.
In this example also, spacers are required to support the glazing unit along its bottom edge. These may take the form of wedges which sit upon the inclined surface 43, or rectangular sectioned pieces which are located between separate plates 40 arranged at spaced intervals around the frame.
It will be understood that should it be required to avoid any penetration of the frame 12, the pins 17, 44, may be omitted and the plates 16, 40 attached to the frame by an adhesive substance.
Referring now to Fig. 5, it is preferable for the plate 40 to be formed with a Z-shaped cross-section which is symmetrical about a longitudinal centre line of the plate. In this case, an inclined central part 50 is disposed between flattened portions 51 and tongues 52 and 53 arranged in a manner similar to the tongues 41 and 42 shown in Fig. 4. By providing the plate in a symmetrical form in this manner, it may be used with either one of the tongues 52 and 53 disposed to receive the bead 25, the other serving to locate the plate in the correct position against the outer face of the rebate 14. Drain holes are shown at 54.
The outer and inner faces respectively of the tongues 52 and 53 may be undulated or grooved and slightly over-size with respect to the width of the groove in the bead, thus to form a tight fit within the groove when the bead is fitted. The flattened parts 51 serve, on the outer side of the plate, to provide an even surface to be located against the inner face of the rebate, while the opposed flattened part 51 may serve to locate a spacer to support the glazing unit 30.
The plates of Figures 3, 4 and 5 are preferably formed by aluminium extrusion or from plastics, and may be of different sizes to accommodate rebates of various depths.
