Description

GLAZING ASSEMBLY This invention relates to a glazing assembly and to a bead retaining member for use in a glazing assembly.
With the advent of fully finished timber windows there has been a need for an installation method that would securely fasten the side and top timber beads to the exterior perimeter of a window without the use of metal fixings. The problem with metal fixings is thatt they pierce the prefinished timber coating thus reducing the guarantee that the paint manufacturers give for unpierced surfaces to the joinery manufactures.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a glazing assembly comprising a window frame, a glazing panel mounted in the window frame, and a plurality of non-metal bead retaining members located along at least one edge of the panel, each bead retaining member comprising a tongue which extends between the edge of the panel and the frame for spacing the edge of the panel from the frame by the thickness of the tongue and a bead retaining portion which extends forwardly of the panel for engagement with, and retention of, a common wooden glazing bead extending along the said panel edge, the bead retaining portion not penetrating any external surface of the bead.
The invention also provides a bead retaining member for use in a glazing assembly as above.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing whose single figure is a transverse cross-section of a glazing assembly taken through one vertical side edge of a rectangular window frame.
In this specification the terms "inward" and "outward" and similar expressions refer to the directions respectively towards and away from the centre of the glazing panel.
Referring to the drawing the glazing assembly comprises a rectangular window frame 10 with a glazing panel 12 mounted in the frame. In this embodiment the panel 12 is a sealed double glazing unit with inner and outer glass panes 14, 16 respectively.
A plurality of non-metal bead retaining members 18 are located along the edge of the glazing unit 12.
Preferable each member 18 is extruded from a rigid plastics material such as PVC. Typically the members are 50mm wide, as measured in the direction along the length of the edge of the unit 12 (i.e. normal to the plane of the figure), and are spaced at intervals of 250mm. However, as the members are preferably provided in extruded or injection moulded lengths they can be cut on site to any desired length and fitted at any desired spacing. Each member 18 is fixed to the frame 10 by a respective anchoring pin 20.
Each bead retaining member 18 comprises a tongue 22 which extends between the edge 24 of the unit 12 and the frame 10 for spacing the edge of the unit from the frame by the thickness of the tongue. In this embodiment the tongue 22 is 3mm thick. This provides a 3mm space between the edge of the glazing unit 12 and the window frame 10, as recommended by the United Kingdom Glass and Glazing Federation. The tongue 22 has a shallow channel 25 between its inner and outer edges to avoid trapping any moisture which may collect at the edges of the unit 12 and to allow such moisture to escape down and drain away under a ventilated bead (not shown) along the bottom of the window frame. The glazing unit 12 is spaced from the rear of the frame 10 by a self adhesive or press fit glazing gasket 27.
Each bead retaining member 18 further comprises a bead retaining portion 26 which extends forwardly of the unit 12 for engagement with, and retention of, a pre-finished wooden glazing bead 28 extending substantially fully along the exterior edge of the unit 12 adjacent the frame 10. In particular, the bead retaining portion 26 includes a first inwardly extending flange 30 which engages in a channel 32 in the underside of the bead and a further inwardly extending flange 34 located between the rear surface 36 of the bead 28 and the exterior surface 38 of the glazing panel. The flange 30 has a pair of reversely directed barbs 40 for biting into and gripping the interior surface of the channel 32 of the bead 28. Similarly, the flange 34 has a single such barb 42 for biting into and gripping the channel 48.
These barbs ensure that the bead is positively gripped by the member 18.
It will be understood that the bead 28 is a single elongate member extending substantially the full length of the relevant edge of the unit 12, and is retained in position in common by all the members 18 fixed along that edge which engage the bead at spaced locations. It will be seen that the bead retaining portions 26 do not engage any exterior or exposed surface of the bead 28, and solely holds the bead in place by engagement with the hidden bottom and rear surfaces.
The glazing assembly further includes a sealing gasket 44 inserted between the rear surface 36 of the bead and the exterior surface 38 of the glazing panel, above the flange 34. This is a single one-piece flexible lubricated gasket extending the full length of the bead 28, and includes a tongue 46 which fits into a recess 48 in the rear surface 36 of the bead.
In the embodiment shown the front to rear width of the bead retaining member 18 is about 36mm, suitable for use with a 20mm wide double glazing unit 12 and a bead 28 with a front to rear width of about 18mm. However, the member 18 may be manufactured with other dimensions to suit other widths of unit 12 and bead 28.
As stated above, the drawing shows a cross-section through one vertical side edge of the window frame, but the same construction may also be used along the other vertical side edge and along the horizontal top edge.
The construction is preferably not used along the bottom edge of the window frame as timber is normally unsuitable - in that case it is preferred to use, for example, an aluminium section.
The advantage of the construction described above is that the timber side and top beads are locked in place without the external surfaces of the beads being penetrated by mechanical fixings. Further, the members 26 hold in position the side packers that are required to ensure the double glazed unit remains in position in spite of the movement of the timber window. Finally, even if the bead 28 is removed, the glazing unit 12 cannot be taken out of the window until the members 18 have also been removed, providing added security.

Claims (7)

1. A glazing assembly comprising a window frame, a glazing panel mounted in the window frame, and a plurality of non-metal bead retaining members located along at least one edge of the panel, each bead retaining member comprising a tongue which extends between the edge of the panel and the frame for spacing the edge of the panel from the frame by the thickness of the tongue and a bead retaining portion which extends forwardly of the panel for engagement with, and retention of, a common wooden glazing bead extending along the said panel edge, the bead retaining portion not penetrating any external surface of the bead.
2. A glazing assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the bead retaining portion comprises an inwardly extending flange which engages in a channel in the underside of the bead.
3. A glazing assembly as claimed in claim 2, wherein the bead retaining portion also comprises a further inwardly extending flange between the rear surface of the bead and the exterior surface of the glazing panel.
4. A glazing assembly as claimed in claim 2 or 3, wherein the or each inwardly extending flange has at least one reversely directed barb for gripping of the bead.
5. A glazing assembly as claimed in claim 2, 3 or 4, wherein the bead retaining member is made of a rigid plastics material.
6. A glazing assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, further including a sealing gasket inserted between the rear surface of the bead and the exterior surface of the glazing panel above the bead retaining portion.
7. A bead retaining member for use in a glazing assembly as claimed in any preceding claim.
7. A glazing assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the tongue has a channel between its inner and outer edges to permit drainage of moisture along the edge of the glazing panel.
8. A glazing assembly substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
9. A bead retaining member for use in a glazing assembly as claimed in any preceding claim. Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows CLAIMS 1. A glazing assembly comprising a window frame, a glazing panel mounted in the window frame, and a wooden glazing bead located along at least one top or side edge of the panel, characterised by a plurality of bead retaining members of rigid plastics material located along the said at least one top or side edge of the panel with the wooden glazing bead extending in common along the bead retaining members, each bead retaining member comprising a tongue which extends between the edge of the panel and the frame for spacing the edge of the panel from the frame and a bead retaining portion which extends forwardly of the panel for engagement with, and retention of, the wooden glazing bead, the bead retaining portion not penetrating any external surface of the bead and comprising at least one inwardly extending flange having at least one barb biting into a hidden surface of the bead to grip the bead.
2. A glazing assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the said at least one inwardly extending flange engages in a channel in the underside of the bead and the at least one barb bites into the interior surface of the channel.

A glazing assembly as claimed in claim 2, wherein the bead retaining portion includes a second inwardly extending flange located between the rear surface of the bead and the exterior surface of the glazing panel, the second flange also having at least one barb biting into the said rear surface of the bead.
4. A glazing assembly as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, further including a sealing gasket inserted between the rear surfaces of the bead and the exterior surface of the glazing panel above the bead retaining portion.
5. A glazing assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the tongue has a channel between its inner and outer edge to permit drainage of moisture along the edge of the glazing panel 6. A glazing assembly substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
