Abstract

A ramp assembly is described, including:- <SL> <LI>a frame structure (12); <LI>a first ramp member (22); <LI>a second ramp member (24); </SL> guide means (30, 40) to guide the ramp members for movement relative to the frame structure between a stored position in which one of the ramp members is positioned generally above the ramp member to a fully extended position in which the ramp members extend away from the frame structure to provide a continuative ramp surface; and ```means for effecting movement of the ramp members between their stored and fully extended positions, ```wherein at least part of movement of the second ramp member is derived from the movement of the first member. Also including a housing for accomodating the ramp when not in use. The housing is adapted for installation into a recess in the floor of a vehicle, whereby the upper surface of the housing provides the floor of the vehicle when the ramp is deployed.

Description of Invention
This invention relates to a ramp assembly which may be utilised for facilitating access, e.g. by mobility-impaired persons, to a passenger carrying vehicle, such as, for example, a bus.
More particularly the invention relates to a ramp assembly adapted for installation into a floor of a vehicle, the ramp assembly having two ramp members, which are able to move outwardly of the vehicle from a stored position, in which the ramp members are accommodated with one of the ramp members positioned generally above the other ramp member, to a fully extended position in which the ramp members extend outwardly from the vehicle and a remote end of the outermost ramp member is able to rest upon an adjacent ground surface, such as, for example, a pavement. In the fully extended position the ramp members provide a continuative ramp surface which can be used by mobility-impaired persons to access the vehicle.
Ramp assemblies have been proposed having a single ramp member which can be moved in relation to a frame structure (which frame structure is adapted to be installed in a floor structure of a vehicle by a door) between a stored or retracted position, and an extended position in which it extends outwardly and downwardly from the vehicle to reach an adjacent surface.
A single ramp member, when retracted has to occupy as much space as the ramp is long, which can give rise to problems.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a ramp assembly, including: a frame structure; a first ramp member; a second ramp member; guide means guiding the ramp members for movement relative to the frame structure between a stored position, in which one of the ramp members is positioned generally above the other ramp member, to a fully extended position in which the ramp members extend away from the frame structure to provide a continuative ramp surface; and means for effecting movement of the ramp members between their stored and fully extended positions, wherein at least a part of movement of the second ramp member is derived from the movement of the first member.
In at least a part of the movement of the ramp members, the second ramp member may move at a greater rate than the first ramp member.
In this way, the first and second ramp members can move between the stored position in which one of the ramp members is positioned generally above the other ramp member and the fully extended position where the ramp members provide a continuative ramp surface, with the second ramp member being positioned remote from the frame structure.
In a first part of the movement of the ramp members, the first and second ramp members may move at substantially the same rate and in a second part of the movement the first and second ramp members may continue to move, with the second ramp member moving at a greater rate than the first ramp member.
The guide means may include a first guide means carried by the frame structure and guiding the first ramp member for its movement relative to the frame structure.
The guide means may also include second guide means moveable with the first ramp member and guiding the second ramp member for its movement relative thereto.
The ramp assembly may include a first carrier means connected to the first ramp member and moveable along the first guide means. The first carrier means may include first carrier members, one provided at each side of the first ramp member.
The ramp assembly may also include a second carrier means connected to the second ramp member and moveable along the second guide means. The second carrier means may include second carrier members, one provided at each side of the second ramp member.
The first guide means may include respective first guide members provided one at each side of the frame structure.
The second guide means may include respective second guide members also provided one at each side of the second ramp member.
The first carrier members and the second carrier members may each include at least one, preferably two, rolling element(s) moveable along their respective guide members. Alternatively, each may be slidable along their respective guide member, such as, for example, a slide bearing.
The means for effecting movement of the ramp members may include driving means for effecting movement of the first ramp member and transmission means for effecting movement of the second ramp member, which movement is derived from the movement of the first ramp member.
A driving means and transmission means may be provided at both sides of the vehicle.
The driving means may effect movement of the first carrier means along the first guide means.
The driving means may include: two first rotary elements supported in fixed relation to the frame structure for rotational movement about respective axes and spaced from one another in a direction in which the ramp members move; and a first flexible driving element entrained around the two first rotary elements and defining first and second runs thereof; wherein the first ramp member is fixed one of the runs of the flexible driving element and one of the first rotary elements is drivable by motor means to effect rotation thereof.
The transmission means may effect movement of the second carrier means along the second guide means.
The transmission means may include: two second rotary elements supported in fixed relation to the first ramp member for rotational movement about respective axes and spaced from one another in a direction in which the ramp members move; a second flexible driving element entrained around the two second rotary elements and defining first and second runs thereof; and means to cause the second flexible driving element to advance along an endless path around the second rotary elements during movement of the first ramp member, the second ramp member being connected to one run of the second flexible element.
The means to cause the second flexible driving element to advance along an endless path around the second rotary elements may include: a rack connected to the frame structure; and a pinion supported in fixed relation to the first ramp member for rotation about an axis and engageable with the rack, wherein the pinion is in driving relationship with one of the second rotary elements, such that movement of the pinion along the rack causes the second flexible driving element to advance along the endless path around the second rotary elements.
Alternatively the means to cause the second flexible driving element to advance along an endless path around the second rotary elements may include: stop means connected to the frame structure and engageable with a formation provided one run of the second flexible driving element, the second ramp member being connected to the other run of the second flexible element.
In this way during a first part of movement of the ramp members the motor means causes one of the two first rotary elements to rotate, which in turn causes the first flexible driving element to rotate around the two first rotary elements. This effects movement of the first ramp member and transmission means, at substantially the same rate, until the formation on the first run of the second flexible driving element engages the stop means, thus inhibiting further movement of the first run of the second flexible driving element. Further rotation of the first flexible driving element causes the first ramp member and the two second rotary elements to move relative to the formation on the first run of the second flexible element, which causes the second run of the second flexible element to also move in the same direction. Thus the first ramp member and second ramp member continue to move in the same direction as one another, with the second ramp member moving at a greater rate than the first ramp member.
A part of the first carrier means may be connected to a run of the first flexible driving element.
The two second rotary elements may be supported by a sub-frame, which subframe is connected to the first ramp member.
The sub-frame may include the second guide member.
The stop means may be provided on a third guide means, which third guide means guide the formation on the first run of the second flexible driving element. The third guide means may be an elongate bar or tube, which extends generally in the direction in which the ramp members move. The formation on the first run of the second flexible driving element may include an aperture through which the bar or tube passes.
The stop means may be provided by a further formation at an end of the third guide means, which is able to engage the formation on the first run of the second flexible driving element, to inhibit further movement of the first run of the second flexible driving element.
The first and second flexible driving elements may be first and second continuous belts, bands or chains, such as, for example, toothed belts, and the first and second rotary elements may be pulleys, toothed sprockets or gears which engage with the first and second flexible driving elements to provide drive therebetween.
An edge of the first ramp member remote from the *ame structure, when the ramp members are in the fully extended position, and an adjacent edge of the second ramp member may be provided with co-operating formations which engage each other, in the fully extended position, to provide a continuative even ramp surface.
An edge of the second ramp member remote from the frame structure, when the ramp members are in the fully extended position, may be provided with a resiliently deformable formation, which is able to deform when the edge of the second ramp member engages an adjacent surface, such as, for example, a pavement.
The frame structure may include an opening through which the ramp members move.
The ramp assembly may include a closure member connected to the frame structure and moveable to close the opening in the frame structure through which the ramp members move. The closure member may be pivotable about an axis extending generally transversely of the direction in which the ramp members move and may be biased to a position in which it closes the opening by a spring.
The closure member may include a third support means to support either or both of the ramp members during movement thereof.
The ramp assembly may be removably accommodated in a housing, the housing being adapted for installation into a recess in a floor of a vehicle and having a cavity for receiving the ramp assembly and an upper surface which provides a floor surface of the vehicle when the frame structure is removed therefrom.
The ramp assembly may be removed from the housing in a direction generally parallel to the floor surface of the vehicle. (i.e. outwardly, laterally away from the vehicle).
In this way the ramp assembly can be removed from the housing, e.g. for service and/or repair, whilst leaving a floor surface in the vehicle which can be used when boarding the vehicle.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view, from above and one side, of a first embodiment of a ramp assembly in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective partly-sectioned view of part of the first embodiment of the ramp assembly, in a stored position; Figure 3 is a perspective view, from one side and above, of first and second ramp members of the first embodiment of the ramp assembly in a fully extended position; Figure 4 shows additional detail to the view shown in figure 3; Figure 5 is an enlarged perspective view of part of the transmission means of the first embodiment of the ramp assembly when the first and second ramp members are in the fully extended position; Figure 6 is a perspective view, from one side and above, of a detail of an outermost part of the first embodiment of the ramp assembly; Figure 7 is a perspective view, from above and one side, of a second embodiment of a ramp assembly in accordance with the present invention; Figure 8 is a perspective partly- sectioned view of part of the second embodiment of the ramp assembly, in a stored position, Figure 9 is a perspective partly-sectioned view of part of the second embodiment of the ramp assembly, in a fully extended position; Figure 10 is a perspective view, from one side and above, of a transmission means of the second embodiment of the ramp assembly; Figure 11 shows additional detail to the view shown in figure 9, and Figure 12 is a perspective view, from above and one side, of the second embodiment of a ramp assembly in a fully extended position.
Referring firstly to figure 1 a first embodiment of a ramp assembly in accordance with the invention is shown generally at 10. The ramp assembly 10 has a frame structure 12 which contains and supports the working parts of the ramp assembly. Also shown in figure 1 is a housing 14 in accordance with the second aspect of the invention, which is configured so as to be installable in a recess in a floor of a vehicle (not shown) adjacent an opening in a side of the vehicle.
The housing 14 has a generally U-shaped peripheral frame with two side members 14a connected at corresponding ends by a transverse member 14b. A further member 14d is also provided at an opposite end of the U-shaped peripheral frame to the transverse member 14b to provide additional strength.
A top plate 16, which is connected to the side members 14a and the transverse member 14b affords a surface flush with an adjacent floor surface of the vehicle when the housing 14 is installed therein. The top plate 16 has a cut out section 16a at an opposite end of the housing 14 to the transverse member 14b; an upper surface 17 of the frame structure 12 is provided with a corresponding section which fits into the section 16a, to provide a continuative floor surface, when the frame structure 12 is installed in the housing 14.
The top plate 16 overhangs the side members 14a and the transverse member 14b to provide a flange with a plurality of spaced apertures 20 through which threaded fasteners or the like can pass to fix the top plate 16 into a floor structure of the vehicle.
The U-shaped peripheral frame of the housing 14 defines a cavity 18, which is shaped so as to receive the frame structure 12. The frame structure 12 S can be inserted into or removed from the cavity 18 in a direction shown by the arrow 19 (i.e. laterally away from the housing 14). The frame structure 12 is held in place in the cavity 18 by threaded fasteners or the like, or a quick release mechanism (not shown).
If it is necessary for the ramp assembly 10 to be serviced or repaired, the frame structure 12 can be removed from the housing 14. With the frame structure 12 removed from the housing 14, the top plate 16 still provides a surface flush with an adjacent floor surface of the vehicle.
Alternatively, if a replacement ramp assembly cannot be installed in the housing 14, whilst the original ramp assembly 12 is being serviced or repaired, a "dummy" ramp assembly (i.e. an assembly having external dimensions to fit into the housing 14, but without any working parts including an upper surface with the same dimensions as the upper surface 17 of the original ramp assembly 12) can be installed. Thus the top plate 16 and the upper surface of the "dummy" ramp assembly provide a continuative floor surface.
The ramp assembly 10 has a first ramp member 22, first guide means 30 (shown in figure 5) carried by the frame structure 12 for guiding the first ramp member 22 for movement relative to the frame structure 12, a second ramp member 24 and second guide means 40 carried by the first ramp member 22 for guiding the second ramp member 24 for movement relative to the first ramp member 22.
Figure 2 also shows a driving means 80 for effecting movement of the first ramp member 22 and transmission means 90 by which movement of the second ramp member 24 is derived from the first ramp member 22. The driving means 80 and the transmission means 90 are provided one at each side of the ramp assembly. The driving means 80 and transmission means 90 will be described in greater detail hereinafter.
In the stored position, both the first and second ramp members 22, 24 lie within the frame structure 12, with the first ramp member 22 positioned generally above the second ramp member 24.
Considering now figures 3 and 4, these show the ramp assembly 10 in a fully extended position where the first and second ramp members 22, 24 provide a continuative ramp surface, which extends through an opening 13 in the frame structure 12, with the second ramp member 24 being positioned remote from the frame structure 12. An edge of the first ramp member 22 remote from the frame structure 12 and an adjacent edge of the second ramp member 24 are provided with co-operating formations 23 and 25 respectively, which, in the fully extended position, engage each other to provide a continuative ramp surface. In this embodiment the co-operating formations are wedge shaped formations which overlap each other when the ramp members 22, 24 are in the fully extended position. An opposite edge of the second ramp member 24, which, in the fully extended position, engages an adjacent surface, such as a pavement surface, is also provided with a resiliently deformable formation 26.
From figure 3 it can be seen that the first ramp member 22 is provided with first carrier means 50 in the form of a pair of first carrier members 51, each of which is provided with a pair of rolling elements 52. The first carrier members 51 are provided one at each side of the first ramp member 22 and are connected by a transverse member 55. The first carrier members 51 are each movable along the respective first guide means 30, which in this embodiment are provided by first guide members 31 (see figure 5) on opposite sides of the frame structure 12.
The second ramp member 24 is also provided with second carrier means in the form of a pair of second carrier members 61. The second carrier members 61 support the second ramp member 24 during movement thereof and are each slidable along the respective second guide means 40, which is provided by a channel section sub-frame 41 as shown in figure 4. The sub frame 41 supports component parts of the transmission means 90, which will be described in greater detail hereinafter, and the carrier members 61 are each slidable along the respective guide members 31.
Some working parts of the ramp assembly 10 have been omitted from figures 3 and 4 to aid clarity. Therefore, the following description is written with reference to figures 2, 3, 4 and 5.
The driving means 80 and transmission means 90 are provided at both sides of the ramp assembly 10. Accordingly only the driving means 80 and transmission means 90 shown in figure 2 will be described hereinafter; the driving means 80 and transmission means 90 on the opposite side of the ramp assembly are a mirror image thereof.
The driving means 80 includes two rotary elements, in the form of toothed sprockets 81a, b, connected to the frame structure 12 for rotational movement about respective axes and spaced from one another in a direction in which the ramp members 22, 24 move. The sprocket 81 a is connected to a part of the frame structure 12 near the transverse member 14b, when the ramp assembly 10 is accommodated in the housing 14, and the sprocket 81b is connected a part of the frame structure 12 remote from the transverse member 14b. A first flexible driving element, in the form of a toothed belt 84, is provided entrained around the sprockets 81a, b. The belt 84 has a first run 85 extending between upper portions of the sprockets 81a, b and a second run 86 extending between lower portions of the sprockets 8 la, b.
The carrier member 51 is fixed to the second run 86 of the belt 84 by a part 56, such that movement of the belt 84 causes the carrier member 51 to move along its corresponding guide member 31, thus moving the first ramp member 22.
The sprocket 81a is in driving relationship with an electric motor 83, through appropriate gearing and a drive shaft 82, such that when the electric motor 83 provides drive to the drive shaft 82, the sprocket 81a rotates thus causing the belt 84 to advance along an endless path around the sprockets 81a, b.
Referring now to figures 3, 4 and 5, the transmission means 90 includes two second rotary elements, in the form of in the form of toothed sprockets 91a, b, connected to the sub-frame 41 for rotational movement about respective axes and spaced from one another in a direction in which the ramp members move.
The sprocket 91a is connected to a part of the sub-frame 41 near the transverse member 14b, when the ramp members 22, 24 are in the stored position, and the sprocket 9 lb is connected a part of the sub-frame 41 remote from the transverse member 14b, when the ramp members 22, 24 are in the stored position.
A second flexible driving element is provided, entrained around the sprockets 91a, b, in the form of a toothed belt 94. The belt 94 has a first run 95 extending between upper portions of the sprockets 91a, b and a second run 96 extending between lower portions of the sprockets 91a, b.
The sprocket 91a is also connected to a part of the first ramp member 22 near the transverse member 14b, when the ramp member 22, 24 are in the stored position, such that movement of the first ramp member 22 effects movement of the sprocket 9 la and thus the transmission means 90.
The carrier member 61 is fixed to the second run 95 of the belt 94, such that movement of the belt 94 causes the carrier member 61 to move along the channel section of the sub-frame 41, thus moving the second ramp member 22 relative to the sub-frame 41.
A cover channel 98, as shown in figure 6, is also provided, as a safety feature, so as to substantially cover each transmission means 90. The cover channel 98 is connected at opposite ends thereof to corresponding ends of each sub-frame 41.
Referring specifically to figure 2 and 4, the ramp assembly 10 also includes stop means 100. The stop means 100 includes a third guide means in the form of an elongate bar 102, which is connected to a part of the frame structure 12 near the transverse member 14b by a connection part 101 and extends away therefrom towards the opening 13, above and substantially parallel to the belt 94. The elongate bar 102 has two concentric sections of substantially the same length; the section near the connection part 101 having a diameter grater than that of the other section. At an end of the elongate bar 102 remote from the connection part 101 there is provided a further formation in the form of a nut 105, which engages a corresponding externally threaded end section on the elongate bar 102. The external dimensions of the nut 105 are larger than the diameter of the section of the elongate bar 102 near the connection pert 101.
Connected to the first run 95 of the belt 94 is a guide part 103. The guide part 103 has an aperture 104, which is shaped so as to receive the elongate bar 102. Thus, movement of the belt 94 in a direction away from the connection part 101 effects movement of the guide part 103 along the elongate bar 102. The diameter of the aperture 104 is such that it cannot pass over the nut 105 or the section ofthe elongate tear 102 near the connection part 101.
The opening 13 of the frame structure is provided with a closure member in the form of a flap 110 which extends across the opening 13 and is pivotable about an axis generally transversely of the direction in which the ramp members 22, 24 move. The flap 110 is biased to a position in which it closes the opening 13 by a spring (not shown). A formation is provided at each side of the flap 110 in the form of a plate 112 which extends substantially perpendicularly away from the flap 110 along respective external sides of the frame structure 12.
Each external side of the frame structure 12 is provided with a projecting formation 114 which engages in an arcuate channel 113 provided in the plate 112. When the flap 110 is caused to move from the position in which it closes the opening 13, movement of the flap 110 is only permitted until the projecting formation 114 engages an end portion 113a of the arcuate channel 113.
The flap 110 is also provided with a third support means in the form of a pad 111 of plastics material, which extends substantially along and is connected to a face of the flap 110 which faces the ramp members 22, 24 when they are in the stored position. The pad 111, which is preferably of a nylon material or the like, permits sliding movement of a part of the second ramp member 24 thereover and is able to support the second ramp member 24 during movement thereof and also in the fully extended position.
Operation of the ramp assembly 12 will now be described. In the stored position the ramp members 22, 24 of the ramp assembly 12 lie in respective planes which are substantially parallel to the plane of the frame structure 12, with the first ramp member 22 being positioned generally above the second ramp member 24 (see figures 1 and 2). The flap 110 is biased by the spring (not shown) to substantially cover the opening 13 in the frame structure 12.
The part 56, connecting the ramp member 22 to the second run 86 of the driving means 80, lies in a position near the sprocket 81a and the guide part 103 lies substantially at the midpoint of the sprockets 91a, b of the transmission means 90. The second carrier member 61, connecting the second ramp member 24 to the second run 96 of the belt 94, lies in a position substantially beneath its corresponding guide part 103.
To move the ramp members outwardly, the motor 83 drives the drive shaft 82, which rotates the sprocket 8 la in a direction so as to cause the first run of the belt 84 to move in a direction towards the interior of the vehicle (not shown), thus the second run 86 moves in an opposite direction, away from the vehicle. As the first ramp member 22 is connected to the second run 86 by the part 56, and the transmission means 90 is connected to the first ramp member 22, the first ramp member 22 and transmission means 90 both move outwardly, with the guide part 103 travailing along the elongate bar 102 towards the nut 105.
As the second ramp member 24 is connected to the second run 96 of the belt 94, the second ramp member 24 also moves outwardly, at the same rate as the first ramp member 22, without causing rotation of either of the sprockets 91a, b.
During initial outward movement of the second ramp member 24 the resiliently deformable formation 26 thereof engages the pad 111, thus effecting pivoting of the flap 110 away from the position in which it closes the opening 13. As the second ramp member 24 continues to move outwardly, a lower surface of the cover channel 98 is supported by the pad 111.
Outward movement of the first ramp member 22 and the second ramp member 24 continue, at the same rate, until the guide part 103 abuts the nut 105 at the end of the elongate bar 102. The motor 83 continues to provide drive to the sprocket 81a, thus effecting further outward movement of the first ramp member 22. However, as the guide part 103 is inhibited from further outward movement by the nut 105, the first run 95 of the belt 94 cannot continue to move outwardly. Therefore, further outward movement of the first ramp member 22 causes the sub-frame 41 also to move outwardly.
As the first run 95 of the belt 94 cannot move outwardly, further outward movement of the sub-frame 41 causes the second run 96 also to move outwardly, thus effecting further outward movement of the second ramp member 24, relative to the first ramp member 22.
The first ramp member 22 and the second ramp member 24 continue to move outwardly, with the second ramp member 24 moving outwardly at a greater rate than the first ramp member 22. Movement of the ramp members 22, 24continues until the part 56 has travelled from the sprocket 81a to a position near the sprocket 81b. In the fully extended position each guide part 103 lies in a position near the sprocket 91a.
As the part 56 nears the sprockets 81b, the co-operating formations 23! and 25 slide over each other to a position in which they lie adjacent each other to provide a continuative ramp surface, with the resiliently deformable formation 26 abutting an adjacent surface, such as a pavement surface.
Once part 56 reaches a position near sprocket 81b, the motor 83 ceases to provide drive to the sprocket 81a thus inhibiting further movement of the ramp members 22, 24 (e.g. a sensor may be provided in a region near the sprocket 81b which senses when the part 56 is near thereto and accordingly discontinues power to the motor 83). In this position the ramp members 22, 24 are in the fully extended position.
To move the ramp members 22, 24 inwardly from the fully extended position to the stored position the motor 83 drives the sprocket 81a in the opposite direction to that in which it rotated during outward movement of the ramp members 22, 24.
Rotation of the sprocket 81a causes the first run 85 of the belt 84 to I move in a direction away from the interior of the vehicle (not shown). As the first ramp member 22 is connected to the second run 86 by the part 56, and the transmission means 90 is connected to the first ramp member 22, the first ramp member 22 and transmission means 90 both move inwardly, with the guide part 103 travelling along the elongate bar 102 towards the connection part 101.
As the second ramp member 24 is connected to the second run 96 of the belt 94, the second ramp member 24 also moves inwardly, at the same rate as the first ramp member 22, without causing rotation of either of the sprockets 91a, b.
Inward movement of the ramp members 22, 24 continues, at the same rate, until the guide part 103 abuts an end face of the section of the elongate bar 102 near the connection part 101.
Further drive from the motor 83 effects further inward movement of the first ramp member 22. However, as the guide part 103 is inhibited from further inward movement by the end face of the section of the elongate bar 102 near the connection part 101, the first run 95 of the belt 94 cannot continue to move inwardly. Therefore, further inward movement of the first ramp member 22 causes the sub-frame 41 also to move inwardly. Thus the second ramp member 24 begins to slide beneath the first ramp member 22.
As the first run 95 of the belt 94 cannot move inwardly, further inward movement of the sub-frame 41 causes the second run 96 of each belt 94 also to move inwardly, thus effecting further inward movement of the second ramp member 24.
The first ramp member 22 and the second ramp member 24 continue to move inwardly, with the second ramp member 24 moving inwardly at a greater rate than the first ramp member 22. Movement of the ramp members 22, 24 continues until the part 56 has travelled from the sprocket 81b to a position near the sprocket 81a.
Once the part 56 reaches a position near the sprocket sib, the motor 83 ceases to provide drive to the sprocket 8 la thus inhibiting further movement of the ramp members 22, 24 (e.g. a sensor may be provided in a region near the sprocket 81a which senses when the part 56 is near thereto and accordingly discontinues power to the motor 83). In this position the ramp members 22, 24 are in the stored position.
Figures 7 to 12 show a second embodiment 1010 of a ramp assembly in accordance with the invention. Parts of the ramp assembly, namely a first ramp member 1022 and driving means 1080 therefor, are as above described in relation to figures 1 to 6 and thus will not be described again. Parts corresponding to parts of the ramp assembly 10 have the same reference numerals as those used in figures l to 6, with the addition of 1000. The following description will relate mainly to features of the ramp assembly 1010 which differ from the ramp assembly 10, namely the transmission means by which movement of the second ramp member 1024 is derived from the first ramp member 1022.
The transmission means 90 and the stop means 100 of the ramp assembly 10 have been replaced with a transmission means 1200. The transmission means 1200 is provided at both sides of the ramp assembly 1010 and thus only one side will be described hereinafter.
The transmission means 1200 includes two second rotary elements, in the form of toothed sprockets lO91a, b, connected to a channel section sub frame 1041 for rotational movement about respective axes and spaced from one another in a direction in which the ramp members 1022, 1024 move. The sub frame 1041 is carried by the first ramp member 1022 for guiding the second ramp member 1024 for movement relative to the first ramp member 1022. First guide means 1030 is also provided, carried by the frame structure 12, for guiding the first ramp member 1022 for movement relative to the frame structure 12.
A second flexible driving element is provided, in the form of a toothed belt 1094, entrained around the sprockets lO91a, b. The belt 1094 has a first run 1095 extending between upper portions of the sprockets lO91a, b and a second run 1096 extending between lower portions of the sprockets lO91a, b.
The second ramp member 1024 is connected to the first run 1095 by a carrier member 1061, such that movement of the belt 1094 causes the carrier member 1061 to move along the channel section of the sub-frame 1041, thus moving the second ramp member 1022 relative to the sub-frame 1041.
The sprocket lO91a is also connected to a part of the first ramp member 1022 near a transverse member (not shown) of a housing 1014, which housing 1014 accommodates the ramp assembly 1010, such that movement of the first ramp member 1022 effects movement of the sprocket lO91a and thus the transmission means 1200.
A pinion 1210 is provided between the connection part 1056 (connecting the first ramp 1022 to the second run 1086 of the driving means 1080) and the sprocket 1091a and is supported by the sub-frame 1041 for rotation about an axis generally parallel to the axes about which the sprockets 1091a, b rotate.
The pinion 1210 is coaxial and in driving relationship with the sprocket 1091a, such that rotation of the pinion 1210 causes the sprocket 1091a to rotate with it.
The pinion 1210 engages with a rack 1220, which is carried by and extends along a lower internal surface of the frame structure 1012, generally parallel to the direction in which the ramp members 1022, 1024 move.
Operation of the ramp assembly 1012 will now be described. To move the ramp members 1022, 1024 outwardly, the motor 1083 drives the drive shaft 1082, which rotates the sprocket 1081a in a direction so as to cause the first run 1085 of the belt 1084 to move in a direction towards the interior of the vehicle (not shown), thus the second run 1086 moves in an opposite direction, away from the vehicle. As the first ramp member 1022 is connected to the second run 1086 by the part 1056, and the transmission means 1200 is connected to the first ramp member 1022, the first ramp member 1022 and transmission means 1200 both move outwardly.
As the second ramp member 1024 is connected to the first run 1095 of the belt 1094, the second ramp member 1024 also moves outwardly. As the ramp members 1022, 1024 move outwardly, the pinion 1210 travels along the rack 1220. Travel of the pinion 1210 along the rack 1220 causes the sprocket 1091a to rotate, thus the belt 1094 advances along an endless path around the sprockets 1091a, b.
As the second ramp member 1024 is connected to the first run 1095 of the transmission means 1200, the second ramp member 1024 moves outwardly relative to the sub-frame 1041 and hence at a greater rate outwardly of the frame structure 1012 than the first ramp member 1022.
Movement of the ramp members 1022, 1024 continues until the part 1056 has travelled from the sprocket 1081a to a position near the sprocket 1081b and the pinion 1210 has travelled along the rack to a position near the sprocket 1081b.
As the part 1056 nears the sprockets 1081b, the co-operating formations 1023 and 1025 of the ramp member 1022, 1024, slide over each other to a position in which they lie adjacent each other to provide a continuative ramp surface, with the resiliently deformable formation 1026 abutting an adjacent surface, such as a pavement surface.
Once the part 1056 reaches a position near sprocket 1081b, the motor 1083 ceases to provide drive to the sprocket 1081a thus inhibiting further movement of the ramp members 1022, 1024. In this position the ramp members 1022, 1024 are in the fully extended position.
To move the ramp members 1022, 1024 inwardly from the fully extended position to the stored position the motor 1083 drives the sprocket 1081a in the opposite direction to that in which it rotated during outward movement of the ramp members 1022, 1024.
The sprocket 108 la causes the first run 1085 of the belt 1084 to move in a direction away from the interior of the vehicle (not shown). As the first ramp member 1022 is connected to the second run 1086 by the part 1056, and the transmission means 1200 is connected to the first ramp member 1022, the first ramp member 1022 and transmission means 1200 both move inwardly, and the pinion 1210 travels along the rack 1220 towards the interior of the frame structure 1012.
As the pinion 1210 travels along the rack 1220 it causes the sprocket 1091a to rotate. Rotation of the sprocket 109 lb causes the belt 1094 to advance along an endless path around the sprockets 1091a, b, which moves the second ramp member 1024 inwardly relative to the sub-frame 1041. Thus the ramp members 1022, 1024 continue to move inwardly with the second ramp member 1024 moving at a greater rate than the first ramp member 1022.
Movement of the ramp members 1022, 1024 continues until the part 1056 has travelled from the sprocket 1081b to a position near the sprocket 1081a, the carrier member 1061 has travelled from the sprocket 1091b to a position near the sprocket 1091a and the pinion 1210 lies in a position near the sprocket 1081a.
Once the part 1056 reaches a position near the sprocket 1081b, the motor 1083 ceases to provide drive to the sprocket 81a thus inhibiting further movement of the ramp members 1022, 1024. In this position the ramp members 22, 24 are in the stored position.
In the above description the ramp members 22, 24, 1022, 1024, frame structure 12, 1012 and housing 14, 1014 are preferably manufactured of metal although it must be understood that other materials could be utilised. Also, the belts 84, 94, 1084, 1094 could be replaced with transmission chains or the like and the sprockets 81, 91, 1081, 1091 could be replaced with pulleys or gears.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately, or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.

Claims (41)

1. A ramp assembly, including: a frame structure; a first ramp member; a second ramp member; guide means guiding the ramp members for movement relative to the frame structure between a stored position in which one of the ramp members is positioned generally above the other ramp member to a fully extended position in which the ramp members extend away from the frame structure to provide a continuative ramp surface; and means for effecting movement of the ramp members between their stored and fully extended positions, wherein at least a part of movement of the second ramp member is derived from the movement of the first member.
2. A ramp assembly according to claim 1 wherein, in at least a part of the movement of the ramp members, the second ramp member moves at a greater rate than the first ramp member.
3. A ramp assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein, in a first part of the movement of the ramp members, the first and second ramp members move at substantially the same rate and in a second part of the movement the first and second ramp members continue to move, with the second ramp member moving at a greater rate than the first ramp member.
4. A ramp assembly according to any preceding claims wherein the guide means includes a first guide means carried by the frame structure and guiding the first ramp member for its movement relative to the frame structure.
5. A ramp assembly according to any preceding claim wherein the guide means includes second guide means moveable with the first ramp member and guiding the second ramp member for its movement relative thereto.
6. A ramp assembly according to claim 4 or claim 5 wherein the ramp assembly include a first carrier means connected to the first ramp member and moveable along the first guide means.
7. A ramp assembly according to claim 6 wherein the first carrier means includes first carrier members, one provided at each side of the first ramp member.
8. A ramp assembly according to claim 5 or any claim appendant thereto wherein the ramp assembly includes a second carrier means connected to the second ramp member and moveable along the second guide means.
9. A ramp assembly according to claim 8 wherein the second carrier means includes second carrier members, one provided at each side of the second ramp member.
10. A ramp assembly according to claim 4, or any one of claims 5 to 9 as appendant to claim 4, wherein the first guide means includes respective first guide members provided one at each side of the frame structure.
11. A ramp assembly according to claim 5, or any one of claims 6 to 9 as appendant to claim 5, wherein the second guide means includes respective second guide members provided one at each side of the second ramp member.
12. A ramp assembly according to any preceding claim wherein the means for effecting movement of the ramp members include driving means for effecting movement of the first ramp member and transmission means for effecting movement of the second ramp member.
13. A ramp assembly according to claim 12 as appendant to claim 6, or any claim appendant thereto wherein the driving means effects movement of the first carrier means along the first guide means.
14. A ramp assembly according to claim 12 or claim 13 wherein the driving means includes: two first rotary elements supported in fixed relation to the frame structure for rotational movement about respective axes and spaced from one another in a direction in which the ramp members move; and a first flexible driving element entrained around the two first rotary elements and defining first and second runs thereof; wherein the first ramp member is fixed one of the runs of flexible driving element and at least one of the first rotary elements is drivable by motor means to effect rotation thereof.
15. A ramp assembly according to any one of claims 12 to 14 as appendant, directly or indirectly, to claim 9 wherein the transmission means effect movement of the second carrier means along the second guide means.
16. A ramp assembly according to any one of claim 12 to 15 wherein the transmission means includes: two second rotary elements supported in fixed relation to the first ramp member for rotational movement about respective axes and spaced from one another in a direction in which the ramp members move; a second flexible driving element entrained around the two second rotary elements and defining first and second runs thereof; and means to cause the second flexible driving element to advance along an endless path around the second rotary elements during movement of the first ramp member, the second ramp member being connected to one run of the second flexible element.
17. A ramp assembly according to claim 16 wherein the means to cause the second flexible driving element to advance along an endless path around the second rotary elements includes: a rack connected to the frame structure; and a pinion supported in fixed relation to the first ramp member for rotation about an axis and engageable with the rack, wherein the pinion is in driving relationship with one of the second rotary elements, such that movement of the pinion along the rack causes the second flexible driving element to advance along the endless path around the second rotary elements.
18. A ramp assembly according to claim 16 wherein the means to cause the second flexible driving element to advance along an endless path around the second rotary elements includes: stop means connected to the frame structure and engageable with a formation provided one run of the second flexible driving element, the second ramp member being connected to the other run of the second flexible element.
19. A ramp assembly according to any one of claims 14 to 18 as appendant, directly or indirectly, to claim 6 wherein a part of the first carrier means is connected to a run of the first flexible driving element. s
20. A ramp assembly according to any one of claims 16 to 19 wherein the two second rotary elements are supported by a sub-frame, which sub-frame is connected to the first ramp member.
21. A ramp assembly according to claim 20 wherein the sub-frame includes the second guide member.
22. A ramp assembly according to claim 20 or 21, as appendant to claim 16 or 17, wherein the pinion is connected to the sub-frame.
23. A ramp assembly according to any one of claims 18 to 21 wherein the stop means is provided on a third guide means, which third guide means guides the formation on the first run of the second flexible driving element.
24. A ramp assembly according to claim 23 wherein the third guide means is an elongate bar or tube.
25. A ramp assembly according to claim 24 wherein the formation on the first run of the second flexible driving element include an apertures through which the bar or tube passes.
26. A ramp assembly according to any one of claims 23 to 25 wherein the stop means is provided by a further formation at an end of the third guide means.
27. A ramp assembly according to claim any one of claims 14 to 26 wherein the first and second flexible driving elements are first and second continuous belts, bands or chains and the one first and one second rotary elements are pulleys, toothed sprockets or gears which engage with the first and second flexible driving elements to provide drive therebetween.
28. A ramp assembly according to claim any preceding claim wherein edge of the first ramp member remote from the frame structure, when the ramp members are in the fully extended position, and an adjacent edge of the second ramp member may be provided with co-operating formations which engage each other, in the fully extended position, to provide a continuative even ramp surface.
29. A ramp assembly according to any preceding claim wherein an edge of the second ramp member remote from the frame structure, when the ramp members are in the fully extended position, is provided with a resiliently deformable formation.
30. A ramp assembly according to any preceding claim wherein the frame structure includes an opening through which the ramp members move.
31. A ramp assembly according to claim 30 wherein the ramp assembly includes a closure member connected to the frame structure and moveable to close the opening in the frame structure through which the ramp members move.
32. A ramp assembly according to claim 31 wherein the closure member is pivotable about an axis generally transversely of the direction in which the ramp members move and is biased to a position in which it closes the opening by a spring.
33. A ramp assembly according to claim 31 or claim 32 wherein the closure member includes a third support means to support either or both of the ramp members during movement thereof.
34. A ramp assembly according to any preceding claim wherein the ramp assembly is removably accommodated in a housing, the housing being adapted for installation into a recess in a floor of a vehicle and having a cavity for receiving the ramp assembly and an upper surface which provides a floor surface of the vehicle when the frame structure is removed therefrom.
35. A ramp assembly according to claim 34 wherein the ramp assembly is removable from the housing in a direction generally parallel to the floor surface of the vehicle.
36. A housing for a removably accommodating a ramp assembly, the housing being adapted for installation into a recess in a floor of a vehicle and having a cavity for receiving the ramp assembly and an upper surface which provides a floor surface of the vehicle when the frame structure is removed therefrom.
37. A housing according to claim 36 wherein the ramp assembly is removable from the housing in a direction generally parallel to the floor surface of the vehicle.
38. A housing according to claim 31 wherein the ramp assembly is removable from the housing in a direction laterally away from the vehicle.
39. A ramp assembly substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
40. A housing substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
41. Any novel feature or novel combination of features described herein and/or in the accompanying drawings.
